I dunno, but I thought that was kind of the point.

Mixing up the formula bit is ok by me.  It was a gamble to make the cast a bunch of pricks.  For some people it didn't work, for some it did.  Personally (and obviously) I am a big fan of Alien 3.  It isn't Alien, but it's on par with Aliens for me in that neither are incredible, but they both embody the spirit of the first, while trying to be their own beast.  Although I dig Aliens, I find it a bit overrated.  While I am currently ruining what miniscule credibility I had, I might as well say I enjoy Alien Resurrection too.  Not remotely as much as the first three, but at the same time, for the same reason - it tries to be its own beast.  Of course, it fails on many more levels and really misses.  But fuck it.  I like it anyway.

No worries, wd40: I am fascinated with Alien 3 and love me the shit out of it. The style/tone Fincher stamped on it, even in the midst of all the trouble it went through, still shines through the cracks and I love the bits I get to taste.

Motherfuck an Alien Resurrection, though.

I do think they filmed the best film they could.  Given what Fox was doing behind the scenes, and the other scripts that were turned in (I'm a huge fan, have almost ever script version printed and bound in hard back at home for each film).  I just don't like the characters.  They set up what should be a remarkable finale, with characters sacraficing themselves in order to destroy the creature, but the film fails because you just don't care who dies and who survives, minus Dillion and Ripley.  The extended cut is much better then what was released theatrically, minus the inclusion of the "Oxe Birth".  I liked the idea of it spawning from a dog, and that seems to fit the overall design of the Alien better.

The part that gets me everytime, is the alien eggs in the beginning of the film.  Anyone who watched the climax of Aliens, can tell you there is no way those eggs could have got on board.  We saw how the alien lifecycle begins, so there is no way within the context of the film, those eggs should have been there.  Also, they show only ONE egg, and yet, there are two facehuggers?  You really have to ignore a lot to be able to accept the premise of the film.

To me, the series is called Alien, not Ripley.  They could have easily taken the series in a whole new direction after the second film, and should have after the third film.  Resurrection is SO bad, i don't like to even accept it's existence.  I'm glad to see Ridley going back to square one, and taking this series in new direction that doesn't involve mindnumbingly bad "crossovers" with other movie monsters.

Gotcha.  I respect that.  I suppose I shrug off a lot of the flaws in the logic and enjoy the movie in spite of them.  I just like the pacing, the mood, the effects and the efforts to try something new again.  With the production turmoil that flick went through, I am surprised anything works.

I echo your sentiments about the birth, as well as the extended cut, but I hate the ending.  Of anything that changed, I hate that they changed that ending.  It pisses me off to no end.

Funny thing, the last 2 weeks I've gone into my local Target....Alien and Aliens have been sold out, while Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection looked like they've maybe sold 2 a piece.

Same here, at Target, Wal Mart, Best Buy and KMart.... My brothers B-Day is coming up, and he just got a Blu Ray player, so I wanted to get him Alien and Aliens on Blu Ray.  Couldn't find it anywhere.

The Alien Blu Ray is soooo STUNNING.  It was like watching a new film.

Best Buy is releasing the original Taking of Pelham One Two Three on May 29th! I know what one of my birthday presents will be.

Glad I got the Alien boxset when I did, because the behind the scenes of Alien3 is just pretty great.

Ditto on Alien looking drop dead gorgeous, I mean it's my new black test... (no racism)

...and Aliens looks pretty decent as well.

I've hit a stall period on purchases. I feel a little burned on 3D blus. I like to have the best version available, but not a fan of 3D at home.  Love being OC.

Netflix is keeping me happy for now.

As soon as summer hits, I ussualy don't buy any films.  I'm either too busy with work, stuff outside, or being suckererd into seeing some summer blockbuster.

Just pre-ordered the Coen Brother's True Grit on Blu-Ray. If Amazon is as great as they usually are, it should be here the day before it comes out. My mother never got a chance to see it, and I'm itching to see how it looks. Color me excited!

Once Upon a Time in the West dropped this week on blu. Gorgeous.

Not only that it's on Amazon right now for 10.49

The French Phantom of the Paradise blu ray is region free and the print is unbelievably clean. Also has a 45 minute featurette which interviews all principal cast, De  Palma, the DP, the editor, and the producer. Pretty comprehensive and I devoured the whole thing tonight. (Content is the same as the Region 2 French 2-disc DVD, but never saw the film in HD before. So great looking.) Ended up being a bit under 40 with shipping, but worth it as a fan.

Back to the Future Trilogy for $25 (on Amazon) is really tempting. Might be an after exams gift.

I got the BTTF Trilogy on DVD... any reason to upgrade?  I really only like the first film, the other two not so much.

The docs alone justify that set several times over, but yeah, it's a pretty huge jump over the DVDs.

Apparently, Target will have the BTTF Blu for 15 bucks starting Sunday, if anyone wants to wait...

