Good indy comics?

Ok, I admit it.. I haven't been keeping up with comics over the last few years. I used to be into a lot of the indy/underground comics like Peepshow, Palookaville, Dirty Plotte, American Splendor, Usagi Yojimbo, Optic Nerve, Cerebus, etc... the whole superhero thing never did much for me. While I'm not opposed to a good superhero comic, I generally feel that most are generic pap that I just don't want to bother with. Of course there are always exceptions.

Money has been a key factor for me over the last few years.. I just haven't been able to afford to keep checking out new titles without solid recommendations from people I trust. Now that I've finally gotten a full time job with benefits, I'll have a little spare cash and would love to get into some new GOOD comics. Anyone into the indy scene that can point me in the right direction? I've been known to dig a lot of Fantagraphics titles and some good autobiographical stuff. I've been meaning to build up my Crumb collection, and I will.. but there's so much damned work of his that it would take a year of paychecks to collect it all.

Just fishing for ideas...

Kevin Huizenga's "Ganges" manages to artfully skirt between tenderness and uncomfortable humor. Pick up the hardcover.

I came here expecting recommendations for Indiana Jones comic books, damnit!

Also, look here and here.

Jared Melton, I was just going to recommend Marvel Comics Indiana Jones run in the 80's. Is Judge Dredd Independant? I recommend 2000 AD's comics...especially Dredd.

Paul Chadwick's Concrete is fantastic, and easy to catch up on 'cause he works so slow. Best stories are Fragile Creature and The Human Dilemma.

Bryan Lee O'Malley's Scott Pilgrim is best described as a Canadian manga. Volume 4, out of a promised seven, just came out this fall.

Love and Rockets is actually two parallel series by the brothers Gilbert and Jaime Hernandez. It's some of the best-drawn work out there, and their affinity for realistic female characters is striking. Best Gilbert collection to start with is Love and Rockets X; for Jaime I like Chester Square.

Tom Beland's True Story Swear To God is a unique, autobiographical account of the author finding true love and professional satisfaction. It's simple, sentimental and unforgettable.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll be looking into some of them. I suppose I should have said "independent" instead of indy, heh. I'll compose a list to bring with me next time I head down to my local comic shop.

I have been reading Concrete and love it - easily one of my favorites, not sure why I didn't mention it in my original post. I am familiar with Love and Rockets as well.. though I've only borrowed and never bought any. It's been a few years, though.

I keep hearing Black Hole is good, anybody checked it out? I'm not even sure who writes/draws it.
