BNAT Stories

(cross-posted from the Alamo Drafthouse thread)

Oh, do I have some stories from BNAT this year...

First, the party at the Texas Chili Parlor. First off, I heard through the grapevine that Harry had called and requested to close out the place Friday night for BNAT people, and they agreed. Then, last Wednesday, they called Harry and told him they couldn't close as it was a Friday night. Harry tried to tell them that the BNAT people would be more than enough business but they refused to close. Now, about 100+ people were descending on this little restaurant that maybe seats 75. Still, people would have hung out outside until their seats were ready, and it would have been fine... if the place was closed. Because it wasn't, people began pouring out the door.

The waitstaff was very stressed at this point, and began telling people "GET THE FUCK OUT OF MY WAY!" kicking people's shins, and demanding people leave tables if they weren't eating. My friend Megan tipped $5 on a $40 check, which is more than 12%, if my math is right. After she paid, we stood outside, talking to other AICN crew and BNAT people, and that's when the waitress comes out and yells at her, "Hey, thanks for the $5!" and not in a pleasant manner. That's when her husband Joe (one of my best friends) goes off on her and the manager, saying, "We're never eating here again, and you should have been cut out of QT's movie which was too long anyway." He didn't say it exactly like that, a few "fucks" were thrown in there for good measure.

Okay, come BNAT morning, and we park downtown. On the weekends, downtown parking is free, and we park about a half-block away from a police station and next to a homeless shelter. We make our way into BNAT, and for the most part BNAT's a blast this year. We all got free HD-DVD players from Toshiba, and I fully can't wait to hook up that bad boy.

The Ritz is a beautiful theatre. I love the huge screen, the seats are terrific, and it's just wonderful. Tim League is amazing, especially dressed as a wizard making confetti fly through the Alamo.

THE POUGHKEEPSIE TAPES. Drew (Moriarty) introduces this "documentary" and states that there will be a Q & A afterwards with the filmmakers. The story is about a serial killer who recorded his murders on video and the events that surround the tapes. This movie was shit-terrible. The audience had an active hostile reaction to it. Outside, Eli Roth is shaking his head, and saying, "You know they're gonna blame me for this." The audience reaction was so bad that the Q & A was canceled. They said that they had to leave for a flight, and the word around the campfire is that MGM didn't want them to do a Q & A because they want to keep the illusion that it's a real documentary. It's not, folks. I don't feel too badly for the filmmakers because I had to sit through this horrible thing and I actively started rooting against their careers when they brought in the Girl Scouts. When the film ended, Tim League came out, waited a beat, and said, "Well, let's move on!" Everyone laughed at that.

During the night, we kept checking on the cars because we wanted to make sure they were okay. Well, 6 AM was the last time we were able to get time to check. Once BNAT ended, we got our free HD-DVD players and waited for my friend Joe to bring the car around. Turns out the windshield was smashed completely in, by who we had no idea. The windshield repairman later told us about 10 people had their car windows smashed. Quint had his GPS system in his car stolen. Other LA people had their laptops grabbed. There has got to be something done about the parking down there. Maybe next year for BNAT we can all shuttle in.

To end it all, here's me on Rock Band, rocking out to "Maps" at Massawyrm's house! (Singing) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CkIH1YSzl2o

I want to go to a BNAT so fucking bad, it's been a dream of mine since I started reading the site.

5 dollars is a terrible tip on 40 dollars. 12% is not a good tip. You should have tipped 8 dollars.

All depends on the service I guess, but yeah, it's not the standard minimum.

Would you have tipped more if the waitress had kicked you in the shins and told you to "Get the fuck up" while we still had food on our plates and drinks? Because that's exactly what she did. She's lucky she got $5.
Yeah, that's even worse than a diner waitress who, when putting our plates down at the table, accidentally dumped the entire contents of one plate into my buddy's lap. She looked down at it, said "Oh," and walked away like nothing happened. The place wasn't even busy, even my friend who it happened to thought it was the funniest thing ever.
I don't think any restaurant owners are sweating people who don't tip well and then say they're never coming back.

