The Semi Official Blu-Ray Thread - Page 27

I thought I heard that part of that was due to the rental market. Basically, why let someone rent one disc with 12 episodes when you can get them to rent three times. Not that the rental market is as huge of a deal nowadays. Come to think of it, I'm surprised Netflix hasn't pushed for more episodes per disc since it would mean less warehouse space for them and reduced shipping costs.

Yeah right.
You might be able to if the show was in SD. Apparently it's about a 6:1 ratio from SD to BD, so if you can get about 3 hours of HD content on a BD-50, you should likewise be able to get about 18 hours of SD content. More or less.

Shitter. Double post.

Just rented Jennifer's Body and Inglorious Basterds on bluray today, looking forward to checking them out.

RE: Multiple discs. It's all in the audio formats and compression used. That audio is one hell of a space hog.

You move into a bigger house, think you're getting more space. You end up just buying bigger furniture to put in it.

And a pool. And some hookers.

Technology makes things easier and faster. You just end up either procrastinating and/or messing with stuff more.

Ends up taking the same amount of time.

Oh, human nature!

So how bout that Back to the Future prank that actually led to news that the franchise is finally coming to blu?

On the multiple discs front, I may be a minority (well being an Indian I'm used to it), but I love the upgrade in sound and picture. 3D I'm not to hyped for till it can be done without glasses. I mean it was done great for Avatar, but how will one get used to wearing those bloody glasses for casual TV watching? Everyso once a while, its cool, but it needs to get a lot more practical.

Just in time for a fancy 25th Anniversary Edition.

Just picked up Fight Club on blu.. you guys were right, this soundtrack is kicking my ass! The film has a beautiful grain to it which is perfect for the tone of the film.
Speaking of grain: Watching Ghostbusters on Blu now. I know there's a prettier looking source out there, but something about the grain adds such a specific feel to the film that a crystal clear image just would not provide, and yet it's still obviously an HD picture. It feels like the 80s without feeling like the 80s in the "Everyone's got terrible hair" sense. I know people have bitched; for me, it's kinda perfect.
Whaaa? I got Ghostbusters on blu-ray. It looks absolutely perfectly fine! Who's doing the bitching?

Is it wrong that I'm probably going to pick up Ten Things I Hate About You tomorrow?

It looks pretty good, if that makes a difference to you. I still haven't got around to that review yet.

You are right, the film looks beautiful, some grain sure but it's an old movie. I also picked up Braveheart, which looks amazing as well! It's not a crystal clear image but the colors pop like none other! Anyone here have Batman 89'?

And does Gladiator really have that bad of a transfer?
I got Batman 89... bought the collection on an impulse. Kinda regret it. Hahahah. Oh well. I'll give it a look and post again. WB is pretty good with nice/natural transfers, right? I'm gonna assume that it's like Ghostbusters in that it's true to the source (that hasn't been given a major restoration).

About Gladiator... I haven't seen the transfer myself, but everything I read about it says that your reaction to it will really depend on how much of a stickler you are for a faithful transfer of the original film. Most consumers wouldn't notice enough to care.

Yes. Your DVD upconverted looks almost exactly the same. I clicked between them on my set, and if it wasn't really damn close I don't know what is. The edge enhancement is obnoxious.
Batman 89 looks pretty damned nice on my new 50 inch plasma.

From blu-ray.com... a very reasonable judgment, I'd say.

Batman
Rating: 3.5/5

Considering it's the oldest film in the anthology, Tim Burton's 1989 original Batman features a fairly impressive 1080p/VC-1 transfer that looks startlingly better than previous standard DVD releases. The director's palette has never been bold or colorful, but his drab tones are faithfully reproduced with stable hues and natural skintones. Contrast is bright and pleasing to the eye and, even though the image appears flat on more than one occasion, depth is more convincing than its ever been before. Detail also receives a notable boost. Granted, soft shots and quite a few hazy textures prevent the presentation from living up to its potential, but the overall results are strong enough to satisfy fans of the film. Thankfully, artifacting, source noise, grain spiking, and banding are kept to an absolute minimum. I suspect minor noise reduction has been applied to the transfer, but I didn't encounter the waxy faces or distorted backgrounds that signal an overzealous application. The experience wasn't as jaw-dropping as I was expecting, but it still managed to satiate my appetite for a solid high definition catalog release.
Thanks Gabe! You saved me $14.99! I was really hoping that movie would have been amazing on Blu!

