Yeah..... this really isn't good is it? It works on a geek level, like some have said, when you're seeing it on the big screen and the audience energy is high. Outside of that though there isn't a lot that clicks with this film.
It feels a bit Troma-esque, and while I can love Troma films for what they are I expected more from Bruce Campbell. This could have been a fun romp, but the movie goes for the cheap, juvenile laugh so often it becomes almost embarrassing to watch.
Maybe it's my liberal weeny side coming out, but I was a bit taken aback by the jokes made at the expense of gays and asians (a Brokeback reference, really?). I was starting to think the movie was trying to compete with Sarah Palin on how many social groups it could offend.
I know this is all supposed to be tongue in cheek, and not everything can have the heart and sentiment of Bubba Ho-tep, but this could have been much better.
It's not all negative through. Like Alex states in his review; Bruce, as always, is having fun and has a great presence. He also has some great one liners. Grace Thorsen is both cute and capable, and Ted Raimi's inclusion in the movie is validated in one scene as a stereotypical Italian painter.
The Q&A afterward was pretty standard stuff. I have to hand it to Mr. Campbell for being able to answer the same questions over and over again but in such a self aware, humorous way that it's worth watching him talk. He really was a class act and the guy is a good actor, I just wish that he would work on more viable pursuits. The funny thing there is, he doesn't seem interested in doing that. He's aware of what he does, who his fans are and he loves them. You have to admire that.