Here it´s usually a standard amount of money depending on the services and quality of the restaurant.

For example, at a bar $2 or $5 is the most i´ve tipped. At a nice restaurant with maybe a $150 check, 15$ to 20$ is what´s common. But even if you just leave $10 you won´t get any attitude from the waiters.
It's different here in the states. I start at 20% and work my way up or down from there. It takes some really bad waiting to get me to tip less than 18%.

No shit she wanted you to leave the table if you weren't eating. She needed some real customers who understand the concept of tipping.

I wish the Texas Chili Parlor had a message board. I bet their musings about the BNAT crowd would be a great read.

Bingo. I imagine the crowd was treating the place like someone's living room, where they could just hang out. That waitress is making well below minimum wage and her rent gets paid when lots of people come in, sit down, eat and leave good tips. The problem wasn't the waitstaff, who was dealing with an untenable number of people, it was with the event organizers who didn't find somewhere else to go - and who shouldn't have told 125 people to go somewhere that seats 75.
A restaurant that is pretty much an Austin institution refuses to close on a Friday night for about 100 people? For shame!
Oh, and Joe (who by the way I really like) saying that the TCP scene should have been cut out of Death Proof in not only retarded, but childish.

Well, that wasn't in the original post. And I have a hard time imagining a waitress walking around kicking her customers in the shin! But that's just me. Also, I tip more than 12%.
You'd have to be really awful to me to get less than 20%. You'd have to visibly spit in my food and intimate that I have sex with my mother to get less than 10%. If the service is bad, I prefer to show it by never going to that place again.
Is every BNAT this poorly planned? Because every time I read posts on it, that's the way it seems. You would think that they've been doing it long enough to run smoother than this.

And yeah, I can empathize with the waitstaff dealing with a bunch of non paying lounge abouts. Not that they have the right to be nasty to people who are paying to eat and/or drink, but I can understand the frustration of dealing with the large amount of people that were surely there just to "hang out".

I usually tip at least 10% even if the service is the absolute worst. 20% is the beginning standard.
Well, I'd qualify being slow, forgetful, and inconsiderate being pretty awful, unless there's huge mitigating circumstances. We were at a sports bar the night of the Green Bay/Dallas game, and with the chaos going on in there, I wasn't going to hold a few slow order arrivals or the fact that she didn't spend a lot of time with us against her, especially because we saw her working her ass off at her other tables. Now, if we're talking a Wednesday afternoon in mid-June and we're waiting twenty minutes for someone to even come to our table, then that's a problem.

People weren't exactly just hanging out. Every table was filled with people ordering dinner, and those that weren't were ordering drinks from the bar. Those of us done eating or not drinking stood outside.

I agree that it could have been planned better, but it's not like the place was filled with freeloaders.

I stand by the $5 tip. The way she treated us, she's lucky to get anything at all. Hell, I threw in $2 for my $8 meal and I think that's more than fair.

And yes, she was kicking shins. I know because my shin was one of them that was kicked.
The bottom line of the service industry is that no matter how frustrated or pissed off you are, the customer never sees it. Your problems are not their problems. Now, I did see a fellow call center employee hang up on a guy on 9/11 when the guy said, "I don't give a damn about your employees, is my money safe?" (the company we worked for was headquartered in the WTC), and even his supervisor thought that was justified. But in this case, be pissed at your manager or ownership, don't take it out on the customers.
Short of a flat-out threatening situation or a harassment issue, there is no real reason to compromise service due to guest attitude. Kicking customers and/or complaining about their habit of sitting down and letting food settle after enjoying a meal shows a real disdain for the people that keep the business running, which is the opposite of a healthy perspective in the service industry.

Customers are annoying. Wow, really?
I had a friend argue that even bad service should be tipped since that's the only way they make money. I replied that by that logic, we should pay to see bad movies since that's the only way they make money.

