Bionic Commando Rearms - Page 2

So this comes out tomorrow. I absolutely cannot friggin wait. Unfortunately the PSN version doesn't come out until Thursday but I guess that's the price I have to pay for the use of a better d-pad.
I was planning on getting it for PS3, but after buying a new $20 card (in addition to the $5 I already had sitting around) to buy Braid on XBLA, I've got $10 in credit just sitting there.

Should I let MS sit there and collect interest on all that cash or should I buy it for the console I'd rather play it on?

ETA: Do you actually use the D-pad or is it all analog stick?
You can use either the stick or the pad, but to me playing a 2D side scroller with a thumbstick just feels plain wrong to me. And according to IGN's review, the d-pad on the 360 is pretty wonky for this game.
Look, I'm all for trying to keep the feel of a classic game intact, but if the game you're updating had shitty controls, please update them. Just awful controls on the 360.
I downloaded the demo for the PS3 version (the Japanese PSN has it up already) and I really like it. The controls take a little getting used to but it's pretty cool in the 1/2 section of the first level you can play in the demo.

I'm looking forward to that point where I master the arm again and am swinging around like an asshole just landing on enemies' heads and shooting them in the face.

Being able to pick up the barrels is kind of weird and I'm not sure how I feel about them redoing all of the bosses. We'll have to see how it goes with the full game though. Psyched for tomorrow.

Never played the original so I gotta say that the fact there is no jump button is really irritating. But the game looks real nice and the demo is pretty fun so I think it's a purchase for me.

For some reason, every time I read someone saying this, it makes the old-school gamer in me smile.

So I take it that you couldn't jump in the original? I'm 26 years old, so I think I'm a semi old-school gamer. Although I really didn't start paying attention to games until the Sega/Super Nintendo years.
Yeah, I'm not much your senior but I used to own this game on my NES and that was always the thing. To make you play it with the arm, they removed the ability to jump.

It's really an interesting progression because you start by being pissed at it all the time but after a bit it becomes a lot easier to do without thinking and then suddenly you realize that you're swinging all over the place.

Some of the later levels have tons of swinging and can be a blast.
I'm having a lot of fun with it so far. I can't wait to get my swinging skills back. The graphics are rather good too. They also give you a code to be able to wear the original uniform too.
Just got a bit of time in with the 360 version last night. Very nice update to the classic game. The Challenge Mode is a nice inclusion, so plenty of leaderboards, if you're into that kind of thing. Basic and Advanced tutorial levels give you a good opportunity to to get comfortable with the bionic arm. I think it plays well with the analog stick, I've not even bothered with the d-pad.
Pretty much any other XBLA/PSN game that is released from here on out is going to have a hell of a time matching the value and quality that this game presents. Holy crap.
The most frustrating controls on this for me is actually on the map screen, trying to get the helicopter to go where I want it to. That's my only complaint so far, I've played through to level 11 so far and I'm loving it. Got way further than I ever did on the original.
Played the demo and found I liked it about as much as the original. That is to say, not much at all.

I agree, since Im loving the hell out of this game (and the fond memories of the original); only complain is the splash damage from your own weapons, I guess...that did not happen in the original.
Only bad point i can give to this one is that it raises my hopes for a "Strider" remake or Konami giving us "Castlevania: Rondo of Bllod"; how could those not be awesome on PSN/Live?
Shit, i'd even settle for a "Jackal" remake.
Just beat this. That middle part on the last level with the flipping platforms was brutal. I love the triple-replay of the money shot after beating final boss. So awesome.

