Usually direct to DVD implies poor funding and poor quality. As a near rabid fan of the original film, this almost breaks my heart creatively.

Never seen the Dark Crystal, but that right there is enough to get me interested in the sequel.

I'm sad.

Damn, I was pretty excited about this.

This is fine with me. IMO, Dark Crystal is a notoriously overrated movie and people who like it only do so because they remember it fondly from their childhoods, like Clash of the Titans or Labyrinth or Neverending Story. Besides, with CGI, puppets are no longer necessary, and when I watched Empire Strikes Back recently, I noticed that you OT fanboys are deluding yourselfs with that Yoda puppet. He looks so bad! His mouth doesn't even move. Compare to Revenge of the Sith and that scene where he touches his head on the horizontal elevator because he feels sad about Anakin and you will see the difference between 80s FX and the evolving majesty of ILM.

You must think you're awfully important to assume I am baiting you just because my opinion does not agree. I happen to live in America where freedom of speech is a God given right, so back off my right to enjoy CGI and say so.

Aside from the term "notoriously overrated", I actually agree with Don Piano, I'm ashamed to say. As for the rest of your post...

Dark Crystal is a poor film when it comes to narrative and the like, but it deserves at least some recognition on the visual front. The scenes with entire animated forests are really rather imaginative.

It's a simple and straightforward fairy tale (and yet, still managed to surprise with a few twists and genuinely unique ecosystem). What's poor about ithe narrative?

Why is The Dark Crystal notoriously overrated? I'd like a point by point breakdown.

Yeah, it's really only got a cult status... and if you review the parameters of what it means to be a cult flick, it meets the criteria. Personally, I think it's UNDERRATED, and deserves more love and attention.

This is the first and last time The Dark Crystal will ever be referred to as a "franchise."

The David Odell/Annette Odell/Craig Pearce screenplay that went nowhere is finally going somewhere, as Boom Studios is publishing it as a twelve issue comic book. The first installment is scheduled to see print in February 2017.
