Historical Events That Would Make Great Movies. - Page 3

Um... you yanks do realise that there's history that happened outside the US right?

I can't find the old thread, but a great case was made for Finland's Winter War.

I've championed this idea before, but it's just one I'd love to see.

A movie about the rivalry between "The Amazing" James Randi and Uri Gellar would be awesome. The story itself expresses the social divide between skepticism and faith (or, charlatanism), with skepticism triumphant in the end. It doesn't hurt that the story is also hilarious, as Randi is the best kind of asshole (Bill Murray should play him), and during this episode Gellar (Eric Bana would nail this role) was getting more and more desperate to prove that he had magic powers as Randi was cornering him. There's an episode involving a potted plant that I can't remember the specifics of, but when I read about it I could not stop laughing.

We see movies all the time about "the beauty of faith", but I think it's high time we had a movie about manning up to call hucksters on their bullshit. There's a lot of potential for an absolutely savage satire there, and it's been supplied by real life.

Yeah, fat chance of that happening.

It's not that far-fetched-- there are currently two rival projects in the works about Harry Houdini and Arthur Conan Doyle and their whole believer/skeptic thing.

What surprises me is that there hasn't yet been a two-hander about Howard Cosell and Muhummad Ali.

Yeah there may be films about it, but I'll bet they will pussyfoot like mad around the belief/skepticism conflict.

I believe there was a Cleopatra film in development with Angelina Jolie in the starring role. It was going to be filmed on location in Egypt, as events happened its been scrapped.

The Great Siege of Malta

There's no doubt in my mind that this cries for either an epic Ridley Scott film or a bloody as hell Neil Marshall film,

Speaking of epic Ridley Scott films, I really really hope he finally gets to make Tripoli before he retires (that'd be a great topic for a cockblock column actually)

The fall of Nineveh and the destruction of the Assyrian empire would also be awesome. As epic as Pellenor Fields in LOTR only with the outcome reversed.

As kind of a geek for both of these wildly different eras, I actually have to wonder if there's really been much of anything film wise on ancient Mesopotamia, or the medieval/renaissance era Ottoman Empire? It just seems odd that we don't have anything that really focuses on these eras or people at all.

And yeah, I'm sure somebody will make a good logical reason for why an unimaginative studio system would never touch this...so I'll save some face and I'd love to see some big gory war movie about the Teutonic Knights in Lithuania. That's gotta be something that needs coverage.

A film about the real Vlad Dracula and or Countess Elizabeth Bathroy. Eli Roth could direct.

Personally I'd like to see a modern Battle of Midway film, a sinking of the Bismark film, and a film about the Falklands War.

I would love to see a great film about Cook's exploration and eventual sacrifice in Hawai'i. I would love to see a movie about the Spanish entrance at Tenochtilan. I liked Apocalypso. A film about River of Doubt would be fun as well.

The Battle took place on my High School's property and I always thought that the actual massacre sequence could be something really visceral in the right hands.

I'm really surprised there hasn't been a Madame CJ Walker movie. Period costumes, multiple husbands, business tycon, happy ending - it seems to have everthing. Perfect for Queen Latifah. She's in a lot of shitty movies, but she's a good actress.