I'm with you, ryoken. As one Strider fanatic to another, we need a new one (I'd even settle for Strider 1) done like this stat.
I love the demo, I'm intrigued by it and I kinda maybe want to buy the full game. Is there more to it than shooting purple dudes and swinging around a bit? I just want to know it's worth ten bucks...
Well, saying it's just swinging around and shooting purple dudes is like saying all you do in Super Mario Bros. is jump on monsters and collect coins. Yeah, technically, that's all you do, but the brilliance of it comes from the level design and the way it expands on the central concept of swinging and shooting said purple dudes. Some of the level layouts are quite challenging and demand exceptional use of the arm. Plus, beyond the excellently crafted single player game, there's local co-op and close to 100 challenge rooms (think obstacle courses designed explicitly around swinging). Plus, there's an upgrade every weapon to be found and multiple secret rooms in every level. In short, they could have gotten away with charging 30 bucks for this sucker and it'd still be worth it.
I beat it on easy and now I'm going through on Normal. I'm pretty afraid of the Albatross level, specifically what the outside with the moving planks will be like now that I don't have the easy level pink blocks to land on when I inevitably screw up. Oh, and is it just me, or is the sound effect for the pistol incredibly satisfying?
I'm sold. Going to buy it on PSN.

Man, fuck Braid. This is the game to get.

Preach it, Alex! Im having more fun with this one than "Braid", a lot of nostalgia and some of the bosses are midgets!
Also, I take back my angry comment about the Rocket launcher having splash damage on your character...it really takes away the cheapness that weapon had back in the NES version.
I actually am really digging Braid and occasionally getting pissed at this game (mostly because some of my grappling hook skills have really atrophied).

I'm also disappointed that they couldn't get the engine to run at 1080p, there's a lot of stuff going on but it doesn't seem like so much that it couldn't do higher rez.
This is the first game that I have had in a while in which I looked at the clock and realized that I had been playing it for three hours straight. Its disturbingly addictive.
While I love this game, the two secret tunnels piss me off, especially the one at the bottom of the map. The second switch is almost impossible to trigger without dying.
Best purchase I have made for my 360 so far. This is fantastic.
How do I use my flares in the first dark tunnel? It's a bitch to see.
Assuming you have them they should just activate automatically.
If you have the flares they'll work automatically (an area radius from a glowing flare stuck out of your pant-leg). If you don't have them, the whole tunnel is complete darkness (except seeing spikes a little bit).
pure crack

love it
I'll echo the statement that I love this game, even though my swinging skills have gone to shit since the NES days.
How do I get said flares?
They're in the second base camp.

Finally beat this bich! Man, satisfying ending... but I'm not going to tell you how many tries it took to beat that last level. Amazing fucking game.
Which difficulty level Alex?

Just Normal. I'm still trying to find all the weapon upgrades, though. Loving the shotgun one.
I went through and beat it on easy first (with no weapon upgrades, sadly). I'm going through on Normal now, and I have to say, the little lighting shooting robots in the construction zone make me weep.

They weren't in Easy? Oh and yeah, saw your other post- that Albatross section with the planks that drop? Absolutely brutal. Make sure you have a lot of extra lives.... that level's incredibly unforgiving.

There's a secret inside one of the sewer tunnels (the lower one, not sure which levels it connects) that contains a Secret Dossier- that thing will flash whenever you're near a secret of some sort or a weapon upgrade. Really handy.
I could find a way to rape software I would put it to this game. Its addicting, but its dominating me to no end.

I have a couple more levels to do... the boss battle with the SPOILER ALERT dude with the bionic arm was completely badass.

That's an awesome trailer.

The music in it actually reminded me of a cool little detail. On levels like the sewer plant, you can hear the music for the level faintly pulsating in the background, as though the music was actually playing inside the building and you're just hearing the bass line and vibrations.

Great review, I myself bought the soundtrack two days ago through iTunes and don't regret it in the least.

I really can't stop listening to that bastard. I threw it on my Xbox via a usb card and now every game sounds like it. You'd be surprised how much better it makes them...

Great review. makes me very envious.

Why? It's out for PC! Although it's 15 bucks on there.
wow! I love you right now.
Great, Alex's gushing got all over me, as well as everyone else's. Ugh.

I really should have bought this with my remaining XBL points instead of Metal Slug 3, but dem's da breaks, and I'm broke until next Wednesday. Damn you, tuition and books!
