You have not been touched because you do not believe. Open your mind!

I should be excited by this news but I'm not. I'll believe the game actually exists when I'm playing it on my PC.

I've been having issues trying to get the video to not play. Damn thing starts as soon as you open the page.

Looks good but if there is no release date yet I gotta agree that the engine will be fairly obsolete by the time it might maybe may be released.

Is that a joke or a prediction?
It says something about the history of this game that I have to ask that.

If the game design is good, a obsolete engine will not hurt it that much.
Frankly, they need to settle on a engine and stick to it.It's this endless "we have to upgrade to state of the art" that has made this a joke.

Both. And yeah, it does.

I've spent the past 2 days trying NOT to read news while at work (gotta get that productivity up!) and this is what happens.

Seriously, WTF? If this game actually does come out ever, I honestly ... I, uh ... fuck it, I'll just buy it. I can't say no to you Duke Nukem.

Is this going to end up being another Superman Returns situation? I mean, given the false starts and restarts and multiple teams, how much money has been sunk into this ten-year development? Is there any way this thing can make money at this point once you roll all the costs together?

And just to cover all the possible sarcastic responses to this post:
"Yes, if it's boring"
"Yes, if Duke spends the whole game lifting heavy things"
"Yes, if Duke stalks his ex-girlfriend"

It looks like any other random first person shooter. Bleh.

Well, there's no way that the game can justify a decade-long development process, so it's almost bound to be a let-down. But even leaving that aside, and keeping expectations down-to-earth, yes, I agree. It looks like the standard FPS template.

Ahhh, memories...
If the New Game does not have the Shrink and Squash combo in it, I ain't buying it. Won't be a Duke Nukem without it.

It just struck me. I think they have spent longer making Duke Nukem Forever then Michaleangelo took to paint the Sistine Chapel. And somehow I don't think the final product will justify the time and effort .
Yeah, it looks like any other FPS. It might be fun,but I agree there is no freaking way you can justify ten years put into one game unless it turns out to be better then Duke Nukem 3d,Half Life and the GTA series worked into one. And I don' t think that will happen..

What I would like to know is how this is even possible. Investors must have jumped out windows by year three. Did they run around looking for funding while coding in their basement? Somewhere here is an interesting story.

Did either of you even watch the clip? He explicitly asks if there's a shrink ray and then does the crushing thing.

  • Duke Nukem Forever was officially announced on April 28, 1997 along with the purchase of a license to use the Quake II engine and the intention of releasing the game no later than mid-1998
  • In June 1998, the 3D Realms team switched to Epic's Unreal Engine.
  • In 1999, 3D Realms announced that they had upgraded to the newer version of the Unreal Engine.
  • In early December 2000, publisher Gathering of Developers announced that they had acquired the publishing rights for Forever. Shortly afterwards, 3D Realms released another Christmas card that suggested that Forever would be released in 2001.
  • In August 2001, Gathering closed down and Take-Two Interactive took over the publishing rights for Forever.
  • In 2002, after hiring several new programmers, the team completely rewrote the renderer and other game engine modules, beginning work on a new generation of game content. Broussard estimated that around 95% of the previous level design work was scrapped in the process.
  • On May 20, 2003, Jeffrey Lapin, then CEO of Take Two, told reporters that the game would not be out by the end of 2003.
  • On September 9, 2004, GameSpot reported that Duke Nukem Forever had switched to the Doom 3 engine.
  • On March 20, 2007, Scott Miller explained in an interview with YouGamers that they were still using the Unreal Engine, albeit a heavily modified version at this point.

And then it went quiet. Until the christmas trailer.

This thing has literally changed engine and developer every time a new one was released, that's how they've kept it going so long.

Jesus, talk about a monetary black hole. Scrapping probably hundreds of thousands of dollars of work every few years to switch engines? You would think by the third developer they would smell something fishy is cooking.

Lets see if this frankenstein is worth the decade wait (most likely not).

1999's screenshots

I would pay a couple of quid to have played that old version.

This is also one of those projects that a new iteration of developers just wants to start from scratch because nobody wants to work on top of other people's work, so I can totally see the subsequent technical teams always recommending the switches in the game engine.

There is no technical continuity to this project at all, worse, there is no indication that there was any consistent innovating game idea here they were going for.

good lord, we all wait 8 years for a game, then once it comes out you'll most likely have to upgrade or get a new PC...figures..
I won't have to buy shit. If it doesn't come out for the 360, fuck it. I'm not upgrading my PC for games anymore. It's a losing proposition.
It's supposed to come out for the Xbox 360 and PS3 as well. Those pics are unlockables in Duke Nukem 3D for XBLA.
Well that's nice. Of course, I'm still going to hold out for reviews. My confidence is not high.
