More MF Doom haterz.

Doom's ATL show last week (the one that went down after Dethklok, in a different venue) didn't go so well, I guess. The following great message is floating around from the show's promoter, and in an ironically related note to the Pitchfork discussion in the Deerhoof thread, PFork has pulled the page of photos and commentary they originally posted about the show.

To make matters even worse MF DOOMS appointed doorman took off with all the money from the door after the show! As soon as we realized the money was stolen we decided to help ourselves to all of MF DOOMS merchandise which included a bunch of T shirts and posters. So, in an effort to make it up to everyone who walked away feeling cheated, we’re giving away all the merchandise for free so come and get it while supplies last!! And if that’s not enough, feel free to let MF DOOM aka Daniel Dumile know how you really feel by calling him at his home in Kennesaw Georgia.

I don't know or care who MF Doom is but this is awesome.

Wow. I read Pitchfork on and off but it's been awhile - I missed this one tho.

No idea who that is, but that is aces.

Doom has some issues i guess. There have been reports that for a while, after KMD but before he started getting the indie cred, he was down on his luck couch hopping. He supposedly was rocking the gladiator mask for the duration of this period.
Scratch magazine did an interview with him around the time dangerdoom came out and he sent a some dude in a Doom mask to the photoshoot. They figured it out pretty quick though.
Great MC but 30 bucks for a doom show? No way in hell.

On disc he's a pretty great MC. Live, he's created a reputation for sending out fakes (he wears a mask on stage, making that easier) and lip syncing.

Check this YouTube clip where, whether it's the real Doom or not, he's obviously not saying anything -- his voice sounds completely different over the PA than the hype guy's, and there's a point where a vocal grunt or something is heard when the mic is nowhere near his mouth. (Around 1:20)

Saw him, Madlib and ol' Dilla at the el rey like five years ago and he was actually rapping and didn't seem up to any untoward hi jinks. Mediocre stage presence at the end of the day. But I'm still a big fan.

Maybe you just have to get him on TV to stop him from lip synching:

Damn, I love MF Doom and from all I'd heard his live shows were supposed to be fucking stellar. Unfortunate.

He's still the best MC in the business. Who really sees hip hop live and doesn't expect suck, anyway?

ummm... what?
I'm just saying. I've seen some hip hops shows. They're not very good or entertaining. That's all.

Hey, Parkers got a point. A lot of the time MCs make some terrible mistakes that are not exclusive to hiphop but are very prevalent. Number one problem is too many hype men.
At a GhostFace and Rakim show a couple weeks Ghost comes out with at least four other dudes with mics. They backed him up on pretty much every single line and I actually saw him roust one guy for dropping one.
Problem was the show sounded terrible when anyone but ghost was rapping which was 90 percent of the time. But for that 10 pecent he was killing it.
Contrast that with Rakim who followed. one man, one mic. Amazing, clear and entertaining. If he comes to your town go buy a ticket.
Other remarkably good HipHop artists that I have seen are:
A Tribe Called Quest
J Live
KRS 1
Ugly Duckling
Snoop Dogg
Outkast
Count Bass D
EDAN
The Roots
and I need to stop there. But needless to say those are just a few of many, many Hip Hop artists who dont suck live. It can be a crap shoot though.

Way to paint with a broad brush.

Doesn't he have some rap beef with Mos Def?

Yeah, love the music he puts out, but live he's shit. I saw him after Dangerdoom dropped, and I was there last week (and, no, I ain't pay no $30) and it's obvious that Doom has no respect for his fans. Don't make people wait until 1:30am on a school night to start performing, especially the "hometown" crowd. Don't lip sync. Don't "perform" for less than thirty minutes. Don't try to buy us off with two pairs of your Nike SBs in hella small sizes that you couldn't pawn off on your boys.

Boo. I wish I'd known about the Dethklok show.

I want to say that's generalizing and I know a lot of you do too. But I've seen far too many shit shows to disagree with that statement.

I'm sure bringing a posse on stage does wonders for your ego but 9 times out of 10 they're inhibiting an otherwise (mostly) good show. I saw Common at Austin City Limits last September and he was a fill-in for Rodrigo y Gabriela, who, for the uninitiated, are the polar opposite of hip-hop. So Common had his work cut out for him. Say what you will about the guy, but he managed to get an indie hipster dipshit crowd numbering around a thousand into his music. I admire that.

The shows people tell me are great live like the Roots or Lupe Fiasco haven't played anywhere near me, but I hear both startlingly resemble their studio sound. Rap puts up a lot for show, it's just a different kind of show than the kind of show bands like the Flaming Lips or Arcade Fire put up.

That and I'm white. So take that as you will.

The lowdown on MF Doom here...

and I thought MF Doom was just one of those crazy CHUD message board posters...

I'm so out of touch with the music these days.

It's a shame he didn't put on a good show, but the fact that the concert promoter posted Dumile's address like that was overstepping his bounds, as it's obvious Dumile has some problems he's dealing with and he's also got a pretty upsetting past in the industry.

I haven't really been listening to his MF Doom work, but remember his work as Zev Love X with the fantabulous K.M.D.

I posted about them here a while back on MOG.com, a blog website for music junkies.

I agree that listing the address was over the line, which is why I didn't reprint it when I posted his statement here.

My favorite part of this story is Pitchfork silently pulling their photos and coverage, especially since the piece is up over at the Stones Throw (Doom's label) website. They didn't have the balls to print a retraction or man up about their totally erroneous coverage.
I'd like to read that coverage... how 'bout a link.

Thanks!
