What's currently in your Netflix queue? - Page 2

Yeah, I can get The State Within within the next business day but it's not the same thing.
State Within's really good, too. Jason Isaacs as the British Ambassador to the United States investigating conspiracies and laying shifty Americans low with his ice-blue "I will fuck you up" stare. Plus, the love interest in that is hot as hell.
I watched "Landmarks of Silent Film" this weekend, but it went out on Saturday. Guess they'll never know I sent it back in and I'll be stuck with the two releases at a time thing until I finally complain and threaten to actually go see a film at the local theater.

Which, of course, I'm unlikely to do*. But still.

*Local Theater. Small town. BFE. Nothing but teens and their fucking goddamned cell phones and their squalling spratlings. The popcorn's decent, though.

Back up, for those who care.
I'm loving me some instant view. Way more than waiting for the mail. I can see a movie like Harry In Your Pocket and say "hmm I think I'll watch that now" and I do. It's not even available to rent. Pretty cool.

All I get is three rows of We expect to ship your next available movie today.

I'm not falling for their lies again.
My next handful of movies coming:

1. The Goonies - this should arrive tomorrow. I know it's brought up every so often around here, but I never did see it (I was in college at the time, and it was a kids' movie, so that's pretty much why. But I figured I'd give it a chance now).

2. All The Pretty Horses.

3. The Mist, now that it's finally out on DVD.

Blu-ray of I Am Legend went from "Now" to "Short Wait" to "Long Wait" in the space of a few hours. Nuts.

Oh, and it looks like the movie ratings system is in the crapper for the moment. The report I saw on the news last night said the site was down for 11 hours, which was the second longest outage since Netflix's launch.
Lisa, if you've never seen Goonies before now, you are in for what is going to be a pretty unbearable experience. I'm just warning you.

Here, let me sum the movie up for you:

ALL YELLING, ALL THE TIME.

Also, very funny that Josh Brolin grew up from weak-willed jock to "real man of American cinema."
Yeah, I figured nothing ventured, nothing gained. May as well see it. I'm curious to see the origins of Brolin and his Mighty Pornstache. Actually, my first Brolin movie was Flirting With Disaster back when it was out in the theaters, so I didn't do too badly for myself on that one.

Bob, I don't have your Mist. I hope I get my Mist. I just have it coming up very quickly in my queue, but I have the "short wait" notation next to it. You might get it before me!
I've finally got around to adding The Straight Story to my queue. Time to get in on some entry level Lynch.
Just got notification that Michael Clayton and Once are on their way. Rejoice.

Blockbuster said the rest of BSG was on Short Wait, but they shipped disc 2, anyway.

YAY!!!

Christ, I should have listened to you. The other kids were bad enough, but how did they not all group-murder Chunk and dump his body under the pirate ship? I was trying to figure out a way to reach through the screen and beat his ass. Brolin was the only kid who didn't get on my last nerve, although I'd have to assume it's because he was the older/protector role.

And my reward for sitting through that is All the Pretty Horses, which should arrive tomorrow. I've never seen it before, but have only heard good things. And Henry Thomas playing Matt Damon's best friend is always a bonus as far as I'm concerned.

Goddamn it. All The Pretty Horses arrived last night - broken in two. Now I have to wait for a replacement.
What is up with Netflix having broken or scratched DVDs all the time? It's only happened to me once, with Jekyll, but still.

Lisa, what did you think of The Goonies?
On the advice of Soul Ahn Ice, I just added a documentary called DARKON to my queue:

Ordinary folks trade in their street clothes for medieval costumes, faux weaponry and full-contact battles in Andrew Neel and Luke Meyer's documentary about Darkon, a group that acts out fantasy war games based on complex rules and customs. Neel and Meyer capture the drama as padded swords clash, armies advance and a ruler crosses the line, while off the battlefield, participants open up about what keeps them coming back for more.

Funny that you mentioned it, I received The Wire season three disc five with a huge crack in the center. I hate returning stuff because I'm paranoid enough to think that someone at Netflix gives a crap enough to think that I damaged the disc.

So far I have one missing disc: Bunny Lake is Missing
And one heavily damaged disc: The Wire

They have also started to throttle my ass. I returned 4 movies on Saturday and they didn't ship new movies to me until today.

