Year's almost over, and sure, Todd, Wilson, Atonement, and Blood haven't come out yet, but I thought we could get this started anyway.

Here's mine:

1. ZODIAC (David Fincher)
2. GONE BABY GONE (Ben Affleck)
3. ONCE (John Carney)
4. KNOCKED UP (Judd Apatow)
5. AMERICAN GANGSTER (Ridley Scott)
6. THE ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES BY THE COWARD ROBERT FORD (Andrew Dominick)
7. INTO THE WILD (Sean Penn)

9. HOT FUZZ (Edgar Wright)
10. SUPERBAD (Greg Mottola)

Honorable Mentions: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Ratatoullie, Eastern Promises, Ocean's 13, Bourne Ultimatum, and Lars and the Real Girl

Biggest Surprises: Lars and the Real Girl, Gone Baby Gone, King of Kong, Alpha Dog

Performance of the Year: Three-way tie between Pitt in Jesse James, Gosling in Lars, and Hirsh in Into The Wild

Breakout of the Year: Tie-between Casey Affleck and Ben Foster.

Still need to see: I'm Not There, No Country for Old Men, Transformers, Margot at the Wedding, the Joe Strummer and Pete Seeger documentaries, I Am Legend, We Own The Knight, Before the Devil Knows You're Dead, Beowulf, Waitress, Diving Bell and the Butterfly, 300, Black Snake Moan, Bug, Rescue Dawn, Grindhouse, Mighty Heart, La Vie En Rose, Spider-Man 3, Zoo, Lives of Others, Southland Tales, and Redacted.

1. Die Hard 4
2. Spider-Man 3

Only one was seen at a theatre. I am a dedicated movie fan.
This is tentative, of course, but...

1. The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
2. The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
3. Zodiac
4. No Country for Old Men
5. Ratatouille
6. I'm Not There
7. Once
8. Into the Wild
9. In the Valley of Elah
10. The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters

My favorite performances: Casey Affleck in JESSE JAMES, Ryan Gosling in LARS AND THE REAL GIRL, Julie Christie in AWAY FROM HER, Hal Holbrook, Catherine Keener and Emile Hirsch in INTO THE WILD, Irrfan Khan in THE NAMESAKE, and Tommy Lee Jones in IN THE VALLEY OF ELAH.

I still need to see Margot at the Wedding, Atonement, There Will Be Blood, The Great Debaters, Persepolis, Redacted, and basically most anything that hasn't made it to reasonably wide release.

9. Knocked Up
10. TRANSFORMERS

Waiting for 2008: Into The Wild, There Will be Blood, The King of Kong, 3:10 to Yuma, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford

Hated: The Kite Runner, In The Valley of Elah (Fuck you, Paul Haggis)

1. Children of Men
2. Ratatouille
3. The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
4. No Country for Old Men
5. Into the Wild
6. Gone Baby Gone
7. Bourne Ultimatum
8. Black Snake Moan
9. American Gangster
10. The Kingdom

The top 5 are really all separated by mere decimal points, and could really be in any order. I have to say I'm pretty happy to say that out of all the films on that list, Black Snake Moan is the only one I didn't see in the theater, and I can't remember why I didn't. Oh well. The Kingdom is one movie that probably isn't going to show up on a lot of lists here, but I really liked the film, despite bad Piven.

I have to say that if it weren't for reviews from the guys on the main page, I wouldn't have seen (or even heard of) most of the films on that list. It was another great year of reviews from you guys, and let me say it's highly appreciated - this was definitely a great year, and it's not over yet!
Haven't seen a lot of movies yet, but I loved Knocked Up, Superbad, American Gangster, Jesse James, Ratatouille, Enchanted (am I the only one loving this movie here on CHUD? Weird) and The Bourne Ultimatum.

Have to see Once, I'm Not There and some more movies, can't wait for There Will Be Blood but that'll be here in 2008.
Once
No Country
Zodiac
Hot Fuzz
Into the Wild
Jesse James
Knocked Up
American Gangster
Superbad
Gone Baby Gone
The Mist
The Bourne Ultimatum

What I Missed But Am Still Hunting Down: Darjeeling Ltd., Juno, I'm Not There, Sweeney Todd, There Will Be Blood, Lars and the Real Girl.

