Bailey, you gotta 'splain your picks to me. You have three films I think are great, masterpieces even: Memento, Shadowns, Brokeback. And then Irreversible, crap. Man Who Wasn't There, crap. Not busting balls but just curious that I'm so on page with you for 3/5 and so off page on 2/5 particularly Irreversible.
The whole list was haphazard, but the unifying idea as I was making the picks seemed to be sort of a sense of spiritual and/or emotional despair.

I liked the unrelenting nature of Irreversible. Take the opening, dizzying, camera-- It was not merely an attempt to disorient or make the viewer nauseous (although it was that, too), but as the spinning and gyrating camera washed over me I got the sense I was travelling through the twists and turns of a body. As the club was named "The Rectum" I believe this was intentional. Going in ass end first. And the story is told from back to front, so tha these hyper emotional moments are disconnected from their precedent... and we are left merely to ponder each event by itself. What it tells us is that no act of violence, whether it be physical or emotional, whether it was unprovoked or revenge, is ever truly justified. And by going backwards, we're able to get a greater sense of sadness in the quiet before all the tumult. Even something that should be joyous, that Bellucci's character is pregnant, now becomes sad. I also think the effect of the final shot of Bellucci on the grass as the camera whirls around and up, as if into the blankness of the universe, and the closing line "Time destroys all things" is incredibly powerful. It was just a completely moving experience.

And I haven't even mentioned that the film contains the spookiest moment I have ever seen in any film. During the infamous rape scene, we see a black silhouette appear in the background, pause, and then turn around and walk away. This figure is completely unnoticed by the attacker or the victim. It is a shot to the heart of the audience. Our passivity helps facilitate evil. As long as we are complicit, there is no hope for us.

The Man Who Wasn't There was partly a joke... the festival ends on a "lighter" note. Of course, that lighter note still depicts a bitter end and a spiritually empty universe. But I love all the elements, the way the Coens tie in noir, slapstick comedy, absurd theatre, Camus... to me it's all good stuff

I was entertained by it and appreciated the craft but I still just don't think it amounts to anything, like what the point is.

The director seemed to be a David Lynch fan. From the music mostly but the camera too. Is that true?
Sorry to say I really don't know anything about the guy who directed it.

The pregnancy is what bothers but I guess that's to show that a happy moment is ruined like you said. The film can't be dismissed that's for sure. I've been considering it and considering it since I watched it. It's still off for me but I appreciate that he put it on film.
