Transmissions From The Satellite Heart

One of my favorite albums of all time, I never hear it get the praise it deserves. It's by far the Flaming Lips' best album. Perfect combination of noise, rock, and pop. Everytime I listen to this album I'm sad that the Flaming Lips don't let their drummer rock out any more. Not much room for John Bonham-esque skin pounding in space pop.

I'm not a big fan of seeing bigger bands live. Too much money for not enough enjoyment.

Huge crowds. More than 20 dollars. I'm not really a live show kind of guy.

I'll have to respectfully disagree and say that Soft Bulletin is their best, but give it up for respect to the Lips. I was obsessed with them back in HS/early college.

I can't stand Soft Bulletin. There's only about 3 songs I really like on it, as opposed to Transmissions, which I like all of.

There's a story behind that (from what I've been told - I haven't seen it yet) in The Fearless Freaks, their documentary. He had a bad heroin addiction (is there any other kind?) back then and it fucked his arm up pretty bad.

I've been jonesing to go to one of their shows for so long now I'm beginning to think I never will. They were at ACL two years ago and I hoped they'd return this year so I could finally see them, but no such luck. Fuckin great record, by the way.

The Gash, Race for the Prize, A Spoonful Weighs a Ton, and Buggin' I enjoy. The rest is blah.

Sorry, but you are all wrong. The Lips' best album is TELEPATHIC SURGERY, followed closely by ZAIREEKA, then CLOUDS TASTE METALLIC, then HIT TO DEATH IN THE FUTURE HEAD, closely followed by TRANSMISSIONS, SOFT BULLETIN, PRIEST DRIVEN AMBULANCE, YOSHIMI and then AT WAR. It is quite simple actually haha. To tell you the truth, I grew up on the southern Kansas border and the Lips were the closest thing I had to a local rock band. I've had the good fortune to spend time with both Wayne and Drozd and they are, without a doubt, two of the greatest people I've ever met. Simply delightful.

What about Yoshimi and Telepathic?

I was just talking about songs on Soft Bulletin I like.

Yoshimi, I enjoy it a lot even though I don't listen to it nearly as much as Transmissions.

Telepathic I have not listened to.

"The rest" includes "The Spiderbite Song" and "Waitin' for a Superman," and they're pretty far from blah.

Telepathic Surgery and Hear It Is are both great albums. As is Transmissions. Oh My Gawd and In A Priest Driven Ambulance are kinda "enh" to me. Most of the stuff between Priest Driven Ambulance and The Soft Bulletin I've never heard (Transmissions is the exception).

Forgot about Waitin' For Superman. That's pretty good.

One of the things about a great band like this is that they have at least four albums that are arguably their best.

I think my favorite is Clouds Taste Metallic. It's their puberty album, when they grew up a little from the silly/fun noise pop rock songs that dominate Transmissions (and while Patrick is right to say it's under appreciated and contains some incredible songs...including that incredible last track...some of it is just simply dumb fun, ie, She Don't Like Jelly) but hadn't discovered the sublime melodic "wall-of-sound" they eventually matured into with The Soft Bulletin.

Patrick, as far as you not liking The Soft Bulletin that much (and this is sincere and I don't mean to sound snide or condescending at all) but give it a few years and then try it again. When it first came out, I was in college...and not a really huge fan of it either. Five years later, it's my second favorite Lips album, and probably, by all other standards, their "best." But I think it's an album that requires you to engage it with a certain amount of life experience, strange as that might sound...

I will. I didn't like it the first time I listened, I kinda almost liked it a little bit when I listened to it more recently, so I'll give it a another shot later.

Transmissions is probably my favorite, too. Yoshimi is almost perfect, though.

Going to a Flaming Lips concert is close to a religious experience. Don't sell them short, Patrick. I can pretty much guarantee you'd leave with your mind blown.

Copious and sundry psychedelics will help as well.

It's just all the crowds of other people and I don't really like their new album at all, it just feels like a waste of money. I just don't enjoy live shows enough.

Oddly enough, their former guitarist was agoraphobic too.

I saw them live at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago when they played New Year's 2004 with the White Stripes. Simply put, it was unlike any other concert I've been to. I'm usually one to avoid big shows as well, but I couldn't let myself miss it like I did Flaming Lips/Beck on Halloween at Madison Sq. Garden in '02.

If there's one band today worth seeing live, it's The Flaming Lips, no matter what your opinion of the newer stuff is.

No love for The Spark That Bled?
