Best Comic Book moments? (spoilers ahoy)

Getting my latest shipment of comics got me thinking...what moments in comics from this year (or recent memory) have struck you guys/gals as just great?. Wheter its superhero, independent, alternative, Id just love to hear about it.
My picks? Hands down, Cobra Commander's return and rise to power in "G.I.Joe: America's Elite"...im still impressed by the creative team from that book coming up with such great plot twists.
Second place goes to Astonishing X-Men for making not only Cyclops a great character, but getting away with a secret plot between issues.
Finally, DC gets third place with the "Siniestro Corps" storyline in Green Lantern, which has been pretty great, despite other titles getting in the way.

So, whats your picks?

Osiris being eaten alive by Sobek in "52".

Ennis' Punisher #50. "Congratulations, Mothafucka; It's a bitch!'

The best comic book moment of 2007? DC making a good storyline with the "Sinestro Corps". I honestly feel these past two years have been DC's worst in my 15 years reading comic books. The only good DCU stuff they're putting out are the GL books, Checkmate, Brave & the Bold, Shadowpact and (obviously) All-Star Superman. Grant on Batman was good until Tony Daniels came onboard. "Worst Artist To Pair With Grant Motherfuckin' Morrison" for 800, Alex. Dini on Detective Comics was good for all of six issues, too. The other 90% of the decisions they've made (story and editorially) have been utter shit.

Anyways, back to the point: the latest issue of Astonishing X-Men with (SPOILER) the Cyclops reveal was deeelish.

Anderson's pick was pretty neat too, if only because it reminded me of Erik Larsen's notorious "left-page reveals" from his early Savage Dragon days.

Marvel's Annihilation event was a nice surprise, and A: Conquest is shaping up to be even better. Raney's at his best and the reveal of the true big baddie was geeky and genuinely intriguing. The Skrull reveal in the Earth-level MU was pretty enticing too, and it helps that I'm a sucker for stuff like that. Civil War was okay, World War Hulk was better so let's hope third time's the charm.

Great picks everyone! Ill add a few more that just hitted me:

-The reveal of the secret "big bad" in "52"....seriously, Ill never look at a butterfly in the same way ever again.
-Even more love for Annihilation; its main villain revealed was a great moment, because no one expected it, despite the title being so obvious.
-Id be lying if i dont admit I geeked out a bit over the reveal of the party in possesion of the new mutant baby in "Mesiah Complex".
-Thor vs Iron Man was a great moment as well.
-MVP getting energy discharged in "Avengers: The Initiative" was a pretty great moment.
-Catman getting his act together in "Villains United" and "Secret Six" was greatness.
-Finally, Mr. Fear's recent attack on Daredevil's life is shaping up to be a fantastic storyline.

My comic book store forgot to pick up the first four chapters of "Messiah Complex" and handed me Chapter Five today. Granted, Chapter Four was New X-Men, which I skip, but still, I'm missing 1 through 3. Even my superhero-comics hatin' friend thinks it's good so far. He only picks up X-Men books from time to time for nostalgia's sake, but mostly he sits down with indy stuff like Blankets and Joe Sacco stuff.

The Order and Iron Fist, by the way, are really good reads. A long way better than I ever expected them to be, Iron Fist especially.

Buffy and Angel comming back in comic form and kicking ass

Why are so many of these from the past 5 years? Sorry folks, but comics haven't been quite so good lately as you'd have us think.

As for me, I'm a big fan of Batman kicking Superman's ass in the climax of Dark Knight Returns. That or the final confrontation with the Joker. Or when Batman makes his first appearance. Or fuck it, the whole thing is better than most of what people put above.

For a somewhat less predictable one, I'd also go with Daredevil and Bullseye playing russian roulette while the latter's in traction.

Going by the original poster's comments. I took it as meaning the past year. I don't see where your reading the all-time statement.

Hell, if we were going all-time...why keep it to just the big two?

I still remember beginning with Iron Man comics, as far as Marvel initiation, reading the early-mid 90's storyline where he became crippled or something and War Machine had to send Tony's friends into battle in older versions of the armor against a megapowered Ultimo. As they fall in battle from their inexperience and the faulty nature of the older armor, Tony makes the finishing touches on his fancy schmanzy new suit that lets him fly.

He takes to the sky and shows up just in the nick of time to throw down with Ultimo and eventually defeat him, and he's standing there, being all, "Yep, Iron Man has saved the day again!" when War Machine walks over and SLAM! nails him right in the armored face, screaming at him for being an egotistical showboat who almost got his friends killed. Pretty much the first time I ever found comics interesting- I was a really late starter in that field.

The last few arcs of BPRD have been mind-blowing. Never saw any of that shit coming.

The ambiguity of this thread's purpose is not my fault.

Nobody said it had to be the big two. Now who's misinterpreting the thread?

A certian someone getting a sniper shot to the brain in Y The Last Man just about made me punch the comic to death. Later I realized it was just good storytelling.

Sorry if the ambiguity of the opening thread brought some conflict, but considering the ammount of new comics and events released over the last 3-2 years, I tried to give some open range for everyone to post about the moments they enjoyed...my apologies for not being more clear on that.

You are.

As long as we're saying "within the last 2-3 years," I'll cast my vote for the unmasking of Peter Parker in Civil War. Didn't see that one coming. I was talking with my friend Paul about it after that issue came out -- we've known each other since we were kids, reading comics back when they cost 75 cents -- and this was the first thing Marvel had done in years that we both agreed was an interesting development. Mostly because it promised to change the game: here's a character that has protected his secret identity for as long as we've all been reading him, and he's unmasked himself in such a way that there's no going back. Ever!

EVER!

And now this fucking One Fine Day or whatever the fuck it's called comes along. Thanks a lot, guys. For a brief moment there, I was on board. It looked like you were gonna take chances and make things interesting again. Shame on me for falling for it.

I don't even read comics, but just thought I'd clarify that, yes, Smeagol is the one doing the misinterpreting.

You're absolutely right. I read the first post then responded after reading the rest of the thread, and checked my picks against the thread title. I didn't realize in the body of his first post he specified from this year. Sorry folks.

I like Smeagol, give him a break.

The Punisher killing Microchip for betraying him was a definite shock to me. I would never have seen that coming, but with the MAX line the way it is, I guess I should have.

The moment that sucker punched me in the face was Fallen Son, when Tony Stark breaks down while talking to a dead Captain America saying, "It wasn't worth it."

Also, the final confrontation between Nite Owl, Rorshach, Doc Manhattan and Ozymandias in Watchmen. "I sent it 35 minutes ago." And, well, you know the rest. Still one of the single defining moments in comics. Sorry if it's a little before the timeframe of the thread, but it's just too damn good.
