Solomon Kane

searched but did not find any postings on this movie. never heard of the character before today but I liked this poster that I found while poking around another site.

from what I understand he's some kind of puritanical demon slayer, created by Robert E. Howard of Conan fame. obviously shades of the recent Van Helsing movie, but I also like the strong Captain Kronos- Vampire Hunter vibe I get. the film will star James Purefoy and will be directed by Michael Bassett (just saw his previous film Wilderness, a good strong UK based backwoods survival slasher flick that really refreshed the parts that Wrong Turn 2 couldn't reach), so that's two plusses from me already...

question: has anyone read the original pulp novels, and are they worth hunting down if you're not much of a Conan fan?

I never read the original pulps, only because I've never seen them anywhere. I read a Marvel Limited Series that I liked a lot, and some comic stories printed in early issues of "Savage Sword of Conan" as a back up feature. I loved the character, and would definitely read the pulps if I could find them. Good hunting.
Edited to add: BTW, I hadn't heard anything about this film, but am really psyched to hear of it. I'd love to see this.

Here ya go.

“He was . . . a strange blending of Puritan and Cavalier, with a touch of the ancient philosopher, and more than a touch of the pagan. . . . A hunger in his soul drove him on and on, an urge to right all wrongs, protect all weaker things. . . . Wayward and restless as the wind, he was consistent in only one respect—he was true to his ideals of justice and right. Such was Solomon Kane.”

Collected in this volume, lavishly illustrated by award-winning artist Gary Gianni, are all of the stories and poems that make up the thrilling saga of the dour and deadly Puritan, Solomon Kane. Together they constitute a sprawling epic of weird fantasy adventure that stretches from sixteenth-century England to remote African jungles where no white man has set foot. Here are shudder-inducing tales of vengeful ghosts and bloodthirsty demons, of dark sorceries wielded by evil men and women, all opposed by a grim avenger armed with a fanatic’s faith and a warrior’s savage heart.

They re-released most of Howard's stuff by now I think. How did I not know about this flick?

Music to my f**kin' ears. Especially if the revitalized Hammer refuses to deliver the goods.

Submit this as news 1st?

yes, didn't send this for news because it's not a new announcement... just wanted to learn a little more about the character.

King Osric fans note: the ever dependable Max Von Sydow is in this film too.

What a coincidence. Just yesterday I finished reading a collection of all the Solomon Kane stories Howard wrote. He's one of my favorite fantasy characters. My question is, are they gonna make him as completely insane as he was in the stories or are they going to water him down a little?

Was the collection you mention readily available, or something one would have to hunt down on e-bay? I'd really like to read those.

Readily available. I got mine at Barnes & Noble a few months ago.

No problems with my copy. Perhaps they used a bad batch of glue while binding a particular printing?

Where I saw it. Border's too. All those newish Conan/Kull collections as well. Plus, there's a couple links to amazon in this thread.
