Bionic Commando Rearms - Page 3

Great review, Alex! (Im getting that soundtrack ASAP now!)
Also, here's a tip, Capcom: Give Grin control over the "Strider" and "Ghouls 'n Ghosts" licenses, NOW!

Metal Slug 3 was not a bad investment. Don't feel bad.

It's a good thing it controls well, because the game's super difficult, just like it should be. It's the kind of difficulty that Ninja Gaiden brought back, the kind that you see so rarely these days that makes you feel like it's your fault. Even so, it's still much easier than the original game. Gamers these days, we've turned into a race of wusses with our infinite continues and whatnot.
[rant] Or we've turned into a race of grown-ups with jobs and mortgages who don't find the risk/reward curves for super-difficult twitch-fests quite as appealing or entertaining as we did in our obsessive-compulsive youth. [/rant]

It's ok to admit you're a wuss, Jacob. You're among friends here.

Let it out.

Group hug.

(I do jest, I appreciate this generation's adults are last generation's kid gamers)

I feel the same way as Singer (although there was no way he was a kid when Bionic Commando came out) about not liking frustratingly hard games anymore. Once it starts to feel like work, I sit there and think to myself, "If I wanted to do work, I'd just put in some overtime that may actually help me in real life."

Yes it was! You could get the Metal Slug collection for just a few bucks more, which comes with every game in the series.

And Singer, I get that- but I really feel like it's indicative of everything with this "youtube generation" where we need quick and fast fixes of whatever's new. Quality be damned... we want to play the latest shit and beat it in time to play the game that comes out next week. I'm as guilty of it as anyone...

Hey, I'll be the first to admit I suck at twitch gaming. I was a little too old (even then) for the Mario set when platformers became huge.

Also a good point.

Ah, i avoided that bad investment myself.
*Looks at his PS2 "Metal Slug Anthology"*
Well, maybe MS7 will get a Live port.

Got it last night. Was able to sneak in some play this morning before work.
Fuck this game is difficult. I can't tell you how hard it is to swing using a fucking keyboard.
I'm sold. You guys make this sound just too damn great. And I sadly never beat it on NES, even though it was one of my absolute favorite games. The damn trailer in your review Alex, the music gave me chills.

Man, get a game pad of some kind. I tried playing through Super Metroid with the keyboard, and it never worked properly. You can get a dongle to plug a PS2 controller into your computer via USB.
Or an XBox 360 controller (not the wireless) is a good choice as well since it's already made for USB ports.

I've got my arcade/NES/SNES/Genesis/GBA emulators all synced up with it. Good times.

I snagged the game for the PS3 when it came out and I just went and got the soundtrack off of iTunes. I had the option to choose the system to get the game on and I went with the PS3 because of the d-pad stuff, but the soundtrack will start to populate my 360 this weekend... it will be a glorious custom soundtrack indeed. Thanks for the heads up earlier in the thread about checking iTunes... I probably never would have thought to check there.

The D-pad is not really an issue, since the game works fine with the analog stick. It's made for it, so why wouldn't you use it? Strange that some people are compelled to use the d-pad. Although it's no question that the PS3 beats the 360 in that regard.
On the PS3, the analog sticks seem to have a slightly larger diameter/looser feel so using them for playing the game doesn't seem to work as well as using the D-pad.

On the 360 (at least the demo I played of it) I had no issue using the analog stick for movement/grappling.
i don't like the dpad on the xbox. i'm so used to smashed my thumb into the corner rather then it be so sensitive it makes diagonal grapples harder

this game is still crack. i think my family is gonna have to put me on intervention to get me off of this game
post #118 of 140
The game plays fine on the 360 with the analog stick, I don't think you need to bother with the d-pad at all. Some players might have the NES version ingrained in their head, that it's a game that should be played with a d-pad. But I first played Bionic Commando in the arcades, with a joystick. Really, whatever control method works for you, there's no excuse not to play this game. Easily one of the best available on XBLA.

This might explain why I didn't find it particularly responsive and didn't buy it. I'll give it a retry with the d-pad.
I had to use the D-Pad to play the little hack game though, made it a LOT easier.
I'm still stuck on the Docks level. Fuck swinging is hard.
The Docks Area is a giant pain in the ass, until you learn how to swing. However, after clearing it, you feel like an expert at the game.
How the flying fuck do I beat the MAMA machine? I am about to flip out at that damn thing.
Which one is that one?
I finished the game last week. Such an awesome game.

Now i'm trying to do all the swing challenges. Some of them are eating my soul.
It's the boss at the top of the construction site. The one that launches the grenades and has the big tractor-like wheel.

And, yes, some of those challenge rooms are tough as hell.
There is a weak link on the traction wheels. You have to make it move to the position were you can hit it.
once you take out the wheels you can unscrew the bolts and remove the armor plating. Unscrewing the bolts is where I got stuck. Just shoot the little nub things on the front with the arm.
Thanks! That's what I needed to know (what to do after I shot up the traction wheel).

5 bucks on Xbox 360 right now. Buy it, you heathens.
It's also $5 on PSN.
The PS3 version of this will be getting patched for trophies soon. It'll be nice to have an excuse to play through it again.

Also, they're tweaking the easy and normal modes on 360 and PS3 versions to make it easier for you guys who can't stop dying. Basically you now don't have 'lives' and if you die you respawn on the last platform you fell off of. Supposedly they're also changing the arm length a bit and doing some other tweaks.

Quote:
* If you die, you will respawn at the last solid ground you stood on, or the last checkpoint.
  • Say it with me now….”Unlimited Lives”
  • If you hook to a point and you realize that your line is too short to get you where you need to go, you can hit a button and reel your line out.
  • If you swing into a wall while still hooked, you will no longer bounce off of the wall, disconnect, and hopelessly fall do your spikey death. Instead, you will bounce off of the wall, stay connected, and reel in.

For all difficulties, we also fixed a small bug with the Super Joe Machine Gun. When upgraded, it will not only have a larger clip, but also deal more damage.
Well, that will mark the first time I've ever beaten a game that was apparently so hard they had to reduce the difficulty in a patch.

Granted, it was only because I beat the original about 200 times when I was twelve years old, but I'll take what I can get.

Ninja Gaiden sorta did the same thing with Ninja Gaiden Black, and its Ninja Dog difficulty. It's pretty funny.

The only thing I couldn't beat in Rearmed was some of the challenges, which were pretty damn ridiculous. You have to be hardcore to get through all of those.

I was always curious to try out the Ninja Dog difficulty, just because I heard it was kind of funny, but if I ever do another play through, I'd rather play harder than easier.

And yeah, some of those challenges in Bionic Commando are insane. I started out thinking "these aren't so bad," and ended up confused about how some of them were even possible.

Hell yes, the first BC:R was fantastic..good to see its getting a deserved sequel.
I see all the wusses got their jump button....back in my day, we managed just fine without those, you rotten kids.
JUMP!

I can already see myself getting pissed timing jump-arm movements.
I just replayed the original Rearmed the other day and despite LOVING the NES game and beating it numerous times without a jump, I really started to find it frustrating not having that. I'm definitely planning on picking it up (assuming no really bad reviews).

I'm actually glad to see that 2D platformers continue their comeback ... even if only as downloadable titles.
This pretty much came out of nowhere for me. So YAY!
Great surprise. Looks fantastic.

Yeah, we definitely need more of these. Between Bionic Commando and Shadow Complex, XBox Live is the place for old school games.
