The 2008 Super Bowl Thread - Page 3

Excellent game. I can't wait to read KSK tomorrow and Bill Simmons' next column. Whenever they resuscitate him, that is.

Commercials, on the whole, weren't good. But those that were... great. Iron Man, the Doritos one, the JT spot. What was up with the Danica Patrick spot? Sound and fury signifying nothing?

I'd be more pleased about the Pats losing if I wasn't still bitter about Super Bowl XXV. (I'm only half joking.)
I was so damn nervous during Eli's last drive but when Burress caught the TD pass I just had to go nuts. The best commercial was probably the FedEx pigeons one.
Great fourth quarter, and, I guess, a great Super Bowl given how rarely these games are at all competitive. To see Eli Manning overcome his greatest flaw (collapsing like a deck of cards at the first sign of a blitz) on that final drive was something else.

Easily the second biggest upset in NFL history.
Given that there was the massive clusterfuck with one second remaining, am I correct in remembering that Belichick did *not* go onto the field to congratulate Coughlin at the end of the game? They showed a line of Pats walking toward the locker room while the oficials were still trying to get that last kneel-down finished.

If he couldn't have the personal grace to congratulate his opponent on the field, I'm gonna have to believe that he really is as big a douche as some of his haters have made him out to be. That was just classless.

Amazing fourth quarter. I didn't think Manning could do it. We've seen Brady and the Pats go through situations like this time and again and pull it out. Manning has done it several times this year, but he wasn't in the "John Ellway" league as Brady was.

No more doubts from me, man. He nutted up big time. And that catch from Tyree should add a substantial amount to his next contract. That was simply astounding.
Didn't he walk out on the field with a second to go and hug Coughlin? The game wasn't officially over yet, but what else can one do with a second left?
Yeah, Belichick not being on the field wasn't a big deal I think. The storming happened and the coaches did their greet 'n' shake. The kneeldown was a formality and Belichick's absence didn't signify anything. Joe Buck gave a limp-wristed attempt at making it mean something.

If it's a PTI topic tomorrow, I'll be surprised.

Holy hell, though. I did not expect 19-0 to be a fleeting possibility. I thought it was going to be real and then no one would ever argue ever again about the NFL's greatest all-time squad.

I still hate Eli's constant mouth-ajar expression, but damn, he made history tonight. Go DOSL.
For some reason, the Tide talking stain ad really made me laugh just out sheer WTF-edness. Fed-Ex pigeons was great, too.
Eli getting away from that rush was definitely this year's most shocking superbowl moment. Usually Eli curls up and lays on the ground when someone brushes up against him.
NY is pretty happy right now. Never been in a city that won a championship before. Lovely.
I really enjoyed watching that classless piece of shit get embarassed. He can't wait out the final play and stay with his team? After running up the score mercillessly throughout the year, he doesn't have the stomach to stick around after he gets beat?

One of the best Super Bowls ever. Considering how tarnished the Patriots' win over the Rams has become in the wake of spygate, the only one that may be better is the Rams over the Titans.
I'm on Cloud Nine. I hate the Giants, but as long as Randy Moss continues to lose, I'll be pleased.

Has anyone every been hated so much and in five shorts weeks become a hero to millions, like Eli Manning? Unbelievable.

The Giants D were simply amazing. It was 7-3, and someone I was watching the game with said the game was boring. It blew me away. The Giants D played their hearts out and if someone couldn't see that, and appreciate it, then they shouldn't be watching the NFL...ever.

I've never liked Brady. For all the talk about he's supposedly perfect (or at least a great QB with millions of dollars that bangs supermodels and has 3 super bowl rings), there's always been some quality about him that has just rubbed me the wrong way. Like he's some sort of soulles golem that is incapable of love or free thought or something. Look into his eyes and it's like staring into nothingness.

Anyway, I am quite pleased with how this game turned out. More than pleased, actually.
Have to say, I'm completely stunned. Never in a million years did I think the Patriots' offense would get shut down like that, in a dome no less! Someone said it here first, but the defensive line should've gotten the MVP.

As far as people saying the game was boring, I had a couple at my party tonight say the same thing. But with around 10 minutes to go in the fourth, no one left their spot in front of the TVs we had. Great ending, and congrats to the Giants for pulling it off. Unbelievable...

The Patriots got beaten Eli Manning: the NFL equivalent of Frank Stallone.
Gotta give props to Wes Welker, he played his ass off in that game, even if Brady seemed to forget he existed every once in a while.
Between my two fantasy teams, I had about a half dozen of the players in the Super Bowl:

Tom Brady
Eli Manning
Brandon Jacobs
Wes Welker
Jabar Gaffney
Jeremy Shockey/Kevin Boss
Kawika Mitchell
thinking about it overnight, I have to admit that the Giants D was just...unbelievable. Bringing pressure that hot with four or five guys...all night long...was a mission statement in and of itself.
One of the more entertaining Super Bowls in recent memory. Giants' defense was superlative, and weird-eye Eli didn't buckle under pressure. Was such a blast to watch with friends from Manhattan visiting. Belechick can eat a dick.

So what is Tyree's catch gonna be called?
Wow, Belichik sure was gracious during his post-game interview. What a cock.
As an aside, anyone else enjoy the halftime show in that sort of, 'well, at least they're playing instruments and not trying to overload our senses with crazy pyrotechnics' way? And hey, no wardrobe malfunction on Petty (who is looking oooooooold, I swear he was propped up with a metal rod up his pants and shirt). It was nice, low key, pretty forgettable yet oddly credible at the same time, precisely what the half time show needs to be.

