Ok, I officially love this game's co-op. It really is a blast when you've got a good group.

A negative if I have to go there is that it does kind of suck how right before a game some people will drop out sometimes it's your only medic or spec ops guy. Also, automatic ranked matching will just pick your level in any class (my medic is level 1 because I don't really enjoy playing it) so even if I switch to a different class, I'm often playing with pretty crappy people because it matched me with other level 1 players.

I also wish they made it easier for a good co-op group to 'party up' like in Halo 3 though. Sometimes stuff is just clicking and you wish you could just do another level with the same guys. Still, I'm really enjoying the co-op and am hoping it'll get me trained up for doing better in the single player once I eventually do switch over to the main campaign.

Throw my name in for some multi this weekend. PSN ID is awacs_cat.

God knows when my Blockbuster is going to get this in for rent (I'd buy the damn thing but I can't really justify it having recently spent $120 on Silent Hill and Dead Space)

So is the single player experience better than part 1? I loved the period/sci-fi/war feel of the first game.

I don't know about the single player experience yet actually. I've played only the co-op this past weekend (logging in the most time I've played pretty much any game since Guitar Hero). I haven't heard amazing superlatives about the single player campaign but there weren't many for Halo 3's either and I enjoyed that well enough.

I will say that I'm amazed by how well the massive amount of on-screen activities in an online co-op is handled. I've seen rooms with just tons of enemies, 8 players, and just massive stuff going on and not even a hint of slowdown. The graphics aren't the most intricate you'll see, but they are rock solid.

That being said, the current beta.myresistance.net and some of the servers have been a little disappointing. Some stats just don't make sense and there is no explanation of what the different things mean. They really should have hired a better team to flesh it out more if it's going to be considered in the same realm as bungie.net.

I beat the single player game, for the second time, on Superhuman last night. I like the new weapons, but I do miss some of the wild weapons from the first game. I like the improvements to the Auger though, and the splicer is a fun weapon. The Bullseye Mark II is also available for most of the game as well, instead of just the last level like in the first game.

The game still has the "period/sci-fi/war feel" of the first game, but now you have a game that takes place in American locations. The game is shorter this time, I thought it was easier as well, and I played my first play through on difficult (the hardest setting available at first till you unlock superhuman). I enjoyed the single player, but I think the co-op is where the most fun is going to be had. I played with nachos this weekend and had a great time.
Single player is kind of weak. You realize quickly that you're not defending a living breathing America... I can't remember one NPC civilian in the game, if you ask me America is already dead.
I just got through the Kraken and holy crap that was awesome. Now that's a pretty shit hot boss fight.

So I still haven't played any single player but I am quite enjoying the co-op. The abilities and upgrades you unlock as you level up really are quite good. It plays almost completely different at level 25 than it does at level 1.

I've also had some time to play all three classes, soldier being my best and spec ops being my worst. They all have their strengths and weaknesses but they also each provide a very different experience. Once I've maxed out my soldier's levels, I don't think I'll have any trouble playing through with the medic as well.

Eventually I'll have to play the single player campaign or competitive multiplayer but for right now, even with co-op only this is the most I've played a game in quite some time.

I'm still waiting on my copy from Lovefilm. I can't justify buying it knowing how lukewarm I felt about the original, especially since i'm in the middle of a gaming sandwich right now.

I'm telling you, the online co-op is a blast though. I've already put upwards of 30 hours just into that and I haven't even maxed my one character yet.

I've kind of decided that R2 is going to be where I get my first Platinum trophy. I'm basically going to try to get every Ribbon/Medal/Trophy that can be had in the game. I figure it's a good way to keep myself from needing to buy new games and I do really enjoy playing it.

I just really hope that at some point they come out with new stuff for online co-op via DLC. I love it but know basically every scenario by heart at this point.
It's not that I don't believe you - I love CoDWaW's co-op to pieces and even then, right now - that's getting little attention due to all the other stuff.

Stupid xmas season.

You'll be getting destroyed soon enough, Nachos. Don't be too eager for me to bring on the pain
post #62 of 130

Yeah, I guess I feel like it's a shame that R2 isn't getting more attention. It's a great game that for some reason is getting ignored by a lot of people. I am not a fan of WWII shooters though (and wasn't even a huge fan of CoD4) so I guess I'm just not the typical gamer.

I love that I can go online and play with a group of people and not have to worry about someone shooting me in the face. At some point I'll switch to standard multiplayer and it will be getting shot again but for now I really enjoy the 'us vs. them' gameplay.

