Nachos, Bruce. Feel free to join.

I don't know if I even want to go back to the single player campaign after this. It's just so fucking boring and standard for a shooter. But taking down that big fucker with a whole team- man, that's fun as hell.
Well, I'm bummed that I sold my copy so fast then. I enjoyed the campaign, but even on Hard it was way too easy. The final boss was a joke. However, like in the first one, I loved all the various weapons and bad guys. I just wish it was a little longer and a little tougher.

The single player genuinely is terrible. The co-op not only beats it, but grows on you rapidly after you cleanse the palette of CoD's engine. Playing it in the mindset of the ol' UT and Quake mods where they'd throw waves of monsters at you and you just beat the crap out of them... it's great fun.

Good to play with you guys online at something finally too. You fight like angry bears.

Sadly my network is being bitchy so I can't play too much right now but yeah, taking down the huge guys is a bunch of fun although I actually prefer the giant hordes.
Really fun with a friend by your side, playing co-op online. I'm a little worried that I'm already getting tired of the experience, though. Half the time I end up teamed with douches that go charging straight ahead to soak up all the XP and leave their teams behind.

Online's definitely where it's at, though. When it works.
Alex - it was only because I felt you guys weren't getting your hands dirty enough - I was leading by example! ;-)

It's far more amusing multiplayer, but I fear it's going back this week. I just can't see me playing it long-term like CoD.
Agreed, same here. I'll play a few more days though, if anyone's up for a game. But the co-op's already getting a little stale.
I would, but CoD5's luring me in for some zombie action. Since you've picked up a PS3 what 'older' titles you thinking of getting in the sales then? Curious to see if i'll be seeing you on any I still play.
I'm making every effort to try and enjoy the campaign, but it's obvious the developers are sucking the fun out of the game. Between Idaho and Chicago, I've become completely frustrated with the trial and error of the firefights.
Anyone up for some online action?

I would be if I weren't out of town all this week. Maybe once my brother gets in town we'll be up for some online co-op. I really wish the split screen would let you log in as two separate PSN id's though, I hate to think that any levels/progress P2 makes is lost.
Playing right now. Could be your last chance to play with me! Send me a message if you're down.
I'm glad this game exists. Because of this game, I now understand how it would be to be a blind video game enthusiast.

Seriously, how did this game get released without anyone noticing how it's IMPOSSIBLE to see anything in any indoor locale and most of the outdoor locales? Were all the QA guys playing on TVs with super fucked up brightness settings or what.

Otherwise, it's a fun game. I'm not really following the story though. Apparently the floaty blob guy with the tentacles was the hero from the first game? And that's what I'm turning into now? I thought I was turning into a regular alien guy.

No, you're actually the same guy from the first game.

From a Wiki entry on the series:

Quote:
The main character of Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2 is Nathan Hale, a human that has been partially affected by the Chimeran virus that gives him regenerative abilities but has not completely taken over his body. It is revealed in Resistance 2 that Hale participated in an American experiment named Project Abraham. The Americans tested the chimeran virus on human subjects, and tried to inhibit the virus in some way. Hale however, was tested with a different strain originating from what Dr. Malikov describes as Ancient Chimera. They are more than 60 million years old.

The Chimera are much stronger than regular humans, and have between two and six yellow eyes. The Chimeran metabolism is said to be roughly twelve times that of humans', which allows for extraordinary healing abilities, but it also causes their bodies to overheat quickly. For that reason, Chimeran soldiers have cooling devices implanted into their backs. The Chimera thrive in very cold temperatures, which has led them to alter the Earth's climate through unknown means, reducing temperatures to the point where London is frozen over in July. The Chimera are led by creatures called Angels (large, flying monsters with multiple limbs emanating from their backs and extending toward the front around their heads) which possess a telepathic link to the Chimeran soldiers. Individual Chimera die without this psychic link. It is said in several intelligence reports during the game that the Chimera will devour their own kind, usually their wounded or dead.

In Resistance: Fall of Man it is revealed that the angels take shelter in areas known as Chimeran towers which are massive spire like structures that are often hundreds of feet tall. In the Resistance: Fall of Man Level "A mysterious discovery" it turns out that the towers are excavated rather than constructed as was originally believed. This suggests that the Chimera were on earth before humans. This turns out to be true when in Resistance 2 it is revealed that the towers were on earth several million years ago. Apparently something radical happened in the Gulf of Mexico, which incapacitated all the towers that are scattered around the world. It is presumed that the Chicxulub event is linked to this due to a mysterious object being described by intel in the second game and the location in the Gulf.

In Resistance 2 a Chimera known as Daedalus, which originated from the very same experiment as Nathan Hale, takes control of the Chimeran forces world wide after the surprise Chimeran attack on station Igloo. It is speculated that because he is supposed to be an older form of Chimera that he has more precise control over the Chimera than the Angels. It is revealed in several intelligence documents and mission briefings that the Chimeran command structure became more and more complex since the arrival of Daedalus and that the Chimeran offensive strategy has also become more tactical.
Really, the only reason I love this game as much as I do is that the multiplayer hooked me. It does tend to be a little too hard to make things out sometimes (but this was also an issue in R:FoM). I'd assume that it is probably quasi intentional. I'll be interested to see if they make a third one given the sales of R2 and the strange ending of this one.

What's the trick to getting a ridiculous amount of XP in the co-op game? Even when I start at the beginning of the mission and play as a soldier I never seem to get into the 10K+ XP range. Meanwhile, almost everyone else is getting 40K XP a match.