Damn if I still don't love seeing Petty on stage, too.

That is exactly what happened to me. Watching the Pats coach walk away in a huff was hilarious.

I've been referring to it as the Helmet Catch.

That's a bit of an exaggeration, since that first half was sloppy as hell. Even when either quarterback had time to throw, they were missing wide open guys, and receivers were either dropping balls or running bad routes. Without the fourth quarter, the only thing mitigating what was a rather mediocre football game up until that point was the fact that the Giants "weren't supposed to be in it."
I'm going to call it the Madden catch. Tyree's collision detection was shit and yet he somehow caught the ball. Belichick broke his Dual Shock 2 as a result.

I liked Prince's halftime last year so much better it's not even funny. I prefer showmanship and guitar histrionics in my halftime shows.

Good question. That was the front page shot of the L.A. Times sports section today. Also, a pic of Seau face down on the field after the Plax TD.

Too bad for Seau. He was > < this close to a ring.

Sorry, I'm with paso. If you thought that game was boring, you need to just go back to watching the NBA. That was the second-best Super Bowl I've witnessed (next to SF/CIN II) and I enjoyed every minute of it.

Best commercial? Charlie Brown, hands down.

And as for haltime, is it me or did they let Prince play longer last year? When Petty finished song no. 4 and said "that's it" I felt cheated. I enjoyed both shows but to me, TP didn't get half the time Prince did.
As far as I can tell, nobody here is calling the game—in its entirety—boring, but I can completely understand people being bored by the first three quarters.
It was kind of a division at the party I was at. The people who love football were enjoying the hell out of the game. There was some really great defense and hitting out there. The rest were kind of bored until the 4th.

JA Adande called Tyree's catch The Slip and Grip, which I kind of liked, except for the obvious sexual innuendo.

Most watched Super Bowl ever

Quote:
Fox says it's official: Sunday's suspenseful matchup between the New England Patriots and the New York Giants was the most-watched Super Bowl in history, according to time-zone-adjusted fast national Nielsen estimates provided by the network.

An estimated 97.5 million viewers, up 5% from last year, tuned in to watch the Giants achieve a last-minute upset of the previously undefeated Patriots to make Super Bowl history.

The show was the second-most watched television program of all time, behind the 1983 finale of "M*A*S*H," which was viewed by 106 million people. The previous most-watched Bowl, with 94.1 million viewers, was Dallas vs. Pittsburgh in 1996.

Sunday’s game scored a 37.6 rating among adults 18 to 49, making it the highest-rated Super Bowl in the demo in eight years. The 1996 Super Bowl remains the highest rated with a 41.2 rating.

This year’s Super Bowl was followed by an original episode of “House,” which earned a record-setting 12.8. "House" was the highest-rated scripted program on any network in two years and was up 29% from last year's post-game airing of "Criminal Minds" on CBS.

Overall, Fox enjoyed its highest-rated night ever in the demo and in total viewers, as well as posting the highest-rated night on any broadcast network in at least 17 years.

So, are there any Patriots left in the Pro Bowl now? I can understand Brady opting out, but Moss? I've never heard him "claim" any kind of injury. Whatever.
There damn sure shouldn't be any of their offensive line in the pro bowl. God dammit...

Can you blame Brady? He's got super models to fuck. Moss? He's not even going to be with the Patriots next year.

I don't understand this at all. Hyperbole be damned, this was one of the best Super Bowls I have watched in my thirty-three years. The people calling it boring must have no interest in watching a defense play the best game of their lives.

Low scoring does not equal boring.

So you're blaming the Giants D-line's amazing performance on sloppy play?

Football isn't always about pure offensive entertainment, running the perfect routes, scoring lots of TD's, never missing an open receiver, etc. How anybody could watch the Super Bowl and not be able to notice how special the Giants D were playing is a travesty.

It's not shocking when you hear these types of things from people who only watch the Super Bowl - and there are more of these types of people then actual people who follow and understand the game, in my area. The guy who told me the game was boring was the same guy who had a Christmas party at his house, when the Pats and Giants played in week 17. In the 4th quarter he kept on switching the channel to a Calgary Flames game that was in the 1st period. The next Saturday, we're at another party when the Jags and Steelers were playing and once again he's on me for having the game on because "there's no way the Steelers can come back from being down by two TDs". Stupid Canadians and their fucking Saturday night hockey.

But here's the thing about those first three quarters, the Giants' D is just one fraction of the game. New England's defense never got pressure on Manning, and yet, that didn't seem to stop him from air mailing practically everything thrown Plaxico's way. Let alone poor receiver play in general from the Giants, leading to poor routes and some God awful plays on the ball.

I don't know what you think about this, but the Patriots D wasn't all that entertaining, or impressive to me, and the Giants offense still couldn't manage more than three points in the first three quarters.

And that's the thing, it's easy to call a low scoring game a defensive struggle, and calling out anyone that didn't enjoy the first three quarters as ignorant. What I think a lot of people here are doing, honestly, is confusing the entertainment inherent in seeing a heavy favorite get their just desserts with the entertainment one finds in a well played game. While the Giants' defensive line played absolutely out of their minds for the first three quarters, the same can't be said for practically any other aspect of the game.

Now, with everything on the line in this game, it's hard to call the first three quarters anything but compelling, but a lot of that is external to the game, and for people that just watch football a handful of times in a year (perhaps even less), it's hard to judge them harshly based on the actual game on the field.
