Silent Hill 5: Vagtastic Voyage - Page 2

I thought the Pyramid Head's were ye olde executioners? Didn't they have pictures of them in the museum in Silent Hill 2.

I thought that everything that James saw was only in his eyes and no one else saw what he saw. That's why that little girl was playing in that fucked up hospital and that's why she didn't understand what James meant when he told her about the "monsters" running around.

So fucking agreed on the soundtrack. Was just listening to a random playlist of some 2700 songs but when Room of Angel from SH4 came up I had to drop everything and listen to SH2's Promise, Theme of Laura, and of course.. The Silent Hill Song.

Will be picking this up first day, despite concerns about how authentically SH the game is gonna feel. For survival horror for the rest of the year it looks like it's this, and Dead Space. Both will have my money.

The latest OXM has the first review. The gist of it is that it's got the same flaws as its predecessors, except it looks and sounds good.

That said, apparently the second half of the game kicks all sorts of ass.

The review did say she did not like the new combat system, locked doors and the slow pacing of the first half; Personally, Silent Hill 2's slow pacing in the beginning is one of the things I loved about that game, so I am taking this review with a grain of salt

That's promising. I was playing Silent Hill 1 last night and I realized all I want is more Silent Hill.
If the game has a bizarre alternate ending involving aliens I'm sold.

More and more I'm realizing this is where I'm at as well.

I actually feel the same way....and, I loved roaming...there was something very creepy about the ability to walk around the town, not always knowing where to go.....Origins got back to that a bit, but not to the same level....

Homecoming looks pretty stunning, graphically....if the story is there, this should be a great addition to this series
post #61 of 112
Unfortunately for me, when I play Silent Hill 1 on my PS3, a high pitch sound starts wailing whenever I fire my pistol at an enemy.

More of the same works for me as well. I'm really looking forward to it. Oddly enough, I enjoy the gameplay and atmosphere well enough, but the key ingredient for me is the Akira Yamaoka soundtrack. I don't care who makes the game, as long as they're trying, but the day Silent Hill comes without Akira Yamaoka is the day I begin to get suspicious... I just wish this new one had a soundtrack included pre-order deal or something like that.

I actually enjoyed Orirgins quite a bit, and have played through it more than once, which is rare for me. I'm just a sucker for Silent Hill. Even the friggin movie...

Pyramid Head keychain at one store with purchase! Heh. I think it was Circuit City? Maybe Best Buy.

Indeed. Including the soundtrack with Silent Hill 3 spoiled the hell out of us

It is Circut city; Gamestop is giving away a full screen version of the movie with their preorder (ugh)!

Sh3 came with the soundtrack and SH4 had a mini version of that one which was a preorder freebie....makes me wish for more of the same with this one!

This game will be in stores Wed-thurs of next week!!!
Wait it comes out next week? Meaning I need to pick up Mercenaries 2 and Silent Hill next week after I get paid..

And I agree with the Silent Hill love.. What did Origins come out for? PSP?
PSP and then PS2 a few months later
Silent hill homecoming is out 10/1!
Part of my brain wants to wait and pick this up when it's a bit cheaper but another part of my brain says: Who am I kidding? I'll probably get this as soon as possible this week and I'm really looking forward to it.
I keep waiting for more reviews for this... but I don't know what for. I'll be getting it anyway.

I found a review on 1up.com. they gave it a "B": Homecoming stays true to the macabre Silent Hill atmosphere without feeling stagnant.

Sounds good to me.
I just played through Alone In The Dark and enjoyed the hell out of it. Im really looking forward to getting my hands on Silent Hill now. Im assuming its basically the same thing right? Were the Silent Hill games ever big on puzzles?
It's basically the same thing, only it doesn't suck.
Is there any reviews aside from 1up?
IGN's review is up. 6.7. Theirs confirms one of my worries about the game after hearing the storyline, in that a former soldier can handle the monsters of Silent Hill too well, thus taking away some of the tension.

Is it sad that I'm still kind of undeterred from picking it up Thursday?
IGN is often way the fuck all over the place with their reviews. I take 1ups 80 over IGN's 6.7 any day.
Oh, yeah, they're often shit with these things, but that particular complaint is one that bugs me about a lot of horror movies/stories. I'm prone to believe the game takes a hit on account of it.
The review also claims other reasons as to why it's not scary... I don't care if the quality is crap, but I'm getting the Origins vibe all over again... A boring wolf in sheeps clothing...
So Suck=Awesome??