Are you on a standard definition TV or HD? I've noticed a lot of games that are often too dark for standard. That, or the HUD or text are a pain in the ass to read. You would think someone would playtest the games on both.

What level is your soldier? There are a couple things that help you get a ton of XP. One is that as you get higher level you can hold more ammo so you can shoot more stuff, the other is that as a soldier you eventually get a berzerk that makes it so that anyone who shoots at you their bullets bounce back and hit them. That's the one that will probably get you the most experience. Then at close to 30 you get a rocket launcher which lets you take out massive groups of guys with a single shot.

I've found that with the rocket launcher, reflective shield, and a knowledge of the level it can be hard not to get a massive amount of XP on a level.

It's a Samsung HDTV.

I have noticed the text thing on SDTV, though. The HUD in Guitar Hero World Tour was almost unreadable before I switched to a HD set.

nachos, I'm only level five or six so that's probably the deal. I focused on single player for a while so I'm at low levels for all the co-op classes. I'll just keep with it. Is the reflective shield the one that's all sparkly?

No, the red one that's sparkly is what you look like when you activate the one that only gets you half damage. I think the reflective shield looks pretty normal. I think it also makes it so you get most of the aggro so more guys shoot at you.

From a co-op guide wiki:

Quote:
* Ironheart - reduces enemy damage by half. Available at level 1.
* Overload - a suicide bomb that will kill nearby enemies. Requires level 4.
* Backlash - causes enemies to attack the soldier. Any damage absorbed by shields during this time will reflect back to the enemy. Requires level 12.

If you are low ranked, try the medic class, you get a lot of xp healing everyone. Your medic will rank up quickly.

I have to get into co-op again. I stopped a couple weeks ago when Killzone 2 came out and I have to go back and finish maxing out my spec ops. I also need to play more competitive multiplayer.

Woo! DLC finally announced!

Quote:
Resistance 2's first batch of DLC is coming soon, with details already spilling out of GDC. Insomniac has revealed the lineup in a video with Gamespot, which you can see after the break. The new content is split into two pieces: a patch (v1.50); and paid content from the PSN Store. Both will arrive on Thursday, March 26.

The patch will add a new multiplayer mode -- Meltdown -- as well as a new difficulty setting for co-op play. This will give higher EXP rewards, but will be much more challenging. Finally, the patch will also allow a local co-op player to sign in with his PSN profile, saving his accumulated scores.

As for the paid content, there are a number of maps being released which have been designed to allow more intimate, small scale battles. The Aftermath map pack will cost you $5.99. There are also a number of skins which will be purchasable for $0.99 each. For more details and footage of the maps, check the video after the break.
It isn't clear to me how much co-op stuff there is in the Map pack but the 1.5 patch with a new co-op difficulty level definitely sounds interesting. This will probably get me back in the game this weekend. If anyone wants to play some I'd be willing to play pretty much any class, fair warning though: I suck at spec ops.

ETA: Apparently the maps are vs. only ... no co-op. That sucks. I'd have gladly bought them if they even gave me just one new co-op level to play. Ah well, maybe they'll come out with new co-op levels eventually. The new difficulty is enough to get me to play some more.
Count me in this weekend nachos, I'll be the spec ops. I'm at level 25 I think so I'm close to maxing him out.
I'd be down also. I'm still working for the "get all the co-op intel" trophy and am lightyears from maxing out any co-op character.

Well, the new difficulty level will get you more XP so hopefully we can level up some people a little bit faster. No one besides my soldier is that high either.

As for getting all the intel, I've found the easiest way it to join games already in session. You didn't used to need to complete the whole level to get the intel. So you can easily cut the time it takes in half by joining in-progress games. You can also then specifically look for the level you want to get intel for. I spent one day around Christmas just finishing collecting all the intel that way.
Yeah, that's what I've been doing and it works pretty well. Once in a while I'll get in a match that's so close to being over that I don't even make it to the battlefield. I do wish that when you join a game it would spawn you closer to the fight. I get turned around quite easily on some of the maps and wander for five minutes at a time, even using the checkpoint markers.

Yeah, worse yet is if you accidentally go through the wrong door sometimes you can get sealed in an area that you can't get out of. It can be really frustrating. The Holar Tower level is particularly bad for that kind of thing ... it was the level I saw glitch the most as well. That was definitely the level that took me the longest to get all the intel for.

For leveling up, I found I played Axbridge and Orick a bunch since there seem to be a ton of guys to kill on those levels and minimal getting lost or left behind.
Ok, picked this up yesterday and it's about ten times more fun than Killzone 2. Seriously.
I've had this for awhile. Maybe I need to give it a spin.

There are about 1-billion posts on the MB where I talk about how much I love the co-op (the single player was interesting but not amazing and I don't really play competitive) but the lack of DLC for co-op has really frustrated me. All it takes is a few new scenarios or levels or something and I'd be playing it again. I was absolutely hooked on it.

But with the co-op in in Uncharted 2, Borderlands, Modern Warfare 2, and Army of Two: The 40th Day I won't really be missing it anymore come fall.
The co-op was a load of fun but the single player was mired in dark environments and sometimes confusing level checkpoints/objectives.

Actually, the co-op sometimes had the same problem if you joined a mission already in progress. There were lots of times where I'd earn plenty of XP but never even see the team before the mission ended.

I'd be up for revisiting co-op if some chewers were up for it.
