I risk putting my audience to sleep with these two quiet films. But that's what I love about them, their wonderful joyful silence.

Man on the Train (2003)
The Station Agent (2003)

One of the reasons I like movies that do things a little differently stems from my all too brief time reading and learning about different styles of theatre. My idea for a double feature was to do one that works not only as an appreciation of original cinema, but can also trace its roots back to the many ways theatre pushed the envelope first.

Dogville (2003) and Gerry (2002)

I'm picking three because I can. This is my Girlz Rule! triple-feature:

À ma soeur! (2001) - Catherine Breillat is one of my favorite directors. When I saw this film in the theater it was awesome to see people squirm in their seats by how well Breillant captured the awkward and alienating 'tween years when girls first become aware of their sexuality. And wouldn't be a Breillet film if it wasn't surrounded by controversy.

Secretary (2002) - It has its flaws, but the Gyllenhall and Spader overcome them to give us some of the best performances of the decade. I also think this movie is important in opening people's minds about what consitutes a "healthy" relationship. Despite it's taboo subject matter, the film is at its core a romantic comedy and many people could identify with that.

Volver (2006) - Pedro Almodóvar's best work was done in the 1990's. And while Talk to Her and Bad Education are good, Volver is a return to form -focusing on mothers and daughters. This story is funny and moving and just a delight to watch each time I view it. I can't believe I didn't pick it earlier.
