I just watched the ASPHALT JUNGLE. Highly recommended noir and probably in my top 3 Huston.

Will eventually get to NIGHTMARE ALLEY as well. I'm checking out KEY LARGO tonight, which is another Huston classic and also an "up all night" flick.

Fucking love The Asphalt Jungle. Sterling Hayden is a very underrated actor, he sells that good-hearted thug routine like nobody's business. And that scene at the police station where they turn off the speakers? So weird and affecting.

Love Hayden. Love him.

A rep theater in my city (The Roxie, San Fran, respectively) is doing an awesome festival for two weeks at the end of August/beginning of September, called the NOT QUITE NOIR fest. It's an amazing lineup, including (but not limited to):

The Sadist, Day of the Outlaw, Hardcore, Rolling Thunder (!), The Woman Chaser (!), Mickey One, Obsession, Blue Collar, Bad Lieutenant (original), Thief and Cutter's Way.

I'm gonna live at that theater for those two weeks.

Robert Siodmak's The strange affair of Uncle Harry is a breezy little film about a man that plans to kill his overbearing sister. Which therein lies the problem with it, it's just too damn quaint for it's own good. Even George Sanders, who I'm used to seeing play the smug and callous cad is a complete wet blanket, a sympathetic one which works in his favour but there's no real friction between any of the characters as they're so polite towards each other.

The end credits asks you nicely not to disclose the ending to anyone that hasn't seen it. I won't give it away but it's so ridiculous, a kid would slap his forehead after seeing it.
