Comic Book Character Draft: Discussion Thread

Thread Starter
When: Thursday, December 13th - Friday, December 21st

How it'll all go down:

Each day, everyone follows the order I'll post in the Round Thread as it goes up. Each draft will contain a pick for a hero and a villain.

All genres, companies, eras and styles are welcome.

For example, if you were going to draft Iceman and The White Queen, you'd give us a breakdown on who that person is.

EX.

Iceman
Real Name: Robert "Bobby" Drake
Debut Comic: The X-Men #1 (September, 1963)

The White Queen
Real Name: Emma Frost
Debut Comic: Uncanny X-Men #129 (January, 1980)

For those cats with Photoshop skills or other talents, you can get all fancy pants with your draft picks.

The discussion thread is to explain why you chose who you did and for people to bring the trash talk.

A third thread will be opened for you guys to list your teams of selected heroes and villains.

Each draft round will feature a drafter picking 1 hero, 1 villain. I used the White Queen as an example of the shaky area. Specify what era you're culling from and I'll make the call on it. When in doubt, PM me first.

Define "American or British comics". I've my eye on some characters that have been reprinted in America but have origins elsewhere.

English language only in original print.

Mainly, it's for group familiarity. But, if you can make the case for it in a PM, I'll decide.

EvilTwin brought up an interesting point, that I completely glossed over while trying to make this accessible yet varied.

I don't want to be really obscure, but I'd make the case that any character that originated in Heavy Metal, Lone Wolf and Cub (heck, they even had a cameo in Samurai Jack), Akira, TinTin, and probably a dozen anime imports that I'm forgetting aren't obscure.
He's right and I'll allow it. I just don't want to see crap like Captain Vishnu and his Eight Arms To Hold You.

so call me a n00b, or greenhorn or whatever. I have never done a draft or anything before, do we EACH pick a hero and villain per day or does just one person get to pick each day? Any specific rules and etiquette would be greatly appreciated.

Each person will pick a hero and a villain during their turn a day.
thanks for clarifying

Not a problem. I thought I made it clear in the original thread and up top. But, it's better to get the questions out of the way now.

Exactly.

Hell, you could pick Archie Andrews and Baron Zemo.
I won't be available for a couple of days during this period- I am bowing out. Please remove my name from the draft order. I hope I didn't fuck anything up- more Maxx for everyone else!
I would like to susbtitute in for KABONG if possible.

It's not really that daunting. Kabong being out takes us back to the 16 people that splits properly into 4 groups. So, everything works out.

I figured you would, Number 16.

I'd be all over this draft were it not for the fact that a guy at my work had a heart attack recently, and I got roped into doing -his- job until January, effectively taking away my computer access from about 9:30am to anywhere from 3 to 5pm.. Mountain Standard.

Guess there's always next year.

Don't worry, there's no way to mess this up for anybody. You just think up a list of the ones you want, and when it's your turn, you pick the best option. In the great scheme of things, whatever you pick doesn't mean anything, other than perhaps building some rep for yourself with your choices.

As I see it, there are two rules of drafting:

Rule 1 is simple: Pick what you want, and enjoy your list, and have fun with the anticipation of getting your next pick, and seeing what others choose

Rule 2 is tricky: Pick what you think others will respect, as there will be plenty of smack talk. Just be open to criticism, and remember that it's all in fun.

EDIT: I can do it earlier in the day, though. But it's up to you Anderson.

What time works for you, I'll swap around.

Consider yourself swapped.

You're 10-Noon bracket now.
Thread Starter
Not a problem.

I'm taking to take into account everyone's time zone, based on when they hit up the site a lot.

That way, there's frequent movement and no long stalls to wait on people.
I don't mind swapping my earlier time to accommodate Eric C. Is there any chance I could instead be swapped to the noon-2 spot, just because my lunch is 1-2 and at 2pm my computer access is restricted. It is not impossible for me to do it later, so if it is a problem, do not worry about it. I am sure I speak for everyone when I say thanks for all your hard work and organization, Anderson.
What are the bounds for obscurity, e.g., could I pick the Awfully Dry Muffin from a Spiderman Hostess cup cake ad in the back of a comic?
I'll be out most of the morning/early afternoon, so it's quite o.k. to swap me later in the day. I've got my first rounders lined up and I'm fairly confident I'll get them anyways.
Do we go by order within the time slots or can anyone in a slot go once the time comes?
It's first come/ first served within groups once the time turns over or the earlier groups have completed their picks.
I figured Batman, Superman, and Spider-Man would go top 3. Obvious, but deservedly so, choices. Almost funner to go later, although I'd have been all over Batman, than sooner.