I might put Lives of Others up since it's on a lot of other lists and I enjoyed it a lot, but wasn't it last year?
Top 10 favourites.

The Host
Hot Fuzz
Ghost in the Shell: Solid State Society
The Bourne Ultimatum
No Country For Old Men
The Kingdom
Grindhouse
Gone Baby Gone
The Mist
Apocalypto
Top favs:

'Blade Runner: The Final Cut' (yeah, I know...it's 1982)
'Eastern Promises' (my fav of the year so far)
'Death Proof'
'American Gangster'
'Bourne Ultimatum' (best of the 3)
'Ratatouille'
'Ocean's 13'
'The Mist' (best, riskiest ending)

Honorable Mention to 'Harry Potter 5'

I'm really behind in my movies, so I still need to see 'Jesse James', 'Gone Baby Gone', 'Zodiac' (amongst others). I'll see 'Juno' once it leaves the stupid Uptown theater and gets a wider release around here.
Death Sentence
Eastern Promises
Grindhouse
No Country for Old Men
Ratatouille
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford

Were great. If I had to pick one best of the year, it'd be Jesse James. What an amazing movie.
One unexpected one due to the rigours of international release dates:

1) The Bourne Ultimatum
2) Zodiac
3) Not Here To Be Loved
4) Knocked Up
5) The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford [insert "hilarious" long title gag here]
6) Apocalypto
7) Exiled
8) Eastern Promises
9) This Is England
10) Sunshine

Not release here yet: Sweeny Todd, There Will Be Blood, No Country..., Lust/Caution etc etc etc...

In no order whatsoever:
-Transformers
-Lives of others
-Ratatouille
-The Host
-Knocked Up
-Shoot em Up
-Hot Fuzz
-300

Theres still a lot to see, thanks to my country's fucked up movie release dates.
That's a great list Andre, I love how you've separated them like that; it sums it up pretty well.

Sadly, I don't think I'll get to see There Will Be Blood until next year. Before you all tell me off, I'll gladly drive across half a state to see it but it looks like they're doing NY/LA for the first week and then slowly roll it out. I did read somewhere they might open wide Jan. 8 which is exciting news, but I'm not holding my breath no matter how excited I am.

I'll throw up a link to Rolling Stone's list courtesy of everyone's favorite critic, Peter Travers, just to get a rise out of you. And yes, Atonement's high - surprise!
1. Once
1. No Country for Old Men
1. Into the Wild

4. Zodiac
4. Hot Fuzz

6. Grindhouse
7. Gone, Baby, Gone
8. American Gangster
9. Knocked Up
10. Bourne Ultimatum

Haven't seen Atonement, Jesse James, There Will Be Blood, Sweeney Todd, and I think the last three might knock a few off of this here list.
1. I'm Not There
2. No Country For Old Men
3. Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford
4. Into The Wild
5. Gone Baby Gone
6. Before The Devil Knows You're Dead
7. Grindhouse
8. Zodiac
9. Knocked Up
10. Superbad

Performance of the year: Cate Blanchette - I'm Not There. Not just a mimicry but an entire physicality antithetical to the character portrayed. Every bit as demure and frail in stature as it is bold and antagonistic in attitude. The contrast of a female to play a male probably mirrors the contrast of public Dylan vs. actual Dylan. She owns that flick and it is beginning to piss me off all this talk of a supporting Oscar. She carried the load and dominates the screen. It should be a lead performance nomination leaving the door open for...

#2 Amy Ryan in Gone Baby Gone to take the supporting Oscar. I have never seen a character on screen that I so loathed yet wanted to fuck til she's cross-eyed.

Runners Up: Bardem, Affleck, Hirsch, Tommy Lee Jones.

Haven't seen: Darjeeling Ltd., Margot At The Wedding, Persepolis, Juno, Eastern Promises, Control, The Diving Bell And The Butterfly, There Will Be Blood, Once.

