Awful '90s Comic Art

The Rob Liefeld re-imagines The Bible thread got me through hours of boredom at work. Does anyone have any other examples of terrible art from the Image era?

Perhaps something like this:

Yeah, it doesn't have to be Image, but it usually is.
it's tough because as soon as you say "awful '90s comic art" the only thing I can think about is Rob Liefeld.

I can almost hear LaFontaine saying: "In a world where everyone's ankles could snap in half at any time...."

The Liefeld rip off guys he hired to draw his shit were even worse. Here's a few more:

It's like Image required at least one character to be screaming at all times.

The 90s era of comics also known as the era of extremly huge tits on female characters.

Why is everyone on that cover yawning?

I just want someone to explain the "boob shelves" to me.

I read it in a Wizard long ago, and I still use it with to geek out with:
"Ugh... I feel like Rob Liefeld draws."
I think some guy said it in a line for convention food. I'm also very glad I don't have those comics anymore. Badrock.

I've got #1s of Bloodstorm and Bonestrike and Deadkill, but I'm missing Bloodkill, Deadbone, Stormbreak, Killstorm, Bloodbone, and Bloodblood.

Uh, just what's wrong with that Batman and the Outsiders cover? Besides being from 1983, that's Jim Aparo, who's 1000 times the artist Liefeld dreams he is.

I did to. I'm starting to think that part of the appeal was that I could draw just as well when I was 12, honestly, though I was more easily fooled by MacFarlane's crap than Leifeld's.

Regarding the Batman cover-- silly concepts are a category separate from bad art.

But sometimes they converge:

Very very true. That Marat Micheals(sp?) guy is worse than Liefeld. His shit was almost like Liefeld's art went straight to print without being inked. Which can also be said for Liefeld, but hey.

I really enjoyed Mark Texeira's work when he was inking the 90's Ghost Rider comic, but then he took over and it was a sloppy fucking mess. The only thing that guy could draw well was a kick-ass skull.

And honestly, what 12 year old boy with a pencil hasn't perfected a kick-ass skull. It's like, the first thing you learn to draw when you discover metal music.

I love how lost the guy in the middle looks.

And that Wolverine is farting smoke.

And that Worf and Riker share an arm.

Well, yeah dude - Liefeld's art is like the graphic portion of an EXXTREEEEMEEEE! Mountain Dew commercial. Or something.

My favorite from that:

Michael Turner Can't Draw

The guy seems to be incredibly charming and nice, and he's a cancer survivor (he's missing one of his hips), but... he can't draw 98% of the time.

And Worf's razor-sharp tri-phallus.

Blasphemy, sir. BLASPHEMY. Tex is cool. Slightly less cool when Palmiotti or someone inks his pencils into Genericland, but man, I always enjoy his style.

I must have bought every chromium, foil, holographic, or embossed comic that existed. I feel so very ashamed.

I don't know, the proportions in that Power Girl drawing don't seem as out of whack as the writer tries to claim they are.

Eh, I've always kind of liked Mike Turner's stuff, from Fathom to those Civil War covers and whatnot. It's not high-art, but something about his style, lack of feet and the occasional huge-chest nonwithstanding, works for me. Not that he's my favourite or anything though.

Too true, but sometimes the 'clean' look works well for what he's doing.

The most important thing you need to know before reading about all the terrible things Rob Liefeld has drawn is that he has never seen or talked to a woman in his life and has no idea what they look like or how their bodies operate. If you asked Rob Liefeld to draw a diagram of the uterus he'd put on a pair of gauntlets and punch the shit out of your chalkboard. This is how the man operates, and though I know it sounds like a lot, you have to believe me. I don't want you looking at the stuff he's drawing and think he's a conscious adult male with a creative job who can and has influenced the minds of young artists. The man is a pair of blue jeans with a face. He has on a backwards cap, and when he turns it around, it's still backwards.
Cracks me up

Not only was that a real comic. It was a freakin novel!

I never realized how untalented some of the artists are. I mean, I figured out how to draw feet and proportions in high school art class.

At least they all figured out how to draw ripped delts and huge tits.
Not really art related, just plain stupid.

I remember having a Ghostbusters colorforms set I played with for hours. This comic was just plain comical. But I had to have it!
I had some vinyl clings once. It took months for the medicine to finally kick in, but I'm "cling free" nowadays.

Aww! Now I want that.

Also, re: Mike Turner, his Aspen was actually really cool. I gotta admit to really enjoying that one. His vistas are beautiful, at least as far as my memory allows me to recall them.

Did any of those "EXCITING FIRST ISSUE" crap ever have an exciting 3rd issue? Or fourth?

I don't want to be accused to being a comic book elitist, but it seems like other creators, before the 90's, were actually trying to tell a good story. Liefield and the rest of the hacks at Image just wanted to sell a bunch of merchandise. It's why I stopped reading comics during the 90s.

That being said, I went back and looked at all the 80's Claremont x-men a while back. Hoo-boy, does that man suck.

They had about 25 or more. It was sad.
Sad
Sad
Sad

More here.

Another thing of note: what's with everyone's signature? They drew little scrolls and crap. It's almost like they spent more time on their signatures then the rest of the drawing.

Does anyone have that GIF where they view the infamous Liefield Captain America cover from above to show how distorted his anatomy is? I love that thing...
I've got a ton of this crap too. I think I'm gonna take all my old issues of brigade and make a quilt out of em. Save my t-shirts.
I wonder if anyone ever asked him why he doesn't draw proportional humans. And never really draws good feet and ankles.

Not to mention horrendous costumes accented with gee-gaws and doo-dads and scalloped sleeves and epaulettes and helmets with pointy shit. Eeh. My stomach is now sick.

I'd love to see Liefeld's reimagining of Maus.

What gets me is how the whole industry went gaga over this kangaroo-shit. Leifield could never, ever draw and yet, somehow people ate this crap up. This why I stopped buying comics in the 90s.