I'm on the five at a time plan.
When I was eight, I got throttled like a motherfucker. I'm on six right now, but I haven't returned any of the movies I had until this week. One of the joys of having Netflix is that if you don't get to a movie, you don't have to feel bad about returning it. You can always check it out again.

Bunny Lake is Missing's so great, though.

Right now I have:

State of Play Disc 2
Brute Force (R.I.P. Jules Dassin)
The Big Combo
Grand Illusion

Next six slots are:

Walker
Dr. Who Season 1 Disc 1
Hana-Bi
Bruce Springsteen: Born to Run
Damages Disc 1
Southland Tales (I gots to know.)
Star 80
Just out of curiosity, by "throttled" do you guys mean getting worse service because you have the bigger plans (and therefore aren't as profitable a customer)? I've never had more than 3-at-a-time so I've pretty much avoided that. Now the fiancee and I are down to 2-at-a-time, which means as soon as my movie's ready to ship I hear a knock at the door and a stripper is there with the movie tied up in her g-string.

Anyway, below DARKON, my queue looks like this at the top:

Picnic at Hanging Rock
The Year of Living Dangerously
The Field
Murder by Death
Rififi
South Park: Imagination Land Trilogy (rendered moot by the free downloads)
The Bicycle Thief
The Naked City
Love and Death
American Gangster
Killer of Sheep
Cocaine Cowboys
The Last Wave
The Gambler
The Seven-Ups
Pulp
The Duellists
Z Channel: A Magnificent Obsession
Throttled means that they'll ship your DVDs slower if you have a larger plan but you're very close to a shipping center. There's basically a point where, even if you're dropping 30/40 bucks a month on a plan, it becomes more expensive for them to ship them to you then what you're paying. So they slow the turnaround time down, or they'll send from a different location, etc.

I posted about it right up above, Rath, you must have scrolled past it. I mean, I can see where it was appealing to kids, but seeing it for the first time as an adult, it annoyed the hell out of me.

Just checked my queue status, and it says my replacement of All The Pretty Horses shipped today, which if they've sent it from the usual location in Queens, means I should have it tomorrow. I will say one thing for them, they're fast as hell with their shipping. Which is another reason I save money by just doing the one at a time unlimited plan for $9.00. I'm really fast with watching the film, and they're really fast about sending them to me. Plus, working two jobs, it would just be a waste of movies for me to try and watch anymore than one at a time. As it stands, I still get to see roughly three movies a week. Perfect example are the two I just mentioned. I got The Goonies Friday night, and watched it that evening. Mailed it back on Saturday on my way to work, and got All The Pretty Horses last night. Right now, the only thing that's holding up my routine is that ATPH was broken, but to give them credit, that's rare.

Okay, coming in the mail today.

Doctor Who Season 3: Disc 5
Elf
The Straight Story
The worst problem I've had with Netflix has been The West Wing Seasons 1 through 3. I had a total of 5 cracked discs. Only two would even play and only one of those would let me actually watch an episode. I would lay awake at night, worrying that every noise I heard was Netflix police coming to get me.
I've had discs that skip due to scratching, most of the time I just keep going but I had to reorder The Celluloid Closet because the first disc was unplayable.

Never had a cracked disc though
The second disc of Dinosaurs! Season 1 and 2 was cracked. Something else was too but I can't remember what.

It does happen, but not with the frequency of Baker's West Wing discs. That is a shit deal to say the least. Did they follow up on it or anything or explain how they hadn't caught that problem before? Was compensation offered?
Netflix didn't contact me at all. To be fair though, my post office is run by a pair of grumpy senior citizens so I always figured they would see these new fangled red envelopes with the mini-records in them and become so infuriated by the youth of today they would crack them.
I had a bad stretch of luck about three years ago with unplayable discs, complained via e-mail and got 2 free months. What finally pissed me off enough to complain was that I went almost 3 weeks without a disc that would play all the way through (they were also shipping very slowly at the time- those 3 weeks or so I received maybe 6 discs, and that was with me returning the useless discs the day after I got them).

Then, last year, I had to report 4 discs as missing in a very short period of time, 3 that got lost coming to me, and one that got lost on the way back. I was sure they thought I was lying and would blacklist me or something.

EDIT - Poor wordmanship.
At the moment the Netflix account is my father's, so the family members get movies as well.

So here's how it looks for the future:

Right now I've got Badlands coming to me and a disc of Roswell for the sister.