Don't Want To See: Most everything else.

Biggest Disappointment: Not making time to see the 1968 Soviet production of War And Peace at The Seattle International Film Festival Theatre.

Best Tits: Marisa Tomei - Before The Devil Knows You're Dead.

Best Sunglasses: I'm Not There
Seconded. I forgot about the early stuff this year too, like Black Book and The Host. Not sure they're top 10 listworthy, but I think I'll put Sweeney and those two as honorables for my entry.

I so wanted to see Devin's Fuck You Out Of 10 review on the Halloween 2007 DVD cover.
Quite a few films I should have seen this year and haven't yet, so this list is a little sparser than I'd like.

1. INLAND EMPIRE
2. Hot Fuzz
3. Away From Her
4. Stardust
5. Ratatouille
6. Beowulf
7. Science of Sleep
8. Death Proof

I saw plenty of other films, but wouldn't call them worth listing

Really should have damn seen/will still see: Assassination of Jesse James, Zodiac, Into the Wild, Once, Earth, Eastern Promises, The Lives of Others, This is England

Waiting for Uk release: No Country for Old Men, The Mist, Sweeny Todd, The Orphanage

Seeing in the next week or two: I'm not there

I don't want to be the asshole who reposts constantly, but now that I think about it, INTO THE WILD was great, and moved me at the time, but I don't have any burning desire to see it again, now, like I do the rest of the flicks on my top 10. I'm definitely going to pick it up on DVD though, just for the performances.

Anyway, as it stands, I would probably switch out Into the Wild with Superbad, and put in Charlie Wilson's War at 10. But that's me.

Either that or a quote from Nick.

Malcolm McDowell's performance is apartheid inducing. His Dr. Loomis is so weak that Donald Pleasance is spinning in his grave AND HE'S CREMATED IN AN URN.
The DVD should have one of those slip-sleeves that have a front flap you can open to see some dorky artwork with pull-quote overlays. When you open it, Devin shouts, "HOW DARE YOU!" just for checking it out.

Trust me Anthony, you didn't miss In the Valley of Elah. Michael Clayton was a fun diversion, but I don't see myself revisiting it anytime soon. Devin and Jeremy weren't nice to it, but it's not a bad movie, just an underwhelming one. As an aside, Wilkinson and Swinton are good. As for Youth Without Youth...

Well, as the Year of Brolin, I sort-of wish I saw In the Valley of Elah. I'm sure it wasn't great, and I'm certainly no fan of Haggis, but I wanted to see Tommy Lee Jones and Brolin.

Michael Clayton is written-and-directed by Tony Gilroy, stars George Clooney, and has an apparently award-worthy turn by Tom Wilkinson in a supporting role. Sure, it looks pretty cookie-cutter (and based upon Devin and Jeremy's comments, it is), but the buzz on Wilkinson (in addition to my love of Gilroy) should have gotten me in theaters (I may catch this one before the year is out, along with Atonement, Charlie Wilson's War, Ratatouille, Redacted, and Rescue Dawn).

Youth Without Youth, Rotten Tomatoes rating aside, is a film by Francis Ford Coppola. That is, at least for me, enough.

2 other films I wish I hadn't missed: Southland Tales (I know, I know, I'm still interested even though pretty much everyone says that it's a trainwreck) and The Walker (Paul Schrader? Sold.)
in no order....

Grindhouse
Black Book (which I saw this year, unlike The Host)
The Bourne Ultimatum
No Country For Old Men
Superbad/Knocked Up
Ratatouille
Hot Fuzz
Zodiac

This was the year I bought an HDTV and saw less movies in the theater than I have in a long time. Not sure if those two incidents are connected.

I still haven't seen these possible candidates...
Assassination of Jesse James, The Mist, Gone Baby Gone, The King Of Kong, Persepolis, The Lives Of Others, Once, Into The Wild

I just saw Juno tonight and it's a great little film. Not sure if it deserves a spot on my list yet.

