Sherri Shepherd Doesn't Get That Whole BC Thing, Insists "Jesus Came First"

For whatever reason, the ladies on "The View" were discussing ancient Greek philosopher Epicurus this morning. Naturally, talk soon migrated to the topic of religion, and Sherri "I don't know if the world is flat" Shepherd came out to play. More specifically, to spew ignorance and a complete lack of understanding of basic world history! Discussing whether Christians were around during Epicurus' time (Epicurus lived from 341-270 B.C.), Sherri chimed in, "[The Greeks] had Christians 'cause they threw them to the lions."

When Whoopi tried to cautiously navigate her through the timeline of basic world events, saying, "I think this might predate that," Sherri responded, "I don't think anything predated Christians." Joy's attempt to explain the Greek-Roman-Christian chronology was futile, as Sherri insisted, "Jesus came first before them." Sherri's argument was all the more powerful due to her convincing "use your finger to write on the table" trick, but she can't fight the facts. Perhaps if Barbara were on today she would have explained THAT WHOLE B.C. THING (you know, as in, Before Christ).

I get sad when I think about how people as crushingly ignorant as Sherri Shepherd can do so well for themselves, it destroys my faith in a meritocratic world. It's hard to argue that education is important when people like her make it to the top of their profession.
They only way for this to make any sense is if she thinks anyone mentioned in the bible count as Christians. Congratulations Jews your years of persecution are finally over, enjoy the pork and saviour.

"Jesus Came First"

That's what she said.

This is the level of discourse her idiocy demands.
It takes a real dedication to ignorance to misunderstand your own belief system. Even so, I can't fully hate her, because she's actually funny on 30 Rock.
I guess she thinks the bible was written out of sequence, Tarantino style. Maybe that explains why Jesus has that scar in the Old Testament.

THAT'S THE SAME WOMAN!?!

Fuck, now 30 Rock's just a little bit tainted.
As someone with far more wit than I once observed: "Some Christians deserve to be thrown to the lions."
Guys, obviously she was making a profound statement that Jesus, being God Himself, both the son and the father, was there at the beginning of time. And that before Jesus (meaning God), there was nothing because God (meaning Jesus) created the Heaven and the Earth. She was being DEEP, MAN! Like God and Jesus can be the SAAAAME PERSON!

Pass that bong this way, duuuuuuude.
Maybe she was trying to be, y'know, funny. At least I HOPE it was some kind of joke ... otherwise that is scary!
I love how Whoopi and the loud-one are trying to cover for her ... "on paper they came first". heh.

That's what I was thinking:

"Sherri just insulted her savior's sexual prowess? Wow, those Christians really are messed up about matters related to nooky. You don't see that in any other religions. 'Our prophet could totally out-fuck your prophet!' versus 'yeah, uh, our prophet can't control his spooje.' Night and day, I guess. Night and day."

::sigh::

What else can one really say about this? Makes me feel like I'm squandering my time working my way up the ranks, learning all manner of subjects and the like.
She kept repeating it thinking that if it's said a few dozen times, it becomes fact.
Why not? Works for Dobson.

This is how I feel everytime I watch MTV Cribs.

The "throwing Christians to the lions" comments would suggest that that wasn't what she was talking about.

And then there's this...

I find I almost have the opposite view; she'd have to get a job doing something, and I'd much rather she be on television, where her ignorance is made plain to a large nationwide audience, than carefully keeping it hidden and managing to scam her way into a position where she could do some real damage, like determining whether people like you or I can get a job or a driver's license or a necessary loan.

Jesus is timeless. Like Asian people.
It's absurd to ask that a woman who professes to be a devout Christian on a national platform know about the Old Testament?
Yet devout Christians follow the archaic rules that were described in the Old Testament.

Well, she is on The View.

There is only one way I can respond to this story:

I'm all for respecting the beliefs of others and all that, but anyone who claims to shape their entire life around the teachings of a particular person yet is so monumentally ignorant about the basics of their history deserves nothing but derision.
I think you goofed on the "Omnipotent Yellow Flesh of Christ."
Why talk about things?! or make comments!

And FWIW, I don't think any of us took her literally the first time she said it. It was the second, third and fourth time she said it as the others tried to clarify what they thought she so clearly did not mean.
Well, she off-hand and thoughtlessly reiterated it several times.