Really, i dont understand the hate with Alone. Yeah controls sucked, but once you got the hang of it their were great puzzles and was just really inventive over all.
I picked up a copy of the game for the PS3 on my lunch break... Might be home a bit late tonight (and tomorrow, AND I'll be away for the weekend) so who knows when I'll actually get around to playing it. Hopefully we'll have some chewer impressions up on here soon enough though.

As we head into the end of the year and a lot of the great year end games start pouring out I'll have to be very discerning about which ones I actually pick up (trying to limit my gaming budget, but it can be oh so hard!). Silent Hill is a no brainer for me though, so we'll see how it goes. I wonder how long it'll be before I can track down the soundtrack somewhere or other since it didn't come with it.
Looking forward to hearing what Justin has to say about it. Eh, at least there's still Dead Space.
I'll be picking it up Thursday or Friday. I'll certainly bring back the good word.
You can't invert the Y-axis controls in this game. This is almost kind of a deal breaker for me.
I'll probably pick this up tonight, I'll post my first impressions for you guys.

Um, that actually is a dealbreaker for me. It would be frustrating to the point of nonentertainment. Thanks for letting us know.
Inverted aim option that does nothing? Humm.

You guys should stop playing backwards! It's not Flight Sim 6: Homecoming! .. haha.

Just got to my house in-game but am enjoying it so far. Nothing really remarkable has happened but I'm digging the filter over the otherworld stuff, heavily film-scratched looking but not enough to make visibility an issue. The flashlight is good for nothing. Combat seems pretty easy so far, taking out 3 nurses at the same time, but I'm hearing from a friend that it gets much tougher by the mid-way point of the game. Guess we'll find out.

I do miss cinematics that arent all in-game engine though (haven't been around since what, SH2? but the engine still isn't that impressive for next gen)

No, I'm sure the inverted aim option works fine, but it doesn't affect the third person controls. I've gotten over it after my initial slack-jawed disbelief (seriously, how does any game made these days not include this as an option?), though it's still pretty ridiculous. Luckily you don't even have to look up or down that much in this game.

I'm in the middle of the cemetery at the moment. The combat isn't anywhere near as frustrating as I've seen some reviews indicate, but I'm not sure how much I'm digging the experience so far. It's the first Silent Hill I've played, and I have a feeling it'll take me a while to really get into it. I assume these games are mostly about the story and atmosphere anyhow, so I'll have to see how it pans out -- still, isn't it entirely odd that Alex doesn't seem to be particularly bothered that everything has clearly gone to hell in his hometown? It seems like it would have been easier to explain away in previous entries since the protagonists were all new to town (right?).

Scratch that. These smog guys kick the shit out of me if I don't use a pistol and I just got raped in an elevator and wasted two health drinks.

The hotel is suitable creepy so far. Something about that lady humming in the room with the scary hole in the door...

Okay, fuck fucking nurses. I've had to fucking replay a part of this stupid fucking hotel 3 times now because after 15 minutes with no save point or check point, going through 3 floors of a pain in the ass hotel to pick up postcards and getting my map legend erased after every death, I get bumrushed by 3 nurses who are just too goddamn fast to deal with and raped severely. Side dodging doesn't even work for these ruthless bitches (yet I can destroy groups of those big spider things without taking a hit this way)

ETA: Apparently the mighty army man who was too combat efficient for a silent hill game can only survive the wrath of 3 NURSES by turning off all his gear and sneaking past like a little bitch.

Just took out the Sepulcher boss, but am getting destroyed by the packs of the next set of enemies you encounter. Will give it another go tomorrow night or something.
The camera thing bugged the hell out of me for the 5 minutes or so I tinkered with the game last night. Spent more time trying to figure out if I was exiting the option menu correctly than I did wandering around. I hope this is something they decide to go back and patch in some way. Seems simple enough. I'll get used to it I'm sure, but I don't want to HAVE to. Oh well.

The whole hospital opening made me think of Jacob's Ladder... again. Really wish I had more time to play.

edited for some spelling.
To me, the hospital opening felt more Hostel than anything. Have only had about an hour of play and so far I'm not hating it.

