An L.A. how-to thread

I've begun getting my ducks in a row for the big move, and I'd like to see a big catch-all thread for any helpful information on Los Angeles. I'll be making a short trip early in the new year to explore a while, and then I'll be moving for good next August, so I'd like any useful information from all the Los Angeles vets that frequent the boards. Anything would be appreciated, from great restaurants that get overlooked and affordable apartment complexes to jobs that can potentially offer a little opportunity. I'm looking for more of the former stuff for now, as I need to get my bearings, a roof over my head, and something to pay the rent before I start worrying too much about getting paid to do what I like. Right now I've got a bit of office, banking, and bartending experience, so I'll probably start of shooting for one of those. I would have just bumped Slater's thread, but I want advice past my first apartment.

To start off, I've been reading a lot of "How to move to L.A." books I picked up from Books-a-Million lately, and most have been helpful, but most are so optimistic and "SUCCESS IN ONLY ___ STEPS" about the whole thing, and I need realistic advice. From what I've read, though, I'm leaning toward Westwood. I graduated recently, so being near a campus with people my age is enticing, especially when moving to a new city on the complete opposite side of the country. I'm also reading that the Valley may be better for my wallet.

Sorry that I'm out of the loop, but why are you moving to LA? To pursue a goal of....?

As mentioned in Slater's thread, the Palms/MarVista/Culver City areas are your best bet for affordable apartments that aren't in LA's armpit, aka The Valley. There are a lot of UCLA students living in this area (I got to mock them after today's football game), and just a lot of youth in general. A good website for places to live is Westside Rentals.

As far as eateries, I know a bunch, so if you have certain cuisines that you want to try out here, post them and I'm sure I can suggest some good places to try.

There are plenty of quick & dirty jobs around here, and plenty of flexible ones because of the industries this city supports. The company I work for is always hiring kids out of college to work in our live shopping network phone bank at night.

Good luck. I've found the LA chewers to be a pretty cool bunch in general, so I'm sure you'll get plenty of good advice from at least one of us.

*Ahem* (Points to location) I slightly resent that remark . You act as if I'm in Chatsworth. Well I have you know sir, without my locale's resources and my former hometown (Van Nuys) we wouldn't have one of this country's greatest resources. Yes, I am talking about porn here.

It's alright - I don't think I've ever mentioned any Hollywood plans on the boards before. I decided to head out and give acting a shot. I pulled out of law school after my college acting coach told me she honestly believed I was talented, so I suppose I've got a decent fallback if I don't make any progress in the next decade. I wrote nonstop in college, but I honestly don't think I'm good enough to have a shot at making it as a writer. I only ever finished one play all the way through that I thought was worth a damn, but maybe I can try and make something out of it further down the line. Right now I'm happiest when I get to act.

Acting huh? Do you want to live somewhere where you can make 'contacts'?

If so, I'd say Los Feliz/Hollywood. Hollywood sucks. Los Feliz is pretty cool, bad parking.

You know you're looking at a minimum of about 12-1300 for a 1 br apt right? I'd say in Los Feliz it might be a little pricier than that.

imo, to move here, 4-6 thousand dollars saved is a good amount. There are lots of shit jobs you can start with, but in general, lots of jobs in general in LA. Bartending is good. You can always be a PA too.

Bartending gets you cash (which many 'forget' to report on their taxes). It also has a nice schedule to leave you free for daytime auditions and acting classes.

PA gets more connections, and is more steady.

I'll see what I can find out from those moderately successful actor/whatevers I know.

Yeah, I've been planning on bartending. I've already got experience (I payed for a lot of college by bartending), and I think once I get my first week of vacation off from work, I'm going to spend it in Birmingham taking a bar course and get certified, just to improve my chances at landing a job, and hopefully get better pay.

By the time I move, I'll have a minimum of $10,000 saved, so it's good to know that 4-6 grand is a good number to have going out there. I thought it should be more. The only reason I'm waiting until August is because I've got a decent paying job here in a town where it's almost obscenely cheap to live, so it's not difficult at all to save up like that in a year.

As far as apartments go, I know how expensive it's going to be. As much as I'd love to out there and have a place I can afford, I'm still nervous enough about it that I'm working pretty hard on convincing my best friend to go out there with me. Most importantly, I'd like to have my buddy out there with me, but it would definitely cut the living cost a bit.

That's ok, it'll be chalked up to overall excitement coming over to our lovely city. Here goes nothing.

as a long time LA chewer, but now DC denizen welcome to the jungle Tim.

If you want to do acting, the best homebase would be burbank/glendale/los feliz. Don't, i repeat DON'T live in hollywood. all the studio bullshit happens more around burbank, culver city, and universal city than hollywood.

Los Feliz is very trendy and has a ton of great job opportunities as far as bar shit.

Burbank is far more affordable yet still in the thick of things industry wise.

I attempted to pursue a life in movies in college at UCLA. You are going to the right place. There are a ton of opportunities to get involved with independent features and a lot of PA'ing jobs. Getting a good rep as a PA would be my suggestion, you are around the industry pretty much 24/7 even though you are a coffee bitch for a lot longer than you would like to be.

Good luck man.

This confuses me. Is East LA between Koreatown and Downtown LA? Because that's what I've been led to believe, even though that would put it west of Downtown Los Angeles. Also, because it ain't really that bad at all.

Koreatown is just west of downtown. East LA is, well, east of downtown.

If you're looking to act...don't be a PA. Shit hours, shit pay, and you're not going to be interacting/meeting anyone who can really help you with your career goals.

I was a PA, and I met directors, writers and actors who were all willing to have me involved in their projects as a writer or artist. These guys weren't amateurs either.