I had hope that Ghostbusters was going to get remastered.. But I still love the transfer.

Thanks Mcnooj! Once the price is lowered I'll pick it up. I love me some Batman

I just heard that Disney is finally remastering Gangs of New York. Unfortunately I don't like it quite enough to buy it again.

I thought I read somewhere it was just the old disc with a new, fancy-ass slipcover.

Pretty sure it's a whole new transfer. It's called the remastered edition.
Just came in here to bitch about something:

I don't know if it's Universal's menu system, my PS3 or some combination of the two, but once the screensaver hits, its kind of annoying that nothing will get it back into playback mode except for the Top Menu button on my PS3 remote. Neither Play or Pause work.

Well, that, and every time my PS3 changes screen resolutions or loads a Blu, my TV goes on the fritz and I have to turn it off and on again. The quirks keep piling on, making want to get a new TV.
The screensaver thing might be Universal's menu system being an ass. I don't have the remote, and pressing X on the controller is the only thing that brings back the movie, despite the fact that I used Start to pause it in the first place.

As for the PS3 resolution thing, that's definitely your TV. Though the PS3 picking a fucking resolution and sticking with it no matter what's in the drive would be delightful, wouldn't it?
My friend's plasma goes on the fritz randomly when it has to switch between resolutions as well. I thought it was due to the HDMI switch he has to use (his TV doesn't have enough HDMI ports...), but I guess that's not always the case, eh?

It's ESPECIALLY annoying when not all features on a blu-ray aren't in HD. Gotta turn the TV on and off.

No kidding. What's weird/annoying is that all SD content played through my PS3 (like DVDs) reverts back to 480p instead of upscaling. (I wonder if changing the video output settings would fix that but I almost can't be bothered to fiddle around and test it all out.) Honestly, DVDs on my Oppo look so much more filmic (art school word) that I'm inclined to keep it around mostly for that reason. Also, it doesn't cause the HDCP to lose its shit every time I put in a new disc.

I dunno if its just a ps3 thing, but I have a fairly decent 3 yr old Sony hdtv and the screen still flickers when the resolution changes. Lets add on top of that my receiver likes to make a clicking noise when your also change sound format, so its really heard when you go from menu to video (like the movie or special feature).

Once the movie starts though I usually forget about it, but for some reason in games its a lot more apparent.

My receiver sounds like somebody dropped a microphone on a hardwood floor when it switches. When it's night time and I'm using headphones, not a big deal. When it's day time, I'm alone, the volume is up, and I'm in the mood to watch X2, not so much.
About the PS3 upscaling DVDs... that's actually a good point. I took for granted that the PS3 is supposed to do this, but now I can't remember if I put a DVD in and have the TV show that it's playing in 1080p or not.

SD features on blu-rays get taken down to 480 60Hz for sure. But I can't remember what it listed for an actual DVD. I should check on that when I get home.

Actually I have derived a small benefit from the click. While my TV is turning on, I have to hit the input button quite a bit. I know I'm on my PS3 input when the receiver clicks on that channel. Hope I didn't give an excuse to Onkyo and Sony to label it as an undocumented feature.

edit: Yeah the PS3 can upscale DVDs, and there is some setting because I remember using it for a little bit before just using my standalone to keep the laser from wearing out. That said: http://www.myps3.com.au/Post.aspx?id=5522

There is a setting under the "Video Output" labeled as BD/DVD Upscaler you might want to check out. There's the options of having it set at Off, Double Scale, Normal, and Full Screen. I've always left mine at normal and the DVDs I've played look better on my PS3 than upscaled on my last DVD player that allegedly upscaled discs.

