Awesome

I want to see this movie.

Can someone please travel back in time and have Sam do this instead of The Osterman Weekend? Shit, I'd even sacrifice Convoy. I am that driven to make it happen.

I'll pay you, like, 50 bucks. And then we can Netflix the fucker and order some pizza. I'm buying... We could do it at Ramiro's place. He just got that 42 incher installed.

Come on, it will be totally worth it.

The Batman blog entry is one of the best thing I've read this year. I now know that until I die, I'll keep hoping a Two-Lane Blacktop Batman with Clint Eastwood is real.

I went back and started reading some of your other entries and I really like them. I never visit the CHUD blogs but yours will now be a regular for me.

I just rewatched Death Wish, and I couldn't stop thinking about this blog.

Something perversely hilarious about a fanwank version of a 70s Batman flick that's painted as an oddball failure. Nice stuff.

Hey Sam... Isn't it time you remembered Death Wish? I'm sure that was quite an interesting filmmaking experience for you. I want to see your specific intentions of the final shot, which was ripped off by Eastwood (or was it you?) when he made Mystic River.

(Dre's vision of a 70's Batman movie is the equivalent of Sting's supposed TM orgasms for me, by the way)

I admire your huevos rancheros.

And I agree.

A dick that should blog way more often. That was a fantastic read.

EDIT: I thought nobody suggested how you were wrong about Star Trek being pilot-esque simply because most people here would think that you're right.

E Unibus Pluram is fucking GREAT. I've tried to get more people to read it, but they just end up getting turned off either by Wallace's style or the length of the piece, which is pretty stupid since it's an essay anyway.

Excellent article, Dre. I like how you can wear both the hats of film critic and film enthusiast and give each equal weight.
Nice read, Dre.

(Burt Reynolds was right!)

I'm no critic (writer's brain missing a few pages), but as a film enthusiast, a fellow traveller, even if on a smaller (lost) highway.

Somewhat pedestrian comparatively, Roger Ebert was the biggest voice guiding my taste, Besides the show, bought the film guide from like 86 to 99. Re-reading his reviews over and over through the years, his word became like gospel. Finding Kael in college; she was both a revelation and a challenge. (Sadly, I remain rather bourgeois) Briggs was a world shaker, especially to those with delusions of elitist grandeur. His Monstervision glory was essential viewing.

Did you have any poor critical habits you had to break? (e.g. overrate a film based on star power, performances, or directorial flourishes)

And I always wondered, since your famous around these parts for being into all facets, periods and genres of film, what, if any, did you find to be a personal hurdle or blindspot?

Sorry for rambling. Nice to see the return of your blog!

My blindspot are mostly directors. Paul Mazursky I've never really imbibed to much of. There's also a period of mediocre mid 80's films that I've never bothered with The Color Purple or Always. I've dabbled in everything major. I can say I'm completely ignorant of Bollywood cinema, and I've only seen one Abbot and Costello film. Oh, I haven't seen the Road to films, though I was weaiting for a box set, which may be available. Otherwise, I'm hard pressed to find a genre, or major artists that I haven't at least sampled. Pabst, Murnau, Western, Musical, noir, etc.

I think like everyone I started out with moderate taste, if not bad taste. Going to a theater made everything special. Then you realize that not everything is good. Then you come to realize how narrative functions, etc. I tend to favor strong storytelling over performance. Or, that is to say, I prefer a film with a good story and pedistrian acting to vice versa.

Good stuff 'Dre. As always, a pleasure to read your musings.
Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein, A&C Meet The Invisible Man and Hold That Ghost! are all essential.
Passing on Always is a good thing. Passing on Flight of the Intruder is unacceptable, however.
Excellent, excellent stuff.
That was a great read. I think you nailed Star Trek better than any other criticisms/enthusiasms I've read since its release. Also, great shout out to Ball of Fire.

Can't really argue with any of those picks. Except maybe Femme Fatale, I just couldn't get into it.
Most interesting. For some reason, I assumed you'd have more obscure picks but it's mostly pretty high profile work.

I didn't know you held Battle Royale that highly. That's great. I was crazy about that movie for a couple years till the sequel kinda killed it. But why is Memento blacked out? Hehehe.

You made me wanna check out Sky High again.
Nice balance-- good to see stuff like Huckabees in there. I can't support Burn After Reading though.

I believe Dre defended Battle Royale (against Beaks?) for the "You Got It Wrong" column .

What's the difference between a great film and masterpiece? Some of the choices (The Host, Brick) feel, inmho, a little too slight to wear such a crown.

I wouldn't have pegged Dre for a O, Brother Where Art Thou? man. (Or Black Hawk Down). That's cool to see.

Again, there's probably more that should be on there. It was just me getting a list together in a hurry. I put on films I will watch and continue to watch. Brick and The Host are worth revisiting often.

I left off LOTR because I really hate King Kong, and I feel I might not hold the films in such high esteem with the passage of time. They are messy, and they are messy in the same ways of Kong. I'm sure they're still great, but I'm not ready to make that call. I probably left off a lot of foreign films that I've forgotten about, but love.
great list... I would have added Stephen Chow's work of Shaolin Soccer 2001 and Kung Fu Hustle. 2004?

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who loves The Prestige.

THE NEW YORK FUCKING TIMES: "A few years ago, the film-geek Web site Chud.com posted a hoax review of a lost masterpiece from Clint Eastwood and Sam Peckinpah: a stripped-down and brutal take on Batman that abandoned every aspect of the mythos except the vigilantism and the car. Only the fact that this movie never existed keeps it from being my favorite superhero film of all time"

If I had a genie lamp, making that film real would be one of my three wishes.
