Re-Animator

Finally managed to see this film last night after having attempted to see it for the last two years (it plays sporadically on one of the TV Channels over here). To be honest I was a little taken aback at first, I don't know why but I was expecting something a lot goofier when I started watching so having the first 30 minutes (sans the Sweden parts) played kinda straight already had me a disadvantage.

Just when I'd got used to the film being 'serious' it went and threw me again by going absolutely nutty what with the dead cats, and severed head rape scene. I still pretty much loved the film though, largely because of Jeffery Combes and David Gale as Herbert West and his nemesis Dr. Hill respectively. Both of these guys really gave the film their all and it sort of elevates everything else around them. In particular Gale actually makes what would have been utterly ridiculous scenes (army of undead monsters spring to life and the aforementioned severed head rape) seem kinda creepy and Combes is just incredibly watchable and seriously creepy at all times.

Re-Animator is one of my fave horror flicks. To me though, Barbra Crampton was just as important to the success of this film, as Jeffrey Combes is. In a horror film, if you don't have a beautiful damsel in distress, to play off the mad scientist your film will be found to be flawed.

How I wish Gordon and Yuzna could get the financing to make that second trilogy they were talking about.

Check out the sequels. They kick all sorts of ass.

I thought Bride was just so-so. Haven't seen Beyond. Is it any good?

It kinda bugged me that the girl was the only one who could tell how much of a creep West actually was, I literally sat through the first 40 minutes of the film waiting for someone to cotton onto the fact that West was just insane, but it never happened...also apparently stuff which happens in Sweden, stays in Sweden.

The first one is a classic. i remember seeing it the theatre when it came out and iw as blown away by it. It's such a great piece of utterly insane filmmaking that comes together in so many way. The acting is great, the use of zombies, the gore, it's funny and scary too. And you pretty much can't go wrong with severed head rape.

not a big fan of the sequels, particularly the lasy one on dvd, which really just like a bad rip off of House On Haunted Hill (the remake) which was already not a very good movie.

Beyond will always have a place in my heart for its rat vs. severed penis fight scene.

If i remember correctly, and i may not be, HOHH was in an old hospital haunted by the ghost of the insane doctor who used to work there, and BR-A had something similar. but i may just be a hazy memory.

Jeffery Combs was a doctor in both.

The Bride of Re-Animator is to gore what Showgirls is to bare breasts.

Yeah, but you've got to wade through a lot of tedious nonsense to get to that scene. And the budget for a feature-length motion picture is a lot of money to spend on a glorified YouTube highlight.

I don't even remember that rat/penis scene. I do remember no-jaw drinking milk for no reason, though.

OK, no wonder I never saw the rat/penis fight. It's in the credits! Definitely the best part of the film, though... I laughed my ass off.

Forgot that Screamin' Mad George did the effects- no wonder they're so good. So much gore in this flick.

I saw Re-Animator when it first came out on video back in 85/86 (I forget which year it was.) I didn't know anything about it, had never read any Lovecraft and was turned off by the cheap-looking video box.

In retrospect, it was the perfect point of view to watch a movie. I thought it was great, and it opened up a new world of horror fiction to me.

I'd like to note From Beyond is equally great.
I also like Dagon, but it's an acquired taste.

I like the first half of Dagon.
It rather loses any subtlety or atmosphere it had in the second.
Nice faceoff effects, though.

I said in the Robot Jox thread that I've only seen one Stuart Gordon movie I didn't enjoy, and that was his first Masters of Horror episode. I stand by that statement.

Dreams of the Witchhouse wasn't that bad...

Love all his other HPL stuff. He needs to dip back into that well STAT!
