...and it's funded by the CIA. Illuminating article here, with very interesting information in tis founders, their philosophies, and where the money is really coming from.

Good lord, can you believe how up himself the author is. He doesn't even try to conceal the assumptions he makes about people that use Facebook.

And frankly, he's trying way too hard to make trivial shit seem EVIL

What's so great about 9/11/99?

Honestly...some people.

Kudos to Gabriel for finding the article.

I've never kidded myself about what it is Facebook and MySpace do (or even Blogger, though to a much, much lesser degree). But I continue to think articles like this are relevant for the uninformed, even if the author's being a little too reactionary (bitter might be a better word). I guess Facebook just seems that much more ominous though when you find out it's run by a neo-con futurist like Thiel.

On the other hand, I really should be careful about what I put there. I've done pretty well so far by keeping my phone number, my "clean" email address, and my other consumer accounts separate from them. Still though, it's easy to forget people still read that shit.

I thought Facebook was set up by a couple of kids from Harvard.

Every time I read something about how facebook/myspace/the internets don't really connect people, I have to call bullshit. It's not the pub, as the author points out. But I've used facebook to look up old acquaintances so that we could meet at the pub on several occasions, people that I would not have known where to start looking for if it weren't for the simplicity offered by the net.

Maybe I'm not representative of the general facebook populace, though. I have a relatively small friend list and my 10 or so closest friends aren't on it. It's basically a list of people I don't talk to regularly, but don't want to lose complete touch with.

I have to agree with you, the thing that this guy doesn't understand is that interaction on facebook leads to real face to face interaction. I've made a lot of good friends through facebook, and reconnected with many many old ones. Hell, I even found a boyfriend on facebook and fell head over heels for him. I also get a lot of party invites that I probably never would have gotten before.

Basically, it's a good tool for people who are not natural social butterflies to come out of their shell and talk to people a bit. If left to my own devices it would just be me and my close knit little group of friends (who are also afraid of people) and we would never make any real progress getting over our social anxiety.

Also, it's really really fun, and a good time waster. It's also a great way to share pictures, quotes, info about new music and movies, and other things with my aformentioned group of friends.

I don't care if it's run by evil capitalists, it's not like I really have any personal information on there anyway. What are they going to do? Scare me with their terrible banner ads? CHUD has those too and I'm not complaining.

If anything, Facebook creeps me out because it will tell me EVERYTHING ALL MY FRIENDS ARE DOING! Thank you, Stalkerbook!