No BNAT funk this year. I didn't notice any, and I changed clothes twice. The plumbing is great at the Ritz, by the way. The toilets have the force of jet engines.

I've been tipped $5 on a check over $100 (2 hour birthday party with over a dozen kids). THAT stung.

Not that I can think of, really. Eli Roth was much more mellow this year, and nice to talk to. And rumor has it that QT's buying the New Beverly, maybe.
What is the standard tip for a shin-kicking waitress? 20%?

15 bucks on a $150 meal is damn cheap, though.

As far as BNAT is concerned... I'm curious to know which films dropped out. Speed Racer? Pineapple Express?
Worst boast post ever, but hey, you know, typical for this time of year.
I like this thread -- especially how Devin came out of his self-imposed exile and didn't even post about movies. Hello, irony!

But, yeah, I read the lineup and there were some solid films, but it didn't seem as strong this year as in years past. And I'm amazed Rambo wasn't included, given Harry's relationship with Stallone.

Wasn't intended as a boast. Just some anecdotes.

I really wish Devin were there to see FAREWELL UNCLE TOM, though.

I hope all of the message boards where Nordling posted this are having the opposite reaction.

"Fuck yeah, bro! You showed her!"

That is a bit of a stunner. I believe it has been essentially "complete" for a while now.

Oh and I tip twice the sales tax at restaurants (more if deserved). 20% for haircuts though.

I say this with the prelude that you're a nice guy and I've never really clashed with you before, but you really do become insufferable around BNAT with all the bragging/trying to show how cool you are. Sometimes I wish you'd make like Dave Coulier and cut it out.

Also, 5 bucks is a fucking lousy tip.

I didn't realize the Midwest forum was an entirely different messageboard. But hey, take home a complimentary home game.
And I'm with Phil on the tipping issue. I'm generally a very generous tipper, particularly at places I go to frequently. But if a server ever kicks me on purpose, uh, yeah, he or she isn't getting much.
Don't sweat it, Nordling. Rath made similar comments about me when I kept talking about seeing Joey Lawrence at the Cheesecake Factory in Atlanta. A pre-Dancing with the Stars Joey, by the way.

Tips aren't a given, they're earned. I would've given a penny and a note suggesting career paths that are more in line with her personality, like professional wrestling.

...and I start at 20%.

I guess in the end I can sweat being called a lousy tipper. It's not like any of you people are going to serve me food in the future. I hope.

Well, a lot of them aren't out of college yet, give it time.
I'm disappointed to hear about the bad service at the Chili Parlor, since that's one of my favorite restaurants, but I can't say this is going to affect my business there. I feel for you guys, Nordling, but that place is too tasty.

About Tarantino buying the New Beverly, does he really need something else to distract him from making movies? Though maybe I'm just being selfish, because I wouldn't want that to make his QT fests in Austin less frequent.

I like that the internet, because nowhere else in the world would you have complete strangers arguing over whether or not one of them tipped well enough. It's not like you're ever sitting at a restaurant, and you look over at another table's check and then you're like, "Hey, fuck you buddy!"

That said, I do hope you tipped slightly better at the Drafthouse, Nordling. They're sweethearts.

Absolutely. I love those people. My tab ended up to be about $35 and they got $15.

It depends on the bill. If I'm at a sports bar for hours, I often tip closer to 100% (I don't drink alcohol, so this equates out to $1/drink for the waters instead of $1/beer). Usually it's 25% unless the service is poor - not "bad" just inattentive for no reason - then it's 15%. If the server actually does bad things, then maybe one penny, a note to the server, and a chat with the manager. (And if there's a bartender or expediter involved, tipping them in lieu of the server.)

Kickin the shins = not paying the bill. And if the manager swore at me and didn't comp the bill, I'd call the cops and have the waitress arrested for assault and battery, and if there's a law against it in the area, the manager for swearing.
