What To Do In Vancouver

So I'm here for the next five days, after arriving yesterday for a holiday party. Never been here before. I'm staying downtown. Besides climbing mountains what's some good stuff to do here?

See as much of Stanley Park as you can. Walk the Seawall that lines its perimetre (it might be blocked off at a point though since we had a lot of trees falling this year).

If you're more of an alternative lifestyle person check out the Drive, otherwise known as Commercial Drive.

Check out our beaches. Kitsilano for the posh, Jericho for the simplistic and Wreck for the really simplistic (Vancouver's own nude beach).

There's lots more to do, but I don't know what you like to do.

Drink heavily and watch movies. And such. Things I know you can do anywhere, but there must be some nice places to do both here. I'm much more of a city guy than a look at trees guy.

Plus, it's winter anyway. Nude beaches in December?? You'd see lots of the infamous Icy Breasts though..

Hey, I was just putting it out there! Naked Polar Bear Club? I don't know.

Hm. Pacific Cinematheque seems to be playing restorations of a couple of Peter Greenaway's movies.

And VanCity's playing a Mexican movie, The Violin. Which apparently Guillermo del Toro liked:

“One of the most amazing Mexican films in many a year...filmmaking in its purest form... [it] moves us with its lyricism and shakes us with its honesty. A film that’s moving, urgent and necessary. In The Violin lies the future of Mexican cinema.” —Guillermo del Toro

Then again, you could always go Mainstream and check out Tinseltown or Scotiabank/Paramount Theatre.

I'm in Alberta for the winter but I can promise that Granville street will not let you down. The downtown strip of Granville and Robson have ANYTHING you want.

Well last night I walked up (i'm staying right at the water next to the Granville bridge) Granville to Robson and then went right, seeing Yaletown, and walking until I found water and ended up back where I was staying, then I walked up Howe to Robson to get a book at Chapters then went left on Robson and looked at everything there (including all the cute Japanese girls), then walked back.

Today I walked across the Granville bridge and checked out Granville island, ate some overly expensive, mediocre chinese food at the Public Market, then walked back.

Tonight I'll probably walk up to the Scotiabank Theater to see Walk Hard.

Would like to hear more about the nightlife in Vancouver.

Oh, and as an LA guy I've been freezing my ass off here. The rain last night certainly didn't help.

Aside from Scotia bank ads that piss me off, the Scotia Theater is my favorite in Vancouver. You'll get ALOT of Vancouver Film School students there, and the midnight advanced screening of Transformers is one I will NEVER forget.

I suggest going to Cactus Club or Earls on Robson. Fantastic food and even better environment.

Oh and don't bother with the Japanese chicks.

No sucky sucky?

And yeah there were certainly a lot more commercials than I'm used to seeing before the movie... of course I usually see movies at the Arclight or the Landmark. It was a nice enough theater. I wasn't annoyed by the audience, which is a common occurrence in LA. I'll take Goobers over Glosettes though. They definitely have any fast food you might want to punish your body with in that place.

Hey, I went to that midnight screening of Transformers too.

Yeah, I still call the Scotiabank Theatre the Paramount. I think it'll be the Paramount for me for years. But whatever.

This is typical Vancouver weather, by the way. Rain, sleet, snow.

Well, both yesterday and today it managed to not rain while I was out. It rained in the morning while I was sleeping, and stopped by the time I was ready to go out. So that has worked out. Today I walked a lot again. All the way up Granville from under the bridge to Robson, stopped at HMV and bought some DVDs, then walked all the way down Robson to Denman, down Denman to Beach, and back to Granville. My legs are hurting.

What's the easiest and more importantly cheapest way for me to get to the airport on Tuesday?

Thanks!

This town seems to have a real problem with public urination. Twice now I've walked by a pisser on the street. One of the times a guy just started pissing on a tree on the sidewalk right in the light.
Yeah, that's pretty gross. If you REALLY want to have fun with public urination and intravenous drug use go visit Hastings and Main! You can also pick up crack whores on the cheap!

Figured there's no point in starting another thread...

Where are some photogenic places in Vancouver? Cool architecture, bridges, etc. Same goes for good eats and such. I have my car but I don't particularly feel like driving all over(the mph/kmh thing is more confusing than I expected, despite kmh being writtin on my speedometer all tiny-like).

I'm over in Victoria now but I plan on hitting up the city in the next couple days. I've had my fill of beach photos at this point unless it's something that would knock my socks off. Thanks!