As for the "why do you care" question, you've created two problems for yourself:
1) Why do we care about any entertainment? Is hearing the opinion of real people chosen because they're interesting (to a certain demographic) somehow less important than the travails of fictional characters? We've got hundreds of posts on Transformers, but being offended by the almost certainly willful ignorance of this woman is a waste of our time?
2) If it's beneath our time to care about this, your role as the police of what we're supposed to care about becomes infinitely more useless.
Uh, why wouldn't you take her comments literally? She said Greeks were throwing Christians to the lions, which pretty much rules out any lofty spiritual metaphor.

To what meager extent I care, it's because there are many, many more intelligent and deserving people who have to struggle to have their thoughts heard while this idiot gets a national platform to trumpet her ignorance.
Moreover, its indicative of our culture of loud ignorance substituting for reasoned discourse. I'm not even saying that this is some sort of step back from how things were in the past, but we should ridicule people like this. That teaches them to have their facts straight when they open their mouth.

But isn't the point of shows like this that the idiots at home can identify with TV personalities who are equally clueless?

Fuck if I know, but fuck em anyway if so.

I care only insofar as this incident serves as fodder for comedy.

Anyone who would stands in front of millions of people and spouts that kind of nonsense absolutely deserves ridicule.

Which is the real answer, anyways. It's as funny as if you were teaching me about meteorology and I tried to refute you with my theory of thunder being created by angels bowling.

I think I'm done replying to this guy. He's incredibly presumptive and frankly, too obnoxious.

As far as such discussions goes (people getting seriously involved in earnest discussions of children's properties), well- that's stupid too. I don't understand your argument, and wonder if you do.

2. Ah, but I didn't say it was merely beneath you to care about this- I said it was ungenerous- that is to say, mean- that is to say, harmful. To whom? To those who are not dumb like this woman is dumb- one of the great faults of the secular left these days is the nastiness, and I think a thread like this is evidence of that.
I'm going to actually respond to you, for the sake of discussion:

I'm not really sure exactly what you're saying here (you seem to be saying the word "discussions" a lot), but we aren't commenting as part of her demographic. We aren't even commenting as the "secular left" or that she somehow represents Christian people. She simply represents stupid (or if you want, woefully misinformed) people. But her saying so forcefully that "nothing predates jesus" is both a statement of fact and also a statement of belief, and the fact that she seems to have such a strong passionate zeal about a completely wrong tenet of her belief system is deserving of some commentary, at least in the way where it's pretty entertaining even if a bit mean spirited. Go read some other threads and thicken up your sensitive skin if you want to post around here. This is CHUD.

And if you want to make such a big deal about us "not being her demographic," the people who our comments would ever be harmful to (if only because they lack a sense of humor) wouldn't be this board's demographic, so what the fuck should they/you care?

edited for clarity.

It's quite possible to debate the logic of religion, but someone usually ends up being called either rude or ignorant.

How exactly are we supposed to treat the opinion of a woman who doesn't believe the first 50,000 years of human history happened? To give respect to that idea is to imply it is worthy of being held, and it is about as unwelcome a thought in the 21st century as I can think of.

Eh, just one last post to point out your hypocrisy. I can't resist.

Let's not go there, seriously. It's not important to the debate. We're not debating the merits of her belief system. She's absolutely free to believe it, and it doesn't speak to her merit as a person. The problem is a mixture of her willful ignorance and outspoken nature. That should be obnoxious to any thinking individual on principle.

Nope, we're social animals, it doesn't work like that. She's in a position to influence the behaviour of lots of other people, and the fact that she is allowed to remain in a seat of influence and authority after displaying her lack of awareness legitimizes ignorance.

If we were leopards, I could see your point.

You seem to think I'm criticizing you for paying attention to the woman merely- I'm criticizing you for paying attention to the woman just to say something nasty and unconstructive. If the woman had not, through her being an ignorant Christian, given you the opportunity to be mean, you would never have paid attention to her or her appearance on this awful tv show.
Ok, you're changing your points as soon as they're refuted. This would be a concern if there was a debate here. Instead, you're trolling. The best part is how poor a job you're doing.

You can't seriously be arguing that we're being mean to HER for saying she's stupid, and then saying that the people she'd influence are too stupid to matter?!

But I totally agree with you that we're assholes. No denying that.

Who says we would hate them? Your unique combination of ad hominem attack and baseless presumption is impressive, but a really lousy debate strategy. I do like the fact that you assume that there are people too stupid to matter. Glad you're not one of us assholes.
