The Board Game Appreciation Thread

I couldn't find a thread like this anywhere and I have no clue if one ever existed, so I figured I'd start one off with the first board game I ever played. There's nothing like popping that dice bubble over and over again, just waiting for a 6 to come up. Or stomping on your opponent right before he/she was about to get their little piece home. God I love this game!

Haha, the fucking popomatic bubble! Here's one, any one ever play the Nightmare on Elm Street board game? It was fucking huge, made no sense and was confusing as shit to play. I think I played it two times because I could never get enough people to play and the rules read like stereo instructions.

Conquest of the Empire. Dirty Word Scrabble. Loaded Questions. Beyond Balderdash. Axis & Allies. Monopoly.

With the right group of friends, these are better than nearly everything. Unfortunately it's impossible to get folks to do it.

I have never even heard of it. I played the game on NES, and that was a pretty pathetic piece of crap.

Risk, trivial pursuit and Pictionary.

Combine with booze and good friends.

I'd play Axis and Allies any day of the week! I'd always lose whenever I played as the Allies though.

Would the game Zombies! count? We have a blast everytime we play that. Monopoly is the fucking devil though. It always sounds like fun, but then like an hour into it, everybody is pissed off and loses interest. As for the Freddy board game here's a review of it

I need to see if I can find this at my dad's house sometime.

Anyone ever play this little gem?

At University I used to live in a house with a bunch of people and we had our monthly Wild Turkey/Pizza/Risk nights. It involved doing shots any time you lost a country. I played to lose. (Not that I had a huge choice, I may in fact be the world's worst strategist)

And Cheap Ass Games are the best party games ever!

I have all the Zombies! games, and love a lot of Twilight Creations stuff. Dante's Inferno is fantastic!

Fuck yah Ari! That game was awesome when I was a kid. Would Scene-It count? We have fun playing that game all drunk.

My friends and I love to play mean, spiteful games of Trivial Pursuit. I also love Risk but can rarely find anyone who likes to play.

I'm always down for a Risk match. Hell, me and my buddies were playing Risk at 1am on New Years eve! Drunk!

I used to play a lot of Risk, Monopoly, Trivial Pursuit, & Clue when I was younger. Now I find it hard to get several friends together who are willing to spend the time playing any of these, and none of those games are really that fun with two people.

Just bought Carcassone a few weeks ago. I'm hoping I can get my wife to play this with me.

Also, I know it's more of a card game than a board game, but I love playing Mille Bornes.

Many, many hours were wasted playing this, my favorite board game of all time.

Wasn't HeroQuest for kids who were too dumb to play D&D?

I kid, I kid..

No, it was for kids who actually liked having a board with their game, not graph paper and an unhealthy imagination.

Actually, I've never played D&D. Tried the Star Wars roleplaying game once. That lasted about 15 minutes.

Mille Bournes rocks the house. There is nothing more satisfying than wiping the smug smirk off an attacking player's face by yelling out "Coup Fourre', motherfucker! Coup Fourre!!"

My dad had a game called Mister Ree. It was a lot like Clue except you could frame your opponents for the murder by actually planting the weapon on them. I've been trying to find a complete set (at a reasonable price) for a while.

No kidding here. It sucked ass like no tomorrow. It was boring, plastic figures and board or not.

Milles Bornes is infinitely great, however.

Does anyone remember The Real Ghostbusters Game (this is the only picture I could find online). It had this killer 3-D board with traps to stop the Ghostbusters. For example, there was a suit of armor and its ax could fall to hit one of the boys, and a little plastic skull would plummet down the stairs to knock the boys off the steps. The goal was to catch enough ghosts to allow you to climb the steps to the top of the Ghostbusters HQ and close the Containment Unit before all of the ghosts escaped. My friends and I wore this game out.

Other than that, we were mad for the detective/sleuthing games: Clue, Clue Master Detective and Clue:The Great Museum Caper. As we got older, Scotland Yard became another standby.

Does anyone remember Thunder Road, the Road Warrior-esque board game? We loved that one, as well.

Clue:The Great Museum Caper was a masterpiece! I lost that game a long time ago, but I still remember sneaking around as the thief, stealing paintings and avoiding the cameras.

As for the HeroQuest hate, I'm going to send a couple of wandering monsters to all your houses to give you all a good plowing.

Dude, HeroQuest was dumb enough to make Mouse Trap feel like Axis and Allies. It's that shitty.

Did anyone on earth besides me have this one?

This game is why I never learned Chess as a youngster. Thanks Mom.

I recently purchased the American Godzilla movie tie-in game. It's fantastic.

Using a Play-Doh mold, participants stamp out multiple games pieces like tanks, jets, cars, etc. They then roll the dice to travel around a color-coded board filled with cardboard skyscrapers. When a player rolls a "Godzilla," he draws a card telling him which buildings or colored squares he can stomp. Woe betide the player whose Play-Doh gamepiece meets it fate at the hand of a 7-yr-old boy weilding the Godzilla Stomper, which leaves cute little Godzy-prints in the Play-Doh.

My older boy is absolutely infatuated with it. It's a case of the promotional item being superior to the item it's promoting.

I love me some Ticket to Ride.
In my house growing up, we only had boring-ass shit like Sorry! and Aggravation and Parcheesi. Oh great, you mean we're gonna play another game where you try to move your pieces around a big circle before everyone else? Yippee, thanks Mom.

I've played Ticket to Ride and Carcassonne, but never heard of that Descent game. Looks kinda interesting.

I bought Arkham Horror a couple weeks ago and have played a couple solo games with it so I know how the game works so when the nephews are over we can play together.

I have to say it's a pretty great game. Good atmosphere. Great characters. Good monsters. Lots of dice. I'm pleased with it.

First time I played though, my dilletante got devoured as soon as I got to the Old One.

It's so true Kevin K....if I could give you rep I would!
