Duran Duran

Are there any Duran Duran fans out there? I listen to all kinds of stuff... good stuff, utter crap, but overall a pretty decent spectrum, but I've always had a bit of a soft spot for Duran Duran, stemming most likely from them being one of the first bands that registered with me when I was younger. I had a casette tape of their album Seven and the Ragged Tiger (the one with The Reflex) when I was little (until it met with a Soda Spill of Doom) and I'm still a fan of the band to this day. I also had a tapeof Van Halen's 1984 that really hit the spot back then, but this is about Duran Duran.

They've been around fro a long time now and they've had their ups and downs but overall I'm not too ashamed to say I'm still a fan. The recent Red Carpet Massacre album insn't too bad, and Astronaut before it was pretty damn good.

Anybody else, or am I shooting myself in the foot?

I enjoy Duran Duran quite a bit actually. It wasn't a bad I really kept track of when they were huge. I was young, and I listened to a lot of INXS in those days. Ordinary World is one of my favorite songs, even if it doesn't fit in Layer Cake at all.

My wife is way into them. Her favorite band of all time. So I have heard the new stuff, which she loves. I'm not a huge fan of the current stuff, but I don't mind the early songs. My wife just saw them two nights ago. She was in the front row right in front of John Taylor the whole time. She said she was dancing and singing, and John Taylor would look at her and smile. She was almost crying when she told me this. I'm happy for her, honestly. I don't think there is a band or just about anything out there that would make me react that way. I don't know if I should be sad or not.

Child of the '80s here, so yeah, I can get an enjoyable nostalgia vibe when "Rio" comes on. But I've always thought they are best as a sampler platter of individual bits that other bands do better. At times DD flirted with really rocking it, or clever songwriting, or going all-out sexy but they've never really committed to any of the above.

Like The Cult, only DD sold better because they always stayed closer to pop.
