Resistance 2 (PS3)

Thread Starter
It seems that Sony has started to reveal some of the details for the upcoming Resistance: Fall of Man sequel (coming out Fall 2008 I'd assume). Game Informer has it on the cover for February and is highlighting 60 player online matches and 8 player online co-op (scans of the article here).

PS3Fanboy has some video interviews from GameInformer talking with the Resistance 2 devs and they mention that some enemies in the game will be over 100 ft. tall and that the Co-op, campaign, and on-line multiplayer will all be integrated.

They also seem to indicate that there are going to be different classes you can play as and that they're really going to focus on groups with squads. I don't know if this is going to result in more 'clan'-like online playing where you get groups of 4-8 together and try to compete or what.

With as good as the original Resistance (although punishingly cruel in how many times you die sometimes) and Ratchet & Clank PS3 games are, I've got high hopes for this one. Although there are some other high profile games coming out for the PS3 like Killzone 2, Little Big Planet, MGS4, FFXIII, etc. Until God of War 3 info starts coming out, this is the one is probably at the top of my list.

Aren't they talking about the solo and co-op campaigns being completely different also? That's pretty interesting. The squad-based on-line play for the 60-player matches sounds neat, too. Rather than a ridiculous free-for-all there will be objectives that may or may not be the same objective the other teams have.

I'm looking forward to this one taking place in the US, plus they're getting rid of the annoying British narrator.

I'm going to need to beef up my PSN friends list so I can get in on that 8 player Co-op. Just LOVE that idea.
8 Player co op as incredible as it sounds right away, could also fail pretty bad... I mean that's eight whole people. The challenge balance would have to be amazing etc.
All over this. R: FOM was an exceptionally tight and well-crafted FPS. Everything I've heard about the sequel is tasty.

Yeah, I'm excited to see what they can do. As long as there is Home/In game messaging by the time this comes out, it could be pretty cool. Also, I appreciate that the lack of peer-to-peer networking makes these 60-player online things possible.

The 3 classes sound interesting too and the different objectives for different squads in a huge map sounds really cool too.
I'm really looking forward to this game. I was playing this game exclusively for a while when I first got my PS3. I didn't stop playing it regularly online until about late fall with Warhawk and CoD4. This is one of my most anticipated games other than MGS4.

True, but from what I read, the co-op portion will be a different campaign than single player so it should be better balanced than just making single player into a 8 player co-op. I care more for multiplayer, going from 40 player online to 60 player online is ballsy on their part. To their credit, i liked multiplayer in the first one and it never felt laggy. Taking a little from CoD4 wouldn't be bad either. I think having a class system will be interesting.

I'm hoping the game is set entirely within churches, cathedrals, and other "holy" buildings.

I'm not sure that you need to put "holy" in quotes when referring to non-Christian religions.

We can only hope. If that happens, I see a PS3 purchase in your future (at least before God of War 3).

That might do the trick.

Where the heck is GoW3? Is that even on the horizon? I'll just keep sliding the PS3 purchase off until then (much as I did with my PSP Slim purchase, which was thwarted by the release date shenanigans).

It's definitely in development by the same studio, although the project lead from GoW 2 (Cory Barlog) is not involved. I don't think there's an estimated release date yet, so figure 2009 at the earliest.

Back on topic, I'd say Resistance 2 sounds too ambitious, but Insomniac has its shit together like no other developer. Seriously underrated in their ability to quickly turn out polished AAA games.
This one looks absolutely fucking amazing I cannot wait
post #14 of 130
Apparently the single player campaign is in two distinct segments - one of which will involve heavy squad tactics or something.

This second segment, as an entire game in itself, will comprise the 8-player co-op portion.

There is also talk of dropships and other assorted aircraft making their way to multiplayer.

Killzone? Pah... Insomniac won me over with Ratchet and Clank anyway...

I know Resistance is an "older" PS3 title but anyone still play this online? it's the only PS3 game I own right now and I've never played online before, but I'd like to try it out now. I just completed the single player on normal and loved it.

Yeah, there are still a fair number of people playing it online. I haven't played it recently but I'd assume there are still a fair number of people playing it. It's the PS3's best-selling game.
So, you can get 20 more people calling you a "gay fag". Sign me the fuck up!
You know the player base isn't so bad. Less mics to go around, and less kids can convince the parents to get it.

Yeah there is still a big group that play it. Feel free to add me and I'll jump in the game again. I haven't played it much since I moved on to CoD4 but I can always jump back in again. I may need time to get back in the groove again though.

One of things that has really bugged me about video games in recent years has been how fast sequels are churned out. I mean i just got a ps3 over the holidays and i'm still playing Assasin's Creed, plan on getting Resistance, and feel another game i want will probably have another sequel before to long.

These sequels come out way to fast for casual gamers like myself.

You're complaining that it's only taking 2 years for a sequel to come out? You're lucky if you get 3 games in a series per generation of hardware if that's how frequently they come out.

I think that yeah, a new game in a series every year could be kind of tough but every two seems not that bad.

With the beta getting wider release and the full game coming out in just 2 weeks, time to bring this baby back.

After seeing just a tiny bit of the beta last night, it was immediately obvious that the world of Resistance 2 seemed more alive and vivid. As in the case in many post-apocalyptic games, there's lots of empty space but the lack of destructible anything and complete stillness of things like plants and grass in some areas made it feel much more sterilized.