On a separate note, a couple of weeks ago I set up my new slim PS3, and everytime it starts up the screen flickers like crazy for a one to two minutes. It seems like once the system warms up the flickering stops.

I have a HDMI cable linked up between the system and my television, but its not a cable issue (as my 40gb PS3 doesn't have this issue). As its been colder than a witch's tit here for the last few weeks, I'm guessing it has something to do with the cold temperature and the system warming up, but it is kind of irritating.
My PS3 Slim will randomly start popping with the audio as well as the video. I'll be on the XMB menu and the bottom half of the screen will pop white with the audio giving me an accompanying sound to go with it. It's distressing! I turn the system off and on and the popping goes away.
The PS3 definitely upscales DVDs (I have mine set to upscale to 1080p). I don't remember where the setting for that is. It doesn't just hold one resolution/video connection the whole time though (like the 360 does). This leads to problems with HDCP handshaking which is most of the issues you guys are seeing.

And the PS3 doesn't have a dedicated scaling chip like the 360 where it takes all output and scales it to some resolution all the time. I have my 360 set to 1080p and it even sends games that are obviously 720p to the TV as 1080p. I kind of like that the scaling doesn't happen until the TV with the PS3. I do get tired of waiting for it to adjust to the new resolution though.

I used to have the same problem with my TV randomly not working when I put a Blu-ray or something in. What I used to have to do was switch to a different input source and then back to the PS3 1 or more times. The last resort was physically unplugging the HDMI cable. Since I picked up my Onkyo 607 and run my PS3/360/TiVo through it I don't see any issues.
In the menu, when you're playing a DVD, there's an AV setting in the Triangle menu that allows you to set upscaling options as well.

Did the theatrical version of Miami Vice ever come out in HD format? I love the way the theatrical cut simply opens in the club. I can't see that in HD? C'mon!

Yeah. I think I still might have it.

It was a big mess with the DVD release. Don't know if it's ever getting straightened out for the next-gen format.

I was wondering the same thing last week. I love the way the film opens straight into the action and the title and credits only appear at the very end. Miami Vice is one of the few DVDs I was gonna re-purchase in Blu-ray but I guess I won't if only the director's cut is available.

I just saw the theatrical cut of Miami Vice on DVD for $5 somewhere. Should I go back and get it?

The Criterion one?
Damn, I wish some of the Best Buys around my area broke street dates for criterion releases. How much did Che cost there? I've had a copy pre-ordered from Amazon since it was announced, and its currently $33.99.
It was $45 which I guess is the price you pay to get something early. It seems like the only street dates my Best Buy ever breaks is usually for Criterions. I also saw 8 1/2 there too.
It's surprising they don't have something set up in their computer system to flag them when a product's street date is broken. I wasn't able to purchase a blu-ray disc at Target the one time I found a copy of something placed on the shelves early.

Both versions were released on the same date and were sold side-by-side. I don't know if now one version or the other as been discontinued.

There used to be, or so I was told one time. I was in a Sam Goody years ago and on the counter was a stack of Izzy Stradlin's bands CD. One of my friends tried to purchase it, but was told by the clerk that if he scanned it and the sale was finalized the label had the right to hold back future shipments of new albums once it saw that the store had broken street.

When I worked for a music store (Turtle's!) years and years ago, one of my managers used to make it his priority to bust stores for breaking street date. There was a store in the mall ("Castle Records" or something like that--not Tower) that used to do it all the time. He busted them for breaking street date on the 2nd Europe album (yeah, it was the late 80s) and the Prince album Lovesexy. He said the punishment from the label was they wouldn't receive new product from that label until the day of release, or sometimes days later. We caught WalMart doing it as well, but they pulled the product back off the shelf before we could buy a copy. Don't remember the album, though.
Wal-mart used to break street dates all the damn time.
