No More Heroes

So today this insane Wii game is coming out. Anyone had a chance to give it a run yet? It's tempting to pick it up, and at Gamerankings it is getting some decent scores so far.
Ah crap..and there I was, hoping "Heroes" would have been canceled.
I'm really curious about this game, but I need to read some in-depth reviews before I actively seek it out. Time to check out Gamerankings, methinks.

I enjoy Killer 7, but would have been pissed if I had payed 50 bucks for it.
The IGN review makes it sound kinda dissappointing. Sucks I was hoping to boot up the Wii again...
Seconded. For some reason, I just can't get back into Galaxy.

Seems the GTA-type portions suck but the fighting and style are fantastic. Seeing as how the driving around takes up a good portion, that's sad.

The Wii has a few really cool games, just not enough that I'd want to blow 50 bucks on. The decent older games aren't really dropping in price much(if at all) either.

Glad I'm not the only one. Every time I turn it on, I'll get one or two stars and then that's it. I can't keep my attention on it.

Metacritic is showing an 88 average score, with Gametrailers, Gamespy, and IGN being the only reviews below 90. And G4 gave it 100.
After playing for a couple of hours, I think I can safely say that this game is totally fucking batshit insane, and I love it. Well worth dusting off the Wii for (if your Wii requires dusting off).

There is, however, one fairly sizeable bug that I'm surprised no-one at UbiSoft or Nintendo caught: If you have the Wii Remote speaker muted in the Wii system settings, but the Remote Speaker is set to 'ON' in the in-game settings, you won't get any audio for the cell phone calls that you get shortly before the Ranked Assassin fights. I didn't figure it out until after the second ranked fight, and I'm a tad annoyed by that.
one review mentioned that you could put your back to the screen and just mash the A button and plow through enemies. I hope thats not true.
That is in fact a god damned lie. The combat system is surprisingly in depth, and the boss battles can get extremely fucking hard.
The only thing that has me interested in this game is the fact that Suda 51 said that he made this game after being inspired by El Topo. "The bullets, I offer them no resistance.."
The boss battles are tough, but this game is wonderfully insane. It's nice to see a thrilling action game with such a unique, messed up sensibility, especially on the Wii. However, I could only play for a couple hours since my arm hurt from slicing people in half with the Wiimote after awhile.
This game was actually one of the reasons I got a Wii in the first place. Been looking forward to it for a long, long time.
I'm gonna get this game; seems like it'd be fun to slice people in half using Wiimote.
The introduction of the 9th-best assassin is pretty amazing. I haven't seen something as balls-out insane as this game in a while... well, since God Hand which wasn't that long ago, but before that there was next to nothing... and haven't been consistently laughing and smiling while playing a game like this since... well since Portal which wasn't long ago, but there was a long while before that. There's a good writeup on No More Heroes on this blog, which gets linked from GameSetWatch pretty frequently...
Old bump, but I just got this and it's the most absurd game I've ever played. I kinda love it.

I still haven't bought this yet, but I am thinking about grabbing it while on vacation if I beat Bioshock and Mario Galaxy first.
Here are some thoughts from another thread when I couldn't find this one for whatever reason. Was that around revamp time?

I love the game. The dialogue, the style, the boss battles, and the fighting system are all top notch. Too bad it looks like ass for the most part, and the "open world" is pretty useless unless you LOVE kicking open dumpsters and sticking your sword in the dirt.
I just got this last week, myself ($20 @ CCity, suckas). Started playing it Saturday night, and WOW. Nutballs. In the best way possible. I am enjoying.

The 9th intro at the stadium was indeed great and odd.

I have to remember to kick some dumpsters.

Where is the old dude I'm supposed to give these balls to?
Okay, the bar opened up, so now I can go see Lovikov and trade in my balls. It's irritating how there's no information on the seven techniques at all (as far as I can tell) within the game. I had to go hit up GameFAQs just now to figure out what the two I bought would do for me.

Am I missing something that would explain these to me in-game?

Memory of Demon: lets you perform a Jumping Slash by shaking the nunchuk
Would I have figured that out? Not likely.
I just beat this sumbitch about a half hour ago. Fun! Make sure you choose the "Real Ending" when you're given the choice at the end of the game.

For me, Bad Girl, the #2 assassin, was the hardest part of the game by far. The #1 fight was pretty tricky, as well.

I'm going to let a friend try it for a while, then maybe I'll go back and play it on a more difficult level later. Anyone trying that yet?

Here is the 1st gameplay trailer for No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle. No point in creating a new thread I figured, especially with E3 coming up. New game threads are bound to pop up all over.

Looks like more of the same, but possibly with more story. The previous one didn't really have much of one until the end. Duel beam katanas, a smoother framerate, and a boss who throws his women at you... sounds good. I need more craziness.

I just hope they improve the city dramatically, as well as the graphics(they look improved but it's hard to judge from YouTube).

