'Rent' Closes After 12 Years

Fucking finally.

However, just so people don't think I'm hating on Rent (I liked it in high school when I saw it on a theatre trip. I was the one of the only ones who sat through the thing while all the popular girls in their evening gowns hid out in the bathroom), Larson did create one of those classic Broadway songs with "Seasons of Love." For a guy who wrote an entire show about what you leave behind, that's one for the ages.

So even though there are his contemporaries composing today what he was trying to do, but better, I do wonder what kind of career he would have had.

You weren't a popular girl in high school? HEY-O!

I for one, am hating on Rent:

i hate Rent, thank god it's closing.

End transmission.

I can taste the tears of people who love Rent and therefore suck at life. It's DELICIOUS.

"Seasons of Love" is such schmaltzy crap. It's soulless.
Even though what happened to the guy who created this was tragic. I'm glad another horror of the 90s is finally gone.

Saw it with my ex and we both thought it was fine. No more, no less. Also, the seats we got were too close to one of the speakers by the stage so everything was too loud. Not a pleasant experience.

Observation: Like with Firefly, I think a lot of the hatred for Rent comes not from the show itself, but its obnoxious fanbase. And believe me, I really dislike Rentheads.

However, I would probably not be the musical theatre nerd I am today if not for "Rent." It was the gateway drug for a lot of people my age, and it's definitely one of the more accessible musicals.

I may post more later on why "Seasons of Love" is a great song.

Please do. My hatred for that song knows no bounds, and has nothing to do with the Rentheads because I really haven't encountered all that many of them. It mostly stems from taking a sweepingly beautiful opera like La Boheme and turning it into a musical with uniformly forgettable songs, particularly "Seasons of Love". It's just an excruciatingly cheesy song. I mean, Jesus, look:

525,600 minutes, 525,000 moments so dear.
525,600 minutes - how do you measure, measure a year?
In daylights, in sunsets, in midnights, in cups of coffee.
In inches, in miles, in laughter, in strife.
In 525,600 minutes - how do you measure a year in the life?
How about love?
How about love?
How about love?
Measure in love.
Seasons of love.

That's Up With People level lyrics right there. Really, how can you defend that?

It means a lot to us too.

I tried watching the movie version strictly because of my Rosario love, but I couldn't even make it to the 30 minute point. Just not my thing, and I generally like musicals.
I'm not a Renthead by any means, but if your only experience of this show is the movie, you haven't seen Rent. The movie is not good. The play is excellent, even without the original cast.
I didn't even bother to see the movie, I instead read Nathan Rabin's analysis over at The Onion A.V. Club.

Wait, so what the hell are the unpopular girls in high school going to rally behind now?

And I'll agree with the Firefly/Rent fanbase comparison: god dammit, I hate both those groups.
Perhaps they'll fall back to the good ol' shitty stand-by, GREASE.
Ugh. I'd rather they back Wicked.

Yeah, Wicked has replaced Rent for a while now.

I've seen Rent on stage and thought it was good enough, but not great. Still, everyone here is so hatin' on so many musicals, I'm curious to know what you guys would actually consider good?

Off the top of my head, Sweeney Todd, West Side Story, Candide, Les Mis, Phantom, Man of La Mancha, My Fair Lady, Oliver!, and NOT RENT.
Where does Damn Yankees fit into this?
Man of La Mancha, hands down. But, I'm a fiend for Don Quixote, so it's best to judge it by the tastes of others.

Are we talking strictly stage musicals or film ones as well?

Actually I hate the gibberish that they call "lyrics"

that and the fanbase. I was a *shudder* theatre major in college, so It was hard to escape.

'Allo!

Now, now... let's not throw our Shonberg/Boublil baby out with our Weber bathwater. I like Rent, but it's a pretty lightweight experience stacked up to Les Miserables.

I've never seen a production of Phantom, but I've heard the music, and I can very much do without hearing it ever again.
I much prefer the music to the lyrics in Phantom.

Yeah, leave Les Miz outta this shit.

And another thing: why are we arguing amongst ourselves when there are bigger problems at hand? Problems like Jim Steinman single-handedly killing musical theatre with his Batman musical.