God med school ate up too much time so I'll try to hammer out a list

Ratatouille
Knocked Up
Hot Fuzz
The Bourne Ultimatum
Stardust

(I saw a lot of crap sadly. Also having friends means you give into their shitty taste)
1. No Country For Old Men
2. Hot Fuzz
3. Zodiac
4. Grindhouse
5. Ratatouille

I liked these a lot, but I know they'll get knocked off the list...
Transformers(this one might stay on the list, we'll see. It's stupidy entertaining)
The Host
300
(on a purely visual level)

Dying to see: the Mist, There Will Be Blood, the Bourne Ultimatum, Sunshine, Assassination of Jesse James, Black Book, Eastern Promises and American Gangster.

Movies that I will watch if someone else buys/rents them: Superbad, The Darjeeling Limited, Gone Baby Gone, Live Free or Die Hard, and Sweeny Todd.

Disappointments that I will still buy on DVD because I'm a FX whore/retard: I Am Legend, Pirates 3. I already bought Spidey 3(which I actually prefer overall to the first one).
Pretty much in this order:

No Country For Old Men
The Darjeeling Ltd.
Grindhouse
Superbad
Hot Fuzz
Knocked up
The Mist
300
Transformers

That's actually about all I saw this year (except for 30 Days of Night, which sucked). I'd say Transformers wasn't really that great, but it had giant robots fighting, so I could look past all of the retardedness because the 5 year old in me was elated.
Looking over these lists, I am going to miss 2007 SO. GOD-DAMNED. HARD.

It's odd, but I think this was the year that reaffirmed, beyond any doubt, my love of movies. I cannot think of another year in my conscious lifetime that has seen more greatness.
10. Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon
9. Eastern Promises
8. Atonement
7. Zodiac
6. Hot Fuzz
5. The Bourne Ultimatum
4. Lars and the Real Girl
3. Into the Wild
2. The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
1. No Country for Old Men

Fucking hard list to make I'll tell you that. There are so many that I wanted to include (Sweeney Todd, The Mist, Superbad, Juno) but they had to be cut for one reason or another. I still haven't seen There Will Be Blood, Charlie Wilson's War, or a shitload of others that I should have, but there's the list anyway.

I realize that Behind the Mask is technically a 2006 release, but I believe it received a limited run in early 2007, therefore I included it in this year's list.
1. Once
2. No Country For Old Men

11. The Bourne Ultimatum
12. Grindhouse
13. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
14. Stardust
15. King of Kong

Honorable Mention: American Gangster, TMNT, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, Transformers, 300, Alpha Dog, Black Snake Moan, Eastern Promises, Walk Hard, Superbad, Sunshine

Still Haven't Seen: There Will Be Blood, Into The Wild, I'm Not There, The Assassination of Jesse James, Margot At The Wedding, Behind The Mask, Sweeney Todd, Darjeeling Limited, Southland Tales, Bug, Persepolis, Juno, Redacted, Shoot 'Em Up, Charlie Wilson's War, I Am Legend. Sigh.

The Fountain and Police Beat are there due to how fucking awful British release times are.

Honourable mentions to La Vie En Rose, Perfume, The Lives of Others, Storm Warning, Have You Another Apple, A Man's Job and Tell No One.

Agreed, and there are still an assload of flicks that came out in 2007 that I need to see. I've been making these lists for a good 10 years now (mostly in emails to people that probably don't give a damn), and this is the toughest time I've had coming up with a top 10. Those 10 movies don't even scratch the surface when it comes to the awesome that was 2007. If 2008 is even half as good I'll be happy.

Over here it was released in 06, but is it possible just to put an asterisk next to every #1 pick for the next few years which reads "#1 movie that ISN'T The Fountain". Yes? No?

Compiled my list on the train and holy fuck, it was difficult. I think I saw at least 100 movies, in the theater, no less; a new effin record (yay for having a job!). Whittling it down to 10...oh man, tougher than dental work.

10. 300
9. Atonement
8. Superbad
7. The Mist
6. Ratatouille

The US release of The Fountain was actually 11/22/06. Spike & the rest of the UK had to wait until 01/26/07 to bask in the glow of D.A.'s brilliance.

Edit: Nuts, I missed Wayden & Spike's posts.
