Japanese Bug Fights!

I can't make up my mind if this is cruelty to animals or not (more accurately: if I'm offended by it... as it's probably cruel). I abhor this kind of treatment to the higher species (dogs, etc), but being a resident of Florida for the past couple years, I've been entrenched in a battle with the insect kingdom. They are the enemy.

All I know is that the makers of this series missed a big opportunity by not compositing these guys in front of cityscapes or better yet, not including model buildings and cars in the ring/cage. I'm also amused when I hear English words like SCORPION and POISONOUS pop up amongst the Japanese lingo. Don't they have translations for those words?

EDIT: Could have been a great tie-in with the Japanese-only Wii title, ESCAPE FROM BUG ISLAND.

I love the Japanese so much. All that fallout made them awesome.

Yeah, it's definitely missing some fist-pumping music.

I want to get some friends together that haven't watched these, get good and drunk, and place some bets.

Later on we'll hi-five Michael Vick.

I immediately thought of the Snake VS Mongoose fight from the beginning of Any Which Way You Can and the Scorpion battle from Jarhead. Or the Animal Planet ANIMAL FACE-OFF.

We've got American Gladiators and BattleBots.

Those Japanese are crazy.

In the rock/paper/scissors of the insect world, Fire BURNS Wood!

I love the announcer. He has such enthusiasm.

I'm really surprised the scorpions aren't doing better.

I can't wait for UFC 85: Liddel / Centipede

As a side note, I'm now taking up a collection to fly me out to Japan, one way. I will survive off my love of all things there.

Fuck centipedes. Everyone knows that spiders are the fiercest killers in the insect kingdom.

Don't fuck with the hornet man. The Praying Mantis, Kung Fu inspiration that it is, still stood no chance against it.
I'm not offended but I do feel pretty bad for the bugs involved. It's mostly a fight to the death after all. The praying mantis definitely isn't equipped to take on most of it's opponents.

Well, when the Mantis is defeated, his brother will train that much harder and take revenge. After all, we're all a part of the "Kumite of Life".
That is 100% cruel. I don't see how making anything fight to the death could not be.

I felt really bad for the Praying Mantis, poor buggers don't have a chance in hell.

Cruelty or not, when the giant space bugs arrive to conquer earth, Japan's pretty much fucked thanks to that site.

I for one welcome our new Hornet Overlords!

I would be all for a video game, movie, or anything else of that nature. It's not that the entertainment factor isn't there, so the minute it's simulated and not real I'm cheering on the tarantula!

So what. You mean you never used chewing gum, ants, and hotwheels to make your own insect parade? I did.

So wait, you refuse to cheer him on at THIS moment, when he needs all the encouragement to stay alive? That's cruel... *sniff*

Get out your foam finger (or fist)! Tarantula is up against the ropes and he needs you!

This was a nice work-distraction for a couple days. jj

Damn the beetles tore that shit up in the second half. Beetles are fucking bad-ass!

The scorpions were hit-and-miss, but they always had the most satisfying kills. When they finally get a good stinger in, and their opponent starts twitching and flopping around. Good stuff. One of the best fights by far was the scorpion vs. scorpion battle.

Centipedes are fun to watch fight, but in the end they are made of fail and dead.

What the CHRIST is that giant, flat thing with the spindly legs and pinchers? It fights a massive praying mantis near the end of the first half, and it disturbed the fuck out of me. Tarantula took it down like a bitch later, though. So "fuck you" you huge flat nightmare.

I felt sorta bad for a couple of these guys. Check out round 18. Vicious. What an awful way to go. And round 27... that poor grasshopper-thing.

Amblypygids, particularly the species Phrynus marginemaculatus and Damon diadema, are thought to be one of the few species of arachnids that show signs of social behavior. Research conducted at Cornell University by entomologists suggests that mother amblypygids comfort their young by gently caressing the offspring with her feelers. Further, in an experiment where two or more siblings were placed in an unfamiliar environment, such as a cage, they would seek each other out and gather back in a group.
Jesus Christ! We've got smart bugs!

You're one of those little bastards who spent their youth melting bugs with a magnifying glass and pulling the legs off spiders aren't you? Aren't you?!

A tailless whip scorpion makes an appearance in the movie Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, as the Death Eater, Barty Crouch Jr, while impersonating Mad-Eye Moody, uses in a demonstration of the Unforgivable Curses (whereas in the book he uses a spider).

Neat! They've been -in- movies, at least!
