Burnout Paradise - Page 5

This is one of those games that I can still go back to and play in short bursts. It's aged remarkably well compared to other launch titles from this generation.

But yeah, it is kinda broken on a fundamental level. It doesn't lend itself to particularly long play sessions.

Speak for yourself. I've had several long play sessions in Paradise City. I find it to be a fun playground to mess around in.

Okay so the free DLC adds the ability to instantly retry a race you failed... what else does it add that actually improves the game itself?

In addition to bug fixing, the several free DLC packs (now all combined into one big download) added the ability to restart races, a day/night cycle and weather system (AKA fog), motorcycles, better color coding on superjumps and billboards(making them easier to see when speeding about), extra online freeburn modes (like Marked Man and Road Rage), more online co-op and competitive challenges, and custom soundtracks and trophy support for the PS3.

The paid DLC stuff is also worth a look. This includes several car packs, Cops vs Robbers mode (kind of like one flag CTF in cars), and the Big Surf Island add-on area.

Everything Criterion made DLC-wise for Burnout Paradise, free and paid both, improved upon an already fun game. The fact that Criterion supported their game for two full years after release is pretty damned awesome if you ask me. If they didn't eventually have to move on to other projects, they'd probably still be tinkering with it.

The stuff marking the jumps and billboards easier to spot sounds good I suppose, especially in the case of the jumps, and bikes sound neat(do they actually have people on them?). Weather and day/night are nice too, but none of these things really "fix" the game in my opinion. Not that they were meant to, and I applaud Criterion for supporting the hell out of this one, I think this game just isn't for me.

Which is sad, because 2-4 were like crack for me. I could play for hours and hours constantly unlocking stuff and never get bored, and go back for higher medals(also gone now). Even the first one was a thrilling change of pace when it came out.

Like most of us, I'm willing to bet there's two words that sum up why the game can never be enjoyed the way it should be enjoyed: "Crash" and "Mode"

Has there ever been any inkling of plans by Criterion to add DLC for a Classic Crash Mode or anything like that?
I'm sure at some point they tried, but my guess is that it would have just been far too tricky/impossible to implement. Showtime Mode is no substitute.

I guess I'm one of the few who just doesn't give a fuck about Crash Mode. Yeah, it's fun, but I've always much preferred the racing in Burnout. Sure, I've barely used Showtime, I even forgot it was there when playing the PS3 version, but I'd probably use Crash just as much. I mean, I don't do ANY of the stunt stuff in Paradise until I'm getting that last license and have to.

As a single-player thing, Crash Mode was no better or worse than the other modes, but in multiplayer it's gold. Passing around the controller especially. It's just one of those modes I could get anyone to play and they'd have a blast with it, gamer and non-gamer alike. They kind of fucked up with Revenge and the start meter, but ever since 2 it was a game everyone in the room could enjoy.

LATE PASS: I finally installed my Steam copy of this earlier this week. FUN. The impetus to try it was the cheapass 360 controller I bought for PC gaming on Monday. Works perfectly with this game.

Does anyone else actually have the PC version? I realize that's unlikely.