That said, I basically made the decision not to buy any other games that I wanted like LBP, Fallout 3, Fable II, Left 4 Dead and just play R2. If I had bought those other games I'd probably just be sitting around not able to decide what I want to play and end up watching TV instead.
It's a smart move. Since my transfer to renting almost all games, i've been literally saturated in them. I think it might even be hindering my enjoyment - giving less time to each title since I know I can pick and choose whatever.

R2 is selling well enough, I think it's just something that'll pick up more after christmas when people get given it.
Hopefully, I'll be back on R2 soon. I miss playing co-op. I have all my classes around rank 10 so far, if I recall. I want to get some more competitive multiplayer in too. I've only played a few rounds of it because co-op had me hooked.
How many players does multiplayer support? Didn't the first one have some insane number? 50-60, or something like that.
Thread Starter
The 'competitive' multiplayer (standard deathmatch and other player vs. player modes) supports up to 60 players. The online multiplayer co-op supports up to 8 players and are not really related to the main campaign. The main story campaign is single-player only.

Yeah Bruce, miss having you around. Hopefully you'll get your PS3 back in not too long.

Since I'm the only one playing this I figure I'll give an update, I made it to level 30 in co-op with my soldier. The guy is badass and I have a hard time not accidentally getting the most XP in any round.

Since I'm waiting for my brother to pick up the game before I play co-op with the other classes I've started working through the single player campaign. I've only made it to Orick at the moment (3rd location in the game) and am generally enjoying it.

I miss being able to carry all the weapons you wanted from the first game though. Having to decide between carrying the Bullseye and Carbine with a ton of ammo or either Bullseye/Carbine and a sniper rifle or rocket launcher can be tough. The Marksman sort of resolves this but at least as far as I've played, finding ammo for it can be tough (which generally means you end up using the Carbine or Bullseye).

The graphics have been pretty good but not amazing, I guess we're waiting for Killzone 2 for those. There are a number of guys who will cheap one-hit kill you (Chameleons and Furies and the Furies are in the water and can't even be shot) which can be kind of frustrating. I don't know how much fun I'll have playing through on the next higher difficulty.

As for the competitive multiplayer, I kind of suck right now. I don't know the maps, don't really know the tweaked versions of the weapons, and don't generally play these type of games much (last time I got into it was over a year ago when Halo 3 came out). But it's pretty good and at least it's nice to know that without getting that many kills I'm still earning XP and working towards getting some nice rewards.

Anyway, can't recommend this game enough if you enjoy a decent FPS and want to get some interesting online multiplayer and entertaining single-player and don't want to be playing CoD.
You should come play some CoD. Stop trying to go against the grain with your crazy ways, join us!

Well, I had CoD4 for 360 and just never got around to playing the online much and ended up trading it in for the same price I paid for it to get MGS4. Co-op is really the thing I love playing most in videogames though (and preferably not against other people who will just shoot me in the face). If Call of Duty had a co-op mode I'd consider it a lot more (although not World at War ... I just don't enjoy WW2 weapons for some reason).

The co-op is actually what makes me like the hardcore military shooters like GRAW. Single player bores me but when it's me and a friend against the CPU it's just a ton of fun.
I don't understand this term "360".

Still, the co-op in WaW is seriously worth a glace, even just as a rental. Resistance is something me and my work colleagues are thinking of moving over to since WaW hasn't quite captured us as much as CoD4, but it won't be till after xmas - in the run up to Killzone 2, which I suspect we'll once again destroy shit on.

Yeah, I think KZ2 will probably be my next purchase (well unless Fallout 3 or Left 4 Dead tempt me too much).
I was looking at some Killzone 2 videos, and it looks great. I haven't played the first one, so I don't know anything about it. Is it a game that you can only play online with, ala Warhawk, or is it similar to COD or what other FPS is it like?
Thread Starter
Well, as we get closer to release we'll probably start a Killzone 2 thread (if there isn't one already) but it's both single player and multiplayer. I'm not sure if there is co-op or not but there is definitely a fairly large single player campaign and pretty good online system as well. The online allows you to mix and match classes and level up in them and pick what abilities you want (I think basically you get a major class and a minor class and certain abilities are only available for the main class).

The single player is your typical FPS war campaign. As I understand it in Killzone 1, Earth was attacked by this alien planet and these guys called the Helghast. At the end, you manage to fend them off but now in Killzone 2 you're going to their planet and taking them on or something like that.
Whenever I boot the game up it says "game data corrupted", ive deleted the game files, however, any new game I play and save has the same problem. Any thoughts on whats the problem, its becoming very frustrating.
Co-op. Today or tonight. Who's down?

Handle- "Jugpuncher"
I might be able to drag myself off Fallout 3 to aid you in the destruction of scum, Alex.