Then

Days of Heaven
Battlestar Galactica Season 1 Disc 1
New York, New York
BSG Disc 2
The King of Comedy
BSG Disc 3
The Nest (this French semi-remake of Assault on Precinct 13 that sounds really good)
BSG Disc 4
M
BSG Disc 5
Metropolis
In the 2+ years I've been a member, I've received less than a dozen discs that either skipped or would not play (I'm on the 3 at-a-time plan). There were times in 2006 and early 2007 where shipping delays tested my patience, but I don't see much of that anymore. My only other real complaint is that Long Waits and Very Long Waits happen more often than I think they should. All things considered, though, Netflix has been one of the most customer friendly companies I've ever dealt with on a regular basis. In the few times I've called to complain about this or that, I don't remember a time where they didn't offer at least a free bonus rental to make up for it.

My Queue -

At Home*:
The Darjeeling Limited
3:10 To Yuma (2007)
The Looney Tunes Golden Collection: Vol. 1

Next Ten**:
Into the Wild
American Gangster
The Mist
Little Big Man
Stripes
There Will Be Blood
Juno
Reservation Road
The Rolling Stones: Gimme Shelter
The X-Files: Season 1: Disc 1

*I've had these two movies out for far too long. Different things keep preventing me from watching them. Hope to finally sit down with Darjeeling tonight.

**Considering the titles, I can't believe that the only thing I've already seen in my next ten is most of X-Files: Season 1. It's been years since I've watched this show and I look forward to catching the episodes I've never seen.
Here are my next three:

The Mist
Secretary
Stardust Memories

There was no "short wait" indicator next to The Mist, so maybe they'll ship it today? There's a notification saying they've received All the Pretty Horses, so that would be my next one. What do they do if you're on a wait list - do they just ship the next one in your queue?
The next 10:

The Last Temptation of Christ
Ronin
The Long Kiss Goodnight
Assault on Precinct 13 (both of 'em. Yes, I suck, I've never seen either)
The Adventures of Buckaroo Bonzai
Bring Me The Head of Alfredo Garcia
The Serpent and the Rainbow
Eraserhead
Kagemusha
Straw Dogs
Huh. Well look at that. I've got The Mist shipping to me today. Didn't think I'd get it that fast. Bob, did you ever get yours from them?

I have to know -- please tell me I'm not the only one who is constantly reordering their queue, adding new shit, moving stuff around, down, then back up to the top depending on whims. I almost wish there was a feature that allowed you to lock your queue for periods at a time.
I'm sometimes obsessive about my queue order. I mess with it almost everyday. I always try to balance it so I have 2 DVD's that my wife will watch with me and 2 that she won't. So if we send back 2 she watched I have to move two up that she wants to see. Also, if two movies are coming to me that don't line up in my head, I will push one back so it will come with something that compliments it better. I'm not as obsessive compulsive as this seems to indicate.
At home:

Crime Story
Streets of Fire
Until Death
Takeshis'

Top 10 in Queue:

Zodiac Directors Cut
They Live
The Player
Eyes Without a Face
The Seventh Seal
Manhattan
The Last Temptation of Christ
The Unbearable Lightness of Being
Beastmaster
Drunken Angel

Though I'm always getting shipped stuff from the back-end of my queue.. stupid Canadian netflix equivilant!

Man, what a waste of a 1000th post!

Yeah, I'm constantly re-prioritizing my queue based on whatever catches my fancy any given week.

For example I have been balancing my movies with any series that I am catching up with (The Wire, BSG). Once I am done with one another is being shipped shortly after.
It took about six months but I'm finally on track to getting Death Note Vol 1. and 2 with The Parallax View.

One of these days though I need to start on my review of The Wire.

I still have "very long wait" for The Mist. But they are sending me TWBB and Dewey Cox today, so no complaints.
Rath, I'm constantly flipping my queue around based on my mood. The Mist is a perfect example - I added it to my "saved" section way back before it was out on DVD, and when it finally came out, it immediately went towards the tail end of my queue. I bumped it to the top, based on Alex's review. Alot of times, I keep telling myself, "You know, just leave your queue alone. Don't even check it, just let the chips fall where they may." And I want to do that, but I don't have the willpower to stop shuffling stuff around in there.
Because of what I read on CHUD, my queue changes on almost a daily basis.

And seems to be growing at an alarming rate.
