The second-person plural technique works really well. I was skeptical at first but those first two paragraphs sold me. I'm about 150 pages into it and I love how it goes from wacky office shenanigans to being really sad, often on the same page.

Jesus, when Janine talks about why she goes to the PlayPlace, that was some heart-rendering shit right there.

Bump. Just picked this one up from the library on my lunch break, and dammit for not having time to start it before having to be back on the clock. Impressions to follow later on tonight!

Yeah, this book is adding to my hatred for my office job. On the other hand, it's awesome. Thanks a lot, Joshua Ferris.

Great funny book although gets really really depressing as things wind down. Highly recommend.

Oh my god, this book. Yeah, everyone needs to read this ASAP if they haven't already. You guys weren't kidding about the depressing part, but it's still so, so funny and heartbreaking all at the same time.

Just making a brief appearance on the boards to say that I agree wholeheartedly with everything written above. The second-person narrative device was a little irritating for the first few pages and the next thing I knew I was completely taken by these characters and this very specific world that they live in. When I read it again a few months ago I couldn't believe that I forgot the drama over the relocated office furniture. A lot of the situations are silly and over the top but still firmly grounded in these very real fears and insecurities that you don't necessarily have to work in a corporate environment to relate to. I read this, The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, and Special Topics in Calamity Physics, one after the other. I had a really great commute for about two weeks.