Was it just my television settings, or were the graphics during the free-roaming segments in NMH dark and muddy as fuck?

I don't remember them being dark, but the game has bizarre contrast issues(as in HIGH). As far as muddy, I dunno, it's pretty ugly most of the time graphically. Good thing the art style is awesome.
Has there been any word on how / if the free-roaming part of the game has been revised? Those segments pretty much killed the game for me.
The only thing I heard was that there would be more ranked missions. IMO the graphics look much better this time around.

I'm playing through the first game right now (ranked 4th) and it's been pretty fun. The over-world stuff is not very good, but I enjoy the non-ranked missions and the art style/humor. Also, beam katanas is funs.

Looks like this is finally getting ported to 360/PS3. I'm excited to finally have a chance to play this but not excited enough to consider buying it. I'll certainly rent it though.

I'll probably go ahead and get this on 360, since I never touched it on Wii. Did the sequel ever get confirmation?
Nice...finally a chance to try it.
The sequel is scheduled to come out early next year, along with every other game in existence.

The original has a lot of rough edges but it was a blast to play and has some awesome boss duels. Definitely one of those games you keep playing to see what sort of wacked-out shit was going to happen next, even if there was a lot of tedium in between. Absolutely worth a rental and I don't really regret buying it either. I'm looking forward to the sequel.
I sold my Wii last year, but No More Heroes is the last game for that console that I bothered to keep -- it's easily one of my favorite releases in years. The 360 port will be a day one purchase for me.
I'm poor as fuck and there's a glut of cool new games out, but is anyone getting the sequel to this?

IGN gave it a 8.8*. They've ditched the free roaming city and rejiggered the job missions into snazzy little NES-type games. Sounds good, but like I said, I'm poor. Maybe it will drop in price dramatically in a few months like the first one did.

*Man, their redesign sucks. This is probably the last time I'll go there.
I really liked NMH. Yeah, the overworld is fairly pointless, the non-fighting missions are silly (only fun to play through once), and the baseball missions were kinda busted but the assassination missions are for the most part great and the game has style and humor to spare throughout. Given the improvements, NMH2 looks like a definite purchase to me.
"Everybody deals with grief differently. Some people fuck at funerals. I cut off heads."

The sequel is pretty great. Graphics are slightly improved but still not that hot. It's still insane(the cat workout minigames in your apartment had me cracking up), the style is still rad, and there are a ton more ranked battles. Only killed 3 bosses so far but I'm really enjoying it.
Is the open world bullshit gone? The thing I hated most about the first one was killing a bunch of dudes in cool ways and you go outside and OH HEY LOOK AN N64 GAME.
Was it just me, or were the outside colors horribly dark and murky on top of the whole thing being a hot mess?

Yes, there's no overworld, so to speak. You just pick a destination from the map screen. It's certainly streamlined, but I get the feeling there was an overworld and they just lopped it off at the last minute.

I had fun with this when I rented it a while back. It does clean up the most annoying bits about the original but it's still got some rough edges. The few times it steps out of its comfort zone, it's just turrible.
God that game got old fast. I'll pick up the sequel if I can find it on the cheap, especially if there's more hurrlarious fap jokes.
I got it for $15 new on eBay, so yeah no regrets.

The game has the same annoying repeated voice samples for Travis and thugs during fights, but at least the thug variety is improved. Like I said before, it's still ugly but they have added a lot of little graphical tweaks and neat effects. Some of the NES-type games are good enough to want to play multiple times, others you'll want to quit the second they start, but there's still a good bit of variety to them and they're an improvement on the job stuff in the first one.

The only thing I miss from the first one are the little cell phone conversations that played through the Wii remote speaker. Maybe they pop up at some point but I haven't heard any.

Did you ever go to the gym? I'm finding the minigame for increasing stamina to be impossible. It just says to alternate between Z and B buttons to run, but I instantly fall off the treadmill. It's like I'm facing the wrong way or something. Any clue?

Oh! YES. I do remember that, and I had to look up what the fuck to do. You have to change the direction you're facing with the control stick so that you're walking against the treadmill. It doesn't usually (or ever) start you in the right direction.

It's still really difficult and basically impossible to get the last upgrade or two for it.
Sweet, thanks I'll give it another shot. I tried it 3 or 4 times(getting charged each time, of course), and fiddled with the control stick but he didn't turn around, but I probably wasn't doing it right.
It's not major, but
(spoiler for the 2 people playing this game) it gets a bit tricky in a few parts when you change characters. As much as I love the team behind this, they really weren't ready for jumping puzzles. (it's a bit like what happened with Brutal Legend, with their weak RTS, but I am still enjoying MUCH more of this game).
(end spoilers)

And yeah Jake, I know what you mean by muddy now, it's like the pixels are way bigger than they should be, if that makes sense. The contrast is still way extreme but not as distracting.
