This film fucked me up.

Weird... I just ordered this. Haven't watched it yet.

The ending still raises all the hairs on my arms.

The doc on the DVD claims that Steele was meant to be a portrayal of Bogart as a person. Sounds like a marketing twist but [i-want-to-believe.jpg]

I saw there was some talk/chatter about this in the "about to watch" thread, so I thought I would give it a bump and see if we had any new opinions on it.

It's a movie that I stick to my original assessment on (see above), and it's a movie that I find myself thinking about often.

My favorite classic discovery of the year, no doubt.

Nicholas Ray movies are so often about showing things from the outsider's pov, he makes a point of standing up for characters that, in most other classic HOllywood films, would be portrayed as unambigious villiains. Dixon Steele (most noir name ever?) has a level of snark, cynicism and anger worthy of a current indie comic protagonist, and yet Ray (and Bogart's extradorinaryily sensitive performance) makes us feel for and root for him, even though we're not sure if he did actually do it or not.

Has this been released on DVD? I remember really enjoying it when I originally watched it, and I'd love to be able to see it again.

Yeah, it's out on DVD. It's a single disc from Warner Brothers, but I think it's got decent features.

Just saw this yesterday. One of my professors burned me a copy because he thought I'd like it (he was right). Apparently the studio hated the ending. I imagine the studio would hate the ending now. I think this would make a great companion piece to Sunset Blvd.
