I Recently Made a Horrible Mistake - Page 5

I must say Trek has been part of my life since the early days but in an odd way as my dad is strictly an original crew kind of guy and my step dad and TNG and DS9 kind of guy.

I remember my dad taking me to see 6 at the the theatre and then leaving and making a hard choice at Toy R Us on a Lego Pirate set or the airfix model of the Enterprise. I went with the latter which considering how many Lego's I own is rare.

Mainly though I watched TNG and DS9 while in grade school and Jr High and dropped it like a bad habit in HS, although smart enough not to get rid of playmates tricorder and and phaser and Enterprise D which are slowy becoming worth a mint.

That being said, since then I have always been an original cast kind of guy.

The only DVD's I own are Khan and Undiscovered, and am looking to add DC TMP once I find a copy. And perhaps TOS once I join the Blu Ray camp. and DS9 if the strike never ends.

You know, I used to watch DS9 when I was kid late at night before I got to sleep. I think it would re-run on WB or one of those channels. I don't think I ever paid much attention to it, but I simply loved the intro music.

I remember DS9 seeming the best of the bunch, but I only caught it here and there as they kept shifting the time all over the place. Not to mention I was a pretty busy kid so I never had a regular viewing schedule. Being in Grad School now I have never had the time or money to get fully caught up.

I remember Voyager, Picardo was the only good thing in the beginning then it got good for a bit, and then went to shit fast, and seeing as this coincided with HS, and the arrival of the Next Gen movies its easy to see why one backed of there casual Trek habit.

I own Khan, Voyage Home, Generations and First Contact on DVD as well as S2 of TOS. I've been listening to the commentaries lately and I was surprised at how good the commentary by Ron Moore and Brannon Braga is on Generations. The guys talk about everything very honestly and tell what did work and what didn't work about the movie. Well worth the listen.

Haven't gotten to The Voyage Home commentary yet, which should prove to be an interesting one.

Also wondering if I should get The Search For Spock and Undiscovered Country on DVD. I remember enjoying them, but it's been a while.

My Flatmate bought this yesterday. He watched it that same evening. This morning he phoned in sick to work. hmmmmm

So what do we think of the teaser?
I'm encouraged. We got exactly what I was expecting, which was a shot of the ship, and the big theme. It's not a lot to go on, but at least I know they're not reinventing the wheel, a la Godzilla. If they can keep in mind what made the original series appealing, it can work. But I really need to see some live-action footage before I can get excited.

With the strike over, hopefully they can fix some of the problems they've been talking about. The teaser tells us nothing, other than the propulsion system has been up-downgraded?

My guess would be cast reveal with the full trailer on Indy IV, but as for the film itself, my instinct tells me with shooting compromised by the strike the film will not be that great.
Of course, it may not have been great without the strike. My confidence in JJ Abrams is moderate at best.

I say it's even money that the Enterprise crew finds a mysterious artifact in Act 1 that turns out to have something else mysterious inside it in Act 2 and lights up in Act 3.

As long as we're done with solving every problem by creating a resonance burst through the deflector dish to reverse the polarity of chronoton particles, we'll be taking a step up.

The Star Trek movies are VERY hit-and-miss with me. The ones I like, I can watch a million times over. The ones I dislike are not allowed to ever come close to my eyes again. There seems to be no middle ground.

Insurrection is definitely one that falls into the "dislike" pile. Sadly, I can remember most of the film still. No, I can't explain that. Nemesis was bad too, but it was slightly more entertaining. It just happens to be dumber. I still think Star Trek V is the worst, though.

I like THE MOTION PICTURE because it ends with Tales of the Gold Monkey fucking a girl-machine into the 8th dimension. I'm pretty sure it's the only movie with that ending, although I haven't seen Juno yet.
Lifeforce comes pretty close. Except the girl has... hair.
The girl in Lifeforce has hair? I didn't even know she had a face.
Does anyone else think a real documentary of the making of Star Trek V would be really good? I'm curious how, after the success of IV, the studio was willing to just let one of the actors do a big summer sequel, his first movie no less. I know he probably gets whatever Nimoy gets, but I'm sure they could have paid Shatner extra to NOT direct it. I hear he's willing to do things for money.

I think the interest level of a Star Trek V doc would depend on everybody's willingness to be completely honest about it. I don't see everybody doing that. And by everybody, I mean Shatner.

Your investigation should still have turned up something.

Well, remember that Nimoy had set a good precedent for acting/directing on III and IV, which the Shat apparently used as leverage. His daughter Lisabeth covers most of the details in her book Captain's Log.

Yeah, on the documentary/interviews on the ST V DVD. Bennett and Ralph Winter not only discuss what went wrong and why, they take more than their share of the blame. The only one who seems slightly oblivious is Shatner himself.

They were in a real bind. What most people don't remember was that Paramount had no choice. Shatner had a clause in his STAR TREK IV contract that said if he signed on to act in IV, then the studio had to let him direct STAR TREK V. And since you can't have STAR TREK IV without Captain Kirk, just what the hell were they to do?
That's basically the same barrel Nimoy had them over for III. He only agreed to bring Spock back to life if he got to direct. Fortunately for them, Nimoy turned out to have some talent for directing. Unfortunately for Shatner, lightning failed to strike twice.

I see. Boy, it seems like they let the money get spent in some strange ways, a pointless, surely expensive trip to Yosemite, yet cut-rate special effects? (and the actual campfire scene wasn't even done in yosemite.)
Oh yeah, Insurrection. When it started, somebody in the theater yelled out "Star Trek sucks!" (Am I the only one with this strange relationship to Next Generation: I like it, I consider myself a fan, if they made more movies I would see them, and yet I swear there's only like 13 really good episodes)

When that show was on its game, it was great. But honestly, it wasn't on its game all that often. And when it was off, it was painful.

If I recall correctly the writer's strike (not this one, that one) threw off their timetable and ILM was booked solid. They ended up shipping the miniatures to some FX company in New York that had never done spaceship movies before.

I heard Spielberg nearly shat his pants while filming Last Crusade when word got to him that Shatner was actually going to shoot scenes in Yosemite National Park. I'm pretty sure the casting of David Warner was what actually ate up a huge chunk of the budget. Resulting in us never getting to see Kirk fighting demons and rock monsters in the finale. A shame, really.