When you going to be on? I'm still not entirely sure when most Chewers play games, let alone what time that translates to over here.
Got nothing to do today but some writing, so I'll be available pretty much whenever. I won't know what the hell I'm doing, however- haven't played co-op at all, and just started the regular campaign.

Oh, and no headset either...
I'm always down for some co-op. I'll be on later, feel free to send an invite and I'll join you.

I can probably play a bit tonight. I've got to do some stuff to get ready for my trip home for the holidays but I'll be around later.

Here are the key points:

Class: Soldier
Primary Weapon: Chain gun
Primary Benefit: Alternate Fire is a shield that protects friendlies from gunfire/missiles/grenades (not melee though)
Negatives: Moves really slow while firing, constantly needs healing and ammo

Class: Medic
Primary weapon: Phoenix (absorbs enemies health and gives it to you refills alternate fire)
Primary benefit: Alternate fire shoots out a blast that will heal everyone in the area of where it impacts some.
Negatives: Doesn't do too much damage and dies easily

Class: Spec Ops
Primary Weapon: Scoped battle rifle
Primary benefit: Instead of grenades, throws out ammo kits
Negatives: No health, no grenades

Basically you earn XP one of three ways, either by doing damage (with a bonus for kills), achieving objectives, or using the classes primary benefit. Soldiers get XP for blocking shots, spec ops for throwing out ammo, medics for healing.

If you don't have at least one of each class you're probably screwed, although a medic and any other class can slowly make their way through levels.

As you level up you unlock which alternate weapon you can carry around and upgrades for your class like how much ammo you can hold, how fast your stuff recharges, what kinds of grenades you can carry, how good your armor is, different 'berzerks', etc. Besides that, just get on there and kill swarms of guys.

ETA:
Each level has different little text things they'll show you at the beginning. If you successfully finish a level (even if you join it mid game) you get credit for having collected that intel. To be able to create a game using a particular level you have to collect all the intel, beat it a certain number of times, and collect a certain amount of gray tech. Gray tech is required for buying some upgrades but I've never had a situation where I didn't have enough gray tech at a particular point to buy the upgrade.

If you're a low level avoid playing with guys who have tons of upgrades (as visible by things on their spines, face masks, ridiculous clothing and things like that). They'll end up getting the kills and XP without even trying. When I play my maxed out soldier I almost feel bad about how much he dominates.

Oh, and most importantly, don't press ANY buttons until everything is dead.
Yes, listen to nachos. Don't push any switches till an area is clear.

Also, just wanted to add, the Spec Ops deal the most damage, which helps balance out the no grenades and little health (it's the class I tend to play the most, although I hate not having grenades).
Cool. Thanks for the info. I'm a good shot so hopefully I'll be an asset. I guess I'll see what you guys are playing as and fill in any spots.
I've grown quite fond of being medic, I found the Spec Ops to be pretty tough to use in the massive firefights that usually break out.
See, it's saying here you're online - but the account doesn't exist. You playing the single player?
Yep. Want to play now?
I think I can make time for unleashing some pain before the missus gets back. Let's do it.
It's still saying your account doesn't exist?

EDIT: Fuck typing using the PSN keyboard. I need to get a USB one plugged in.
Bizarre. I can't join up with your game, and can't invite you, apparently.
I'm doing an old fashioned restart, but the entire invite and lobby system to R2 is pretty unfriendly (sorry Nachos).

Will try again, perhaps it's just being flaky to prove a point.

EDIT: The account error's gone now. That's a good sign.
I have no idea what the hell's going on and can't really hear you. Damn you PS3!
It's all a bit Belgian. If you press triangle it brings up your invite menu. Press... R1 or something to switch to the friends list.

Find me on it (it shows offline people too. Hooray) and select "join party".

I'll do the rest.
We did it! Man, I wish I had a headset. Someone buy me Warhawk.

haha! they changed my custom controls! that sucked.
SOCOM comes with it too - I think it's dirt cheap and it's the official new one.

We died too quick.
Now I can't create another custom game. The hell?

hahaha and then it works and then game-killing network error. Glorious.
It's a good thing the PS3 plays blu-rays or I could see you going slightly mad right now with that network error.
Ok dude, so pressing triangle brings up your party list. Press R1 to get a list of friends up. Find me, press X and select "join".

It's the only thing it does better than CoD.
Wasn't working for me. I'd hear your mic for a split second and then a message would come up saying that I didn't have permission.
I eagerly await Alex's comparison of the XBL and PSN online experiences.
You guys need to fix your party options so I can join you guys.

I suggest the headset that comes with SOCOM.
Holy shit that was... awesome.

This is nothing to do with the PSN really - CoD works fine. Resistance 2's multiplayer is just a mess to organise.