Ozymandias is a sharp choice this early though.
Had I gotten in first, I still would have gone with Spidey and Doom. I grew up reading Spidey in the 70s, and I was always able to better relate to him than Superman or Batman (who I flirted with slotting #1). Between the wise-cracking and the vulnerability, he always appealed to me more.

As for Doom, Dickson would be a fool to deny to power of Doom. Dickson would never dare to imply that Dickson did not believe Doom was the greatest villain of all time. For the price would be Dickson's soul!

Anyone have issues with me swapping my 2-4 spot for evil twin's 12-2 spot since he isn't available? That way I can do my stuff on my lunchbreak. (right now I am using a fedex computer nobody realizes has no internet filters)

Go at Noon-2, Exar.

The first two days will be working out what works best for everyone. Also, is anyone else having a hell of a time accessing the boards today?

Thanks anderson! Yeah, I too have been having trouble.

Not that my first few picks are any different, mind you, I'm just wondering.

It's all up to personal taste. That'll dictate how the draft as a whole will skew. Sorry, if it's taking me awhile to get back to you. The site is dragging ass for me.

Deadpool

Everybody loves "The Merc with A Mouth". Violence and humor are a winning combination for me, and I have always loved his self-awareness as a comic book character.

Taskmaster

While lately he has been a bit more of an anti-hero, it always boils down to Taskmaster's allegiance being wherever the money is. Plus, Photgraphic Reflexes is one of the coolest abilities ever.

Once your bracket comes up, you can go at anytime between those two hours.

If anyone has time issues, list them in here. I'll be working out the schedule for tomorrow and beyond.

Once the site problems get sorted out, I'll put up a reference thread for what's been picked so far.

Do you all want a "Your Characters" thread or would you be cool without it?

Once a bracket is done, the next bracket goes.

The site seems to picking up a little speed, so hopefully this will go better.

Thanks. Yorick Brown is easily my favorite comic character of the last 5 years. Expect to see another Vertigo character or two pop up tomorrow.
Nightwing
Real Name: Richard John "Dick" Grayson
First Appearance: Detective Comics #38 (as Robin), Tales of the New Teen Titans #44 (as Nightwing)

Bullseye
Real Name: Lester (last name unrevealed)
First Appearance: Daredevil #131

****

1) Dixon and McDaniel's ongoing is one of the series that got me WAY into comics, plus he's one of the cooler DCU characters (and the only true heir to Batman's mantle). Plus, Batman was taken. *glares at Eric*

2) When done right, he's one of the more interesting (albeit sadistic) villains in the MU roster. Plus, "never misses" is a cool power to have.

Really solid picks so far. I'm glad not to have seen Wolverine pop up yet.

Why I picked mine.

H1: Yorrick Brown - BKV made his name in comics by introducing a self-contained story about a wannabe magician who can't find his way in the world. When a killer virus levels society by eliminating 99.9% of men on the planet, Yorrick has to step up. Playing on conceptions of masculinity and the Battle of the Sexes, Brown steps up as a new kind of hero in the four color world. The hapless slacker who discovers that he can change the world without using webbing or gamma radiation.

V1: The Kingpin - Tony Soprano doesn't have shit on Fisk. A self-made man in every sense of the word, Fisk has known nothing but misery in his life. Whether it be his shitty childhood, his son trying to murder him or the loss of his only love Vanessa...Fisk has turned his bitterness into a crushing Criminal Empire.

If you still want in, we have special guest room. I'll allow in three more people to make an even 20.

Get drafting and we'll give you a proper time slot tomorrow.

Anderson, GREAT pick on Yorrick, I too have a serious BkvONER.

BTSMGL, Bullseye was also a wise choice, I had him on my shortlist as well.

I am seriously enjoying this.
I remember picking Nightwing in the last comic character draft because Batman was gone and I wanted the next best thing. I was trying to draft a cohesive superhero team and wanted a leader.

Love both of Rob Hughes' picks this round.

Hey Sun. Etrigan kind of walks the line.

Why do you consider him to be a villain?
HULK SMASH all your puny superheroes.

Gotta start with common characters. I just wish my first villian wasn't tainted by a piss-poor movie translation. Or, depending on your taste, my hero, as well.
I'm sorry, real work is getting out of control here, I may not be able to participate after all. IT WAS SUPPOSE TO BE A SLOW WEEK!!!

You can go later in the day if that helps out, no one's binding ye to these timely confines.

That goes for anyone. Let me know in here, if a time doesn't work for you.