Anyway, from the first bit in Resistance, the environment felt a lot better and had at least 3 more colors (no longer entirely brown/black/grey/yellow!). I'll be interested to see how the co-op goes since that's the area I'm most interested in (I get sick of getting shot in the face by Bruce Wayne).

Anyway, anyone else on the beta we need to get a party going this weekend in the beta (and once the full game comes out).
I got my beta key and will download sometime today. I'm up for games but I don't have the headset yet so I won't be talking.
Co-op anyone? I'll be playing the beta off and on tonight. Feel free to send me a message if you want to play.
It isn't groundbreaking but the co-op is a lot of fun. This is definitely going on my Christmas wish list.

Yeah, I'm pleasantly surprised at how great this is. I think the feel is just so much better since the original Resistance and it's amazing that this came out less than 2 years later and they put out another game in-between. Insomniac is pretty crazy.

The it's interesting how completely different the co-op seems between a 3 man team and an 8 man team. I keep wanting to level up my soldier so that I can buy my first upgrade. I also like the way you get XP by healing, dispersing ammo, or blocking shots that would have hurt your teammate. Taking the same 8 man squad combat and applying it in a team PvP match would be pretty cool.

I still was having a ton of problems with the invites though. Is everyone else having those kinds of issues?
Had a great time play with you guys. It's definitely improved from the private beta, but still great fun. I was hooked on co-op during the private beta and they made it even better, and harder. Yeah, they need to fix the invite system. I did change a couple of my options so people on my friends list can join me automatically, you might want to look into that nachos. That will at least make it easier to join a friend's party without an invite. A mic will definitely be a must for co-op. Also, the dynamic mission structure is nice, makes each round feel different. I'll be playing a lot of R2 co-op.

Yeah, in-between games I was heading to the other room and trying to find my Bluetooth headset. I just rearranged the furniture and can't find it anywhere for some reason. It definitely hurts when you can't ask for ammo (though the fact that each class tells you who needs what is quite nice) or say thanks when you get saved..

I think I'm probably only buying one game before Christmas and the beta has made me think that R2 might be the game.

What's the deal with grey tech? And how do you get/find it?

Also, did anyone else experience a problem in the post-game lobby where all of your own stats read zero but the stats for everyone else were correct? Everything was recorded correctly since it showed up in my warchest thing but the post-game summary was wrong every time.

I had the same problem with the stats. I have to say, with all the issues in the beta right now it's a good thing they didn't just release it without doing a beta.

By the way, the game has a site, beta.myresistance.net that tracks all your stats. I logged in there last night and it looked like it had all my stats on there correctly.

You get some grey tech after you take down the various big boss chimera in each area.

Yeah, it seems like you'd have no problem getting the grey tech to buy the upgrades (since in just my limited amount of playing I've picked up almost 75 units of gray tech) if you're grinding to get the experience.

Once I can buy an upgrade for the soldier class, I'm wondering what I'd pick ... increased ammo is probably the way to go but faster reloads would definitely be nice as well.

Also, I unlocked a second perk or whatever they're called and now I can detonate myself. I'm not sure exactly how beneficial that is though.
IGN says 9.5.

Seems to be the first review according to metacritic, which has been rather amusing bombarded by user scores of 1 to try and get the score as low as possible.

It's going on the queue, it's obviously doing something right to justify these scores - not the biggest fan of the original, but the thing is certainly well-carved.

I'm a monster with a shotgun. Ask Bruce.

Do not fuck with Buff and his shotty.

I've settled on this being the one game I'm buying at full price. Everything else: Fallout 3, LBP, RB2, L4D, GoW2, etc. are all going to get rented or bought used/on sale but Resistance 2 is getting picked up day one.

Compared to the minigun though, that shotgun is a bag of crap.

Voted, then bought Resistance 2 today. Single player has been fun so far. I love the marksman and the auger. Feel free to message me if you want to play some co-op.

I so desperately want to pick this up right now ... unfortunately I'm completely swamped until the weekend. I'll probably be picking up a new Bluetooth headset (the official Sony one maybe?) with it as well so I don't sit there mute the whole time.
I shall be there to destroy you soon, Nachos.

Be patient. I have to pick up CoD5 and LBP first. But when the time comes, you shall meet a terrible, horrible, exploding fate.

Alternatively, a spot of co-op could be called for!
Saw this in Blockbuster and rented it. Obama is the president of the United States and Resistance 2! Hurray!

Impressions to follow.

I just picked this and a new Bluetooth headset up at lunch today. I'll definitely be playing this weekend. I I'll just be doing co-op though.
I'm gonna try and pick this up from Blockbuster later today.
On a related note, I guess the official rental period is 5 days but anyone know how long you can keep a BB game rental checked out before they start charging extra fees/charge you the full price of the game or whatever?
Thread Starter
You have a 7 day grace period with no late fee. After that extra week they charge you the full price of the game. If you return it before 30 days they'll refund you that entire amount back except $1.50 (or around that ... differs by store).
Ok, thanks nachos.
Thread Starter
Yeah, if you don't mind getting charged/refunded Blockbuster game rentals usually work out to being cheaper than joining GameFly. Just make sure you return it by 30 days after you rented it or you'll own it!
I beat the game earlier this week so I'll be down to play some co-op or competitive multiplayer this weekend.
