The NEW Would-Be Screenwriters Thread

Well, the original thread I started appears to have been swallowed whole in the revamp, which makes me very sad, as there was a lot of great stuff in there. Hopefully, we can rebuild the sucker here, or at least resume the discussion.

My second screenplay is giving me an ulcer. I've gotten to the point where I've jotted down every scene on 3x5 cards, but the actual writing is flummoxing me. I think the problem may be that it's such a strange idea that I can't picture the actual movie in my head. As odd as my first story may be, it was still basically a horror movie, and I could clearly see it.

My question for you guys is this: would it be better to push through my issues and force the thing out, or shelve what I've got for the time being, and start up something else? I've never quite had this problem before.

Edit:
A reminder, or for new readers, a clarification: my first screenplay grew out of the concept of a serial killer hunting vampires. In the writing, of course, it morphed into something a little more complex than that basic germ, but the idea is still there. Though some large ideas grew out of it, they remained mostly off-screen, and it wound up staying a fairly small, intimate affair, and was something I could easily see in my mind's eye. The new story is considerably more epic, large-scale, potentially bank-breaking, and rather odd, mixing comedy and large-scale action in a way that I don't think I've seen much. Ghostbusters comes to mind.

I don't know if this is the right advice or not, but I'll tell you what I've noticed about my own writing:

The ones where I struggle and struggle and push through my issues and force the thing out, as well-intentioned as they are, don't turn out as good as the ones where I'm having fun writing every scene.

Not saying there isn't a time & place for hard work and gutting it out. I'm just saying, the times I'm in sync with my script are the times I think I do better writing.

That's my two cents.

I am not sure what you should do. Maybe shelve it for a bit and let it churn around for a while.

The old would be screenwriters thread is there by the way it just thinks it's been over a month since it's been posted in so it's sunk off the first page, tell the forum to show from the beggining and it's there.

A-ha! So nevermind then. I'll go back there.

I've had different experiences with just trying to get an actual word on paper. When I'm at a computer, I've always had the problem with focusing too much on every little detail, grammar, spelling, and the structure of whatever it was I'm writing. Because of this I would nary get a lot on the page.

I find it easier writing free-hand in a composition book or a legal pad before hitting the Final Draft because it just helps me get SOMETHING on paper instead of just focusing on the details. Sure it'll probably read like shit, but that's what re-writes are for.

My advice is to just start writing, no matter what, even if it doesn't make a lot of sense. The details of your story will come out in time, and you'll be able to make additions and subtractions based on what is written already.

Also, get a really small pocket sized notebook, to jot down little details as they come to you during the day. Even if they are a few words, at least they're out of your head and able to reference later as you progress.

Don't know if that helps, but good luck.
