How many CDs do you own?

672 for me, but I'm only counting store-bought hard copies, not CD-Rs or downloads.
Many. I haven't counted in a while.
In college? Probably between 500-700. Today? Maybe 25.

asl?

Cyber?

We've got two towers, nearly full, that each hold 500 (so 1,000); two much smaller towers, half-full, that each hold 100, I think (maybe another 75); and four binders, various sizes, all nearly full, that hold anywhere from 200 to 400 CDs. In short, easily 2,000 hard copy CDs here. This is to say nothing of what's going on in our C drive...

But, really, who counts? And what does it prove?
I'd say real CD's about 500, count the CD-Rs (a lot of which were burned from iTunes legit purchases) it gets closer to about 750.

Wowzers, tough crowd. Just kidding.

As a tribute to Rush I own 2112. I shall never buy another CD again to remain loyal to Geddy and Friends.

About 2,500 I think. I set about doing up a formal list on Excel but more important life stuff took over. Maybe someday.

I thought it was closer to 3,000, at this point. A purging might not be the worst idea.

2,500 my ass. My herniated disk says at least 3,750.

But your vagina says no, it's actually about 2,500.

And just like that, the thread became worthwhile.

Either way, the body parts of both of you are bigger than mine at 672.

You might be right. Either way, it's fearful. Between the books and the CDs, no one will ever help us move again.

Now everyone shut up, so Jcassady and Jonathan Banks is my hero will keep talking about their vaginas.
More vaginas, asses, and blown disks. Less of the other stuff.

I'll take you word for it, considering you and my vag are virtually inseparable these days.
That's because your vag doesn't have that awful haircut.
Sorry, but I'm only allowed to have one Hitler hairstyle and it looks better down there.
Only about 250-300, but I'm still in my early 20s, and at least 60-70% of those are awesome albums that I still listen to.

Best. Thread. Ever.

Is that what you're calling it now? Hitler? That night in Tahiti it was Moe. Nyuk nyuk.

Well I am told that it gives Jews a burning sensation.

I assure you it applies to peoples of all colors and creeds. My health insurance statement proves it.

I just don't know if I'll ever get to that day when I go completely digital. I don't just collect music, I collect the CD itself, the booklet, etc. Taking a CD from the shelf, opening it and playing it is part of the whole experience for me. Sure it would make life easier on me (and Jon's vagina) when I move, but for me the collection itself, the physical stuff, is the backbone of collecting. It's going to take a lot to get me to fully convert. Even if I do, I don't think I could get rid of my old stuff.

Plus, CDs never crash.

You know, just yesterday I was listening to something I had downloaded from iTunes that did not come with a digital booklet. And I was reminded at how incomplete it feels to me when all I've got is compressed tracks to play on my iPod. Guess I'm stuck in new old-fashioned mode. Three things will have to happen to totally convert me to all-digital listening:

1) Give me an mp3 player with enough memory to hold my entire music library in CD quality. I don't care what anyone says, 128kbps isn't even close. I'm satisfied enough with 192kbps to get me through the work week. But over the weekend, I still listen to a lot of discs on my CD Walkman, laptop and car stereo.

2) Create a website where I can download ALL of the artwork - album cover, liner notes, etc. And, of course, there needs to be an electronic device capable of storing and displaying it. Does one of these already exist?

3) Release an affordable external drive with enough space to back-up all of my CD quality music.

I love my iPod for making music listening convenient. But when I purchase music, I go for CDs approximately 3/4 of the time (often a used copy from eBay or somewhere else).

Nerd alert!

I rip all my CDs to flac and I have them on my htpc for anytime I want to listen to them. I have converted copies in ogg on my mp3 player and my laptop. It's a great situation, but it took a lot of time for me to do this. And of course the extra money in having the hard drive space to do this.

I'd consider going digital for buying new stuff if the frighteningly tech-inept labels would do something so simple as allowing me the option of buying the albums as full, direct WAV rips of 3-700mb, depending on how long the album is. And the high res uncompressed source artwork that gets sent to the printers, of course. How hard can that be when all they have to pay is a couple pennies in bandwidth and credit card order processing to send it to me?

But no. They have to give it to us piece by fucking piece over the next 10 years, first with these SUPER DUPER 256kb/s itunes files with slightly higher (but still shitty) bit rates for more money. Then maybe we'll get 320kb/s itunes files for a little MORE money, then maybe 20 bucks for a FLAC, then maybe 25 bucks for WAV with all the artwork...then the special Audiophile Price of 30-40 bucks for them to actually go back to the master and give it to us at higher than CD quality. I guarantee this is exactly what will happen, at least with major label owned artists.

I hear ya. It takes for ever. What did you do with all your old discs, by the way? Record store or eBay maybe?

I feel ya, brotha. Damn their EYES!

Well, I can't run with the big dogs in here. Only have about 400 discs.

I still got em. Occasionally, I like to pull the CD and go through the lyrics and artwork.

I guess the next step is to scan all of that and put it on disk...

I'm not a techie so forgive me if this is a stupid question, but aren't mp3's by definition compressed files? How can you match the CD bit-rate with that type of file? (It may be simple, but again, I'm a tech moron in most respects)