Josey Wales Blu Ray looks pretty good.  Will be picking that up today for myself, and for my father for Father's Day.

I'm excited for the talking of Jurassic Park and Jaws on Blu-Ray. Of course we wont see the shark on blu untill 2012, but I can live with that.

Jurassic Park *never* got a proper treatment on DVD. I'm almost more excited for that.

It did not. I would love to see what else is added to this disk.

Or at least the rest of this scene from the first one if we can't get that.

August 30th: Miller's Crossing, Blood Simple and Raising Arizona. Yup...calling in sick that day.

Great Scotts!

Got the Back to the Future Trilogy for $20 @ Target.

Digital copies still there!

Oh and rumor has it, it'll drop to $15, so price match.

Just got Back to the Future trilogy and True Grit(Coen brothers not John Wayne)  for $15 bucks a piece at Target. Seems they are selling those 2 and The Fighter for $15 for today.

Yeah did a price match. My target sucks in selection so I grabbed the last Back to the Future.

If Target is out of Back to the Future, just bring the ad into Best Buy. They will match the price. It's what I did.

And yes, Target will be out of Back to the Future, so just cut your loses and go to Best Buy with the ad.

Target also has the blus of Kill Bill Vols. I and II on sale for $7.99 each.

I wish I had known about that Best Buy trick; I had to hit up three different Targets in order to snag BTTF.

This is such a nitpick... I'm watching the Alien Bluray and was curious if there was a way to watch/listen to the Jerry Goldsmith alternate audio tracks without the Track title pop up being on screen.

I miss Laser Discs. (not really)

I took the Target BTTF ad to Best Buy to price match.  Unfortunately, I just tore (what I thought to be) off the relevant portion of the ad to put in my pocket.  The check-out girl said that she couldn't price-match because there was no date on the piece of the ad I brought with me.  Heheheh.  Live and learn.

Of course, I bought the trilogy back when it came out.  But it's just too good a deal to pass up.  Was gonna have it as a back-up to give someone as a gift.

The check out girl could have looked it up, but hey...customer service seems lacking at most places.

Yeah, I didn't feel like making a big deal out of it.  I just said thanks and left.

True, you already own a copy no harm no foul.  I would have done the same thing you did though, just bought a few to stock up on and give them away as gifts.

I assume that's why all of the sets were gone from all of the Targets I visited at around 9:00 this morning.

Coupon for $5 off a Blu-ray (or DVD) that's $14.99 or higher at Best Buy:

http://www.fatwallet.com/static/attachments/93232_coupondisplay.pdf

It says "Markdowns taken from regular prices" but judging by the DVDtalk forums it seems a lot of folks are having it work on sale items as well. I took one with me to Best Buy today to see if I could nab the BTTF trilogy for $10. But once I had them price-match it down to $15 I pussed out and didn't even try the coupon. Deep down I figured $15 was a sweetheart deal and just left it at that.

What's the matter, Moltisanti!?  CHICKENNN?!?!?

(thanks for the link!)

I was already paying for it with a gift card so I just wasn't in the mood to be Mr. Stickler at the register. Eh I'll try using it one day this week and see if I can score TRUE GRIT for $10.

For what it's worth, Best Buy also has a big display of Lionsgate flicks on Blu for $6, many of which are not a part of the similar $6 display at Wal-Mart. Here's a list:

Bad Lieutenant
Basic Instinct
Chaos
Crash
First Blood
High Tension
House of 1000 Corpses
Kickboxer
King of New York
Lord of War
Rambo III
Rambo: First Blood Part II
Red Heat
Repo! The Genetic Opera
Requiem for a Dream
Reservoir Dogs
Stargate
The Blair Witch Project
The Descent
The Ninth Gate
The Punisher
War
Wonderland
Young Guns

Target is terrible with their stock. I'm sure many of the stores had about 10 on hand if that.

Well I called ahead, I'd gladly pay $20 for it. With stock being shitty, I just decided to go mid-day and get it. Then I heard about it being 15, so money saved.

I try to do the same on black friday. Pick it up while it's in stock and then go price match. Sadly companies picked up on this.

Sherlock Holmes $7.99 might be another pick up later at Target.

Oh and Best Buy is full of stupid people. Esp when I get a talk about how much better monster hdmi cables are. I swear they go into such a robotic regurge, that I could take a shit right there, and they wouldn't notice till they continued to walk after me.

I got in trouble for giving a customer advice (I wore a blue polo that day, so got asked a question thinking I work there).

Thanks for the heads up fellas I got the last copy of BTTF and grabbed True Grit as well. I see Amazon has finally price matched now I sort of wish I waited but actually not because Target had the deal.

such a perfect time for all these to go on sale.  My Fathers day list is full now.

Shot and scored. Now to print out a few more.

Thanks for the heads up, everyone. Managed to score First Blood, Blair Witch, Dogma, Descent and Punisher for $6-$7 a pop then used the coupon for the combo House/Rejects. Got 7 Blu's for about $7 a pop.
