No not a place for people feeling sad, but a place for people who blu them selves early. People who enjoy their HD now, 1080p and DTS HD.

Sadly we lost the format war thread, and with WBs switching, the war seems to be coming to a close.

Hopefully there are some people here who went blu and didn't look back. Okay lets get some semblance of purpose here.

One of the greatest movies of all time finally gets a HD treatment. Good old 20th Century Fox can usually make a nice disk (god bless them for DTS MA on all their discs, but curse them to hell twice over for screwing up multiple franchises)

Here's a dumb question...what kind of receiver do you need in order to utilize the "pure HD" sound or whatever it's called? A 7.1 system? I can't find any receivers in my local establishments that actually have the ol' "PureHD" logo or any such thing on them. Oh, and...

Well there are lots of receivers that can take advantage of the sounds.

7.1 right now is the best, of course, but then it depends on your blu-ray player what to get from there.

Onkyo probably has the most cost effective with their 605 unit being around $400. It can decode everything, and your player will have to bitstream the info to it. If you're using a PS3, you use PCM, let the player do the decoding, and then it will send it to the receiver to play.

The new panasonic blu rays can bit stream DTS HD to receivers but so far other old players can't.

Sadly when it comes to blu, you have multiple profiles (1.0, 1.1, 2.0) and the PS3 is the only one to be able to update to all of them. Owners are crossing their fingers for internal DTS-HD decoding.

I'm only 1080i.

Every bloody day I wish i'd waited a few months longer and bought a 1080p TV for the same price.

But no. I bought a PS3 and needed high-definition immediately.

That makes me a sad panda.

With Best Buy announcing a switch to blu-ray exclusivity, its about time the war ends now. Because if it doesn't, downloads might start to steal some steam. Of course prices need to get cheaper fast not only on the hardware, but the prices. The new enemy is DVD. Since Sony has such a hold in Hollywood, I wouldn't be surprised if they start to release less on DVD.

That won't happen for a long time. Too many people have DVD players and Blu-Ray players are still too expensive for a lot of people. To not release movies on regular DVD will mean losing a lot of money for the company.

True, although I could see Sony and others holding back on Super Special Extended Multi-Disc versions for regular DVD and reserving that for Blu-Ray. Might save them some manufacturing costs by only having to produce 1 Blu-ray disc (vs. 2 regular DVDs) plus start nudging the movie fans that give a shit about that stuff in the right direction.

I hadn't planned on replacing any of my current DVDs with blu-ray, but The Adventures of Baron Munchausen could change that.

Agreed, given the amount of time it took for VHS to die I dont think DVD will just go away overnight. Itll be around for a long time to come. I mean I just got my parents to unplug their vcr and replace it with a dvd player this christmas so Id think the average person, though probably not as slow on the uptake as my folks, plans to keep the format they have for as long as they possibly can.

I ended up getting Casino Royale again on an impulse (it was on sale for $13). Plus the fact, living abroad, I could have the DVD, and when back home I could watch the blu-ray.

I actually slowed down buying DVD movies a good year or so before I got the PS3 so I didn't have to replace them later.

I can't wait to own Heat some day. I've been holding back on the DVD for so long.

I actually just watched Blade Runner: The Final Cut on Blu-ray last night and it was great. The 5.1 track really sounded good. I haven't watched any of the other special features on the other 4 discs though so I don't know if I'll ever make it through those.

A mixed bag for sure, but they had limited choices, and all FREE. I did plunk down the cash for The Rock on Blu. Worth every penny.

I can't wait to get my hands on Blade Runner final cut.

Electrichead, you may have to get your copy of pirates replaced due some weird framing issues with the movie. I know disney had some # to call, and they could tell you if your copy was affected.

Well, my mom got me an 80 GB Playstation 3 this past weekend, so... guess I'm Blue-Ray now.

No HD TV's in my apartment, though, so... yeah.

They've been bundling BR players with Sharp HDTV sales the last few weeks. Smart move on both sides (Sharp and BR). I'm this close my next big ass purchase (a Sony HDTV) which if I pull the trigger on my next buy after that is a dual HD/BR player.

Starship Troopers is actually already available in BR in the UK. But I think they decided to hold it back here because they're getting ready to release Starship Troopers: Marauders on DVD.

A side question about these older films. When they are transfered or encoded into the Blu-Ray format, what is the process? Do they really turn it into true HD like a newer film would be.

I compared The Rock 1080i against the 480i version from satellite, and there are big differences, but I was wondering if the quality is as good as a brand new film would be on BRD.

I'm not sure in some cases. I watched "Fifth Element" on BR, and I could definitely tell a difference in the quality, and I watched the Donner cut of Superman II this weekend, and it looked great. The only thing I noticed was, during most of the added back scenes in the Fortress of Solitude, my screen seemed to fade in and out a bit. Not flicker so much, but it was like someone was running the contrast up and down. Didn't notice it on the other scenes, though.

I have not been disappointed by anything I've watched so far, whether it be BR or HD-DVD.

I don't think they bother to put it through 4k or even 2k digital intermediate (if that's what you meant), but I'm pretty sure they take a film element of some sort - be it the original negative or an interpositive - and master it in 1080p. From there, they choose a codec to compress the video so it will fit on a blu-ray disc.

Could someone explain why stuff like :

..is on blu-ray... but movies like Heat, Last of the Mohicans aren't ?!!

Even the special edition transfer of Heat from 2 years ago isn't that great. It's serviceable i suppose, but it at least needs a remaster!

Early adopters with decent taste in horror clamor plenty. Sorry to derail.

I just found out that Premiere Pro with CS3 can encode Blu-Ray and that made me super excited (like, super duper). Now I just have to find a Blu-ray burner I can get without selling my car. I wish Apple had some sort of more concrete Blu-ray support this year.

I enjoyed the Devil's rejects. I just don't think it's a prime candidate for Blu-ray, when there are other movies which are. The Blu-ray resources could be put to better use.

I won't complain that the Devil's Rejects is on Blu-ray. I like the movie, and I got it for free.

But why Devil's Rejects and not, say, Lawrence of Arabia? I'd guess that someone thought more early adopters would buy The Devil's Rejects. I'd also guess that alot of studios want to have a larger user base before they release some of those AAA titles. They want that quick return that a big first week yields.

According to this site, Heat is coming out on blu-ray with a new 1080p transfer supervised by Michael Mann. You'll have to scroll down a bit to find the info. Doesn't give a release date or anything but it's something to look forward to.

Wow, I was this close to buying my dad a $100 HD-DVD player for Christmas with a Netflix subscription for a couple months. I thought that they'd be one of the longer hold outs. I'm really glad I didn't do that now.

If this means they'll start stocking more copies of Blu-ray movies though, I'm all for it.

Well Paramount got $150 mil, and it seems there is a chance they might have to go back to being blu. I see it as a decent situation.

In the case of Universal, may that pie be the Bourne Trilogy. That would be a good pie indeed.

Back To The Future Blu-berry is my favorite pie. They better be cooking it up.

And (refering to Russ's article) the Indy movies are Spielberg's so I'm pretty sure we'd be seeing them on Blu regardless.

If the discs were in a flux capacitor looking package, I'd buy it right away. Hell even manure. I hate manure.

So I guess Star Wars, Indy, and Godfather Trilogy will hopefully get their release now in HD (Death Star, Fedora Hat, and Dead Horse keep cases respectively).
