I had to go Francais, and another genre will wait until the bonus round top piss people off so I submit as my final pick:

36 Quai Des Orfevre (2005)

A cracking, old fashioned procedural with two of the finest actors working in world cinema today: Gerard Depardieu and Daniel Auteuil. And nice, for a French movie, not to be beholden to casting Jean Reno for once. Though it does have the chick from Hot Shots to compensate. If I'm not selling you on it with that uber-fact, then consider that the superbly hard-boiiled story and sweepingly moody photography simply make it one of the best pure genre films to come out of Europe since, dare I say Diva. Certainly since La Femme Nikita. Though I feel this is better than anything Besson has done, save Leon.
