Magnetic Fields --- Distortion

I'm picking this up after work today. I've heard good things. Any confirmation?

Not yet, but goddamn it, it's about time the Fields came back.

The heavy distortion aspect of...er...Distortion leaves me with a little trepidation but 69 Love Songs is so unrivaled in it's breadth and scope that I can't imagine there's a genre Merritt and friends couldn't make their own. Must get.

Only four songs in so far, but I'm really digging it. Sounds like their pre-69 Love Songs stuff a little, which isn't bad at all. Love Songs is their masterpiece, to be sure, and i was nice but I felt like Merrit really restricted himself in terms of theme and production on that record.

This sounds a lot bigger and a lot more playful. And the production (which, of course, is full of carefully produced distortion) compliments the classical songwriting.

Great lyrics, as always:

"They ain't broke, so they put on airs,
the faux folk sans derrieres.
They breathe coke and they have affairs
with each passing rock star.
They come on like squares
but get off like squirrels.
I hate California girls."

Woo!

Glad you're enjoying it, Parker. Pitchfork was pretty damned pleased as well.

Those are the lyrics Rivers Cuomo would dream of writing - if only he wasn't always dreaming of becoming a complete knob.

Hope the second half delivers.

Overall, a solid album. Big and loud and fun. Not quite worth the long wait from i, but it's good to see them making music again. I'd be interested in hearing this stuff live (since it's nice and loud, and Merrit has hearing issues and prefers quieter performances) but the two local shows scheduled sold out fast enough to make ones head spin.

I guess we're the only two Fields fans on the boards! I find it kinda depressing that most people would rather talk about Scarlett Johansen covering Tom Waits than a new album from a long standing important indie band with one of our generations greatest songwriters. "California Girls" indeed...

I like Magnetic Fields lots, but the album just came out yesterday, I haven't heard it, and I don't want to be one of those "ohmygodican'twaittohearthis!" guys.

Well, why not, dammit? It's not like there's been any quality releases in the past month or anything. Get on the ball, Dave. I need someone to talk to about shit...

Kidding, of course. Although I guess this makes me the "ohmygodcan'twaittotalkaboutit" guy. I guess I figured that usually most people have music months before the actual CD droped and I wondered if anyone had downloaded any leaks or anything. I'm typically behind because I don't role that way.