From what I've seen, Homecoming is to the classic Team Silent stuff as Neil Marshall's last film was to John Carpenter's Escape from New York... no real identity of its own, but faithful enough that I don't really mind so much.
This is the anti Origins. They both try so hard to be Silent Hill Games that they have no identity, but all the little things Origins did wrong, Homecoming does right. I like it enough to want to keep playing.
Is it scary? I haven't read any of the hidden text for fear of spoilers.
Kinda? I'm not sure yet. The only "scare" I've seen was so telegraphed it was impossible to scare me. If you want it scary, late at night, alone, lights off for maximum effect.
Was starting to get really frustrated with this and the combat system (and the fact that aside from smogs and nurses its just about impossible to avoid fighting every monster you encounter).. but thankfully ever since [ running into the doctor ] the game had gradually slowed from a hack and slasher to, *gasp* a puzzle oriented survival horror game.

Am enjoying myself a lot more now, just hit [ the docks of Silent Hill ]. Some enemies are still beating the shit out of me and I've barely got a health drink to save my soul.. but I'm still chugging forward through this sucker
post #95 of 112
Just beat this.

Thankfully, the difficulty peaked around the [ Police Station ] so my time getting raped was short lived. I didn't read up on all the endings yet because I've been strategizing my save points around where I can probably alter it easily enough, but in the one I got (massive massive huge spoiler don't wipe text if you care) I was turned into a fucking Pyramid Head! !!!!

So cool.

Overall, I enjoyed this one. The story ended up feeling like a solid Solid Hill entry to me (I mean, this trumps shit like The Room), but the gameplay at least up to the halfway mark feels.. off. Maybe it's just too combat heavy to what I'm used to, what with the dodging and combos and shit. After all my earlier bitching, I went into the last fight with 9 health drinks, 12 first aid kids and 4 serums.. so maybe I was just being WAY too stingy with that shit. But they did seem to overcompensate the healing items in the last quarter after all the really hard fighting was over and done with, which makes no sense but okay. It's been so many years since I've played the original, but I'd probably but Homecoming right behind #2, or in a weird tie for 2nd spot with the original right now as far as ranking the series.

Definitely worth the rental for fans of the Silent Hills.
Dude... Why you gotta be talking shit about The Room?
Only got to play about a half hour last night, but aside from the Y-axis thing (attention Konami: Follow Tecmo's example. PATCH THIS SHIT.) looks, sounds, and feels like Silent Hill to me, just with a few small Resident Evil 4 flourishes.

Also, 30 seconds into the game's attract sequence, I NEEDED the soundtrack for this. The song's awesome.

Hey all...

As for the IGN Homecoming score, do not forget they did back in the day, they did not score Silent Hill 2 well at all...said it 'did nothing to better the genre' or thereabouts so their opinion means 'jack squat' to me.

People on SH boards are saying this is about a 14 hour game to beat on inital playthrough, making it the longest Silent Hill game to date....

I am a third of the way through it or less (at the Hotel for the first time) and am on Hard mode...Play on hard mode if you want to hate life only - it is HARD.

The first level is really an intro level to me - while it is very atmospheric, the creatures in later levels are much tougher than what you experience in this first one....

The creature design is cool and the game has decent AI - two creatures will attack you using a flanking pattern. Nurses are hard to beat, but if you learn their 'secret' they are easier, so there is an attempt at making the player use strategy.

Graphically, the game looks very nice with the occasionally crappy texture or lip synch issue. Monster models look fantastic; Alex looks great while the supporting cast is more hit and miss....

Exploration can be pretty darn tough. In the second level (Shephard's Glen) it started off as a small level then grew.....whoa, but I am having fun....I have played all Silent Hill games and like them all - some more than others...some less (SH 4 I am looking at you!!!)

Dialogue Branch: ala Mass Effect is kinda cool, but in the earlier stages, it is basic - you get two or three options only, but as this is a first for the Silent Hill series, I welcome the addition

This is a fun game, worthy of the series, IMO!

Glad to see some Silent Hill love on these boards again!

I thought I was going through the levels pretty meticulously (except the last few sections that I was just burning through trying to beat the game before going to bed), but still missed at least one photo, drawing, and weapon.. so if you are a collection-whore this will give you a pretty solid playtime as compared with other games in the series. I wasn't really "keeping score" but I think my overall playtime was around 12-13 hours, give or take with the parts where I kept getting killed and restarting 15 min back in the level and whatnot.

Also, it is a Silent Hill game, so there is replay value for the extra endings. Lots of parts in this where you get dialoge options that I'd assume greatly alter the outcome, and they are spread all throughout the game along with choices you have to make, so worth its weight for people who care about such things.

Domingo - I loved all the 1st person stuff in the actual room, but outside of that, the game pretty much is a piece of shit. Having to replay every level in the game backwards while babysitting a crippled NPC with the worst AI imaginable was not my idea of a pleasant gaming experience.
