There are some samples on the hi-def 'Story of Pixar' that comes on the Wall-E disc. They all look great, especially Nemo. Apparently Pinoccio is the next classic release.

It is. I don't have the next six down by memory. But, WDHE sent out a press release about it back in October.

That brief bit of TRON had me drooling.

Went to Walmart at 7am and managed to snag the very last $128 Blu-ray player. It's a Magnavox, but it's Profile 1.1, so I'm not gonna be picky.

Missed out on the $15 Iron Manand Indy Blu-rays.

Picked up some fantastic deals on Amazon during Black Weekend. I haven't seen MAD MEN but $16.99 on Blu and the metric ton of recommendations were enough for a blind purchase.

Boo-fucking-hiss.

According to Beyond Media Online, Planet Terror has one special feature:

One feature found on the Blu-ray that is not available on any of the DVD releases is the addition to remove the degraded look of the print titled ‘Scratch Free’. For those that may not like the Grindhouse look of the film, you can turn it off at any time. The print is pristine with the ‘Scratch Free’ feature on. Colors are more vibrant and bold. With a much cleaner print, black colors are much bolder and details are better defined.
Well shit, with Planet Terror at least, it would remove the pretension.

Iwo and Flags are stunning BDs. Insanely good looking. Flags' opening battle sequences are incredible.

Luckily the real Canadian superstore is having a sale this week for the BDP-S350 for an easy $199.99. My plan of action is to get it price matched at Futureshop and get it there where it comes with 3 free movies, sell them and skin a little more off the cost, by the tail end it'll have cost me a very spiffy $150.

And then it'll be a night of Kubrick movies in glorious HD.

So yeah... I dove into Amazon's Blu-Ray deal and got a Samsung P1500, Batman Begins, Speed Racer, Constantine, V for Vendetta, and 2-Day shipping all for $239. Seems like a pretty sweet-ass deal, and I'm excited.

Three boxes arrive today. One contains the Blu-Ray movies (all there), one contains a Samsung P1500 Blu-Ray player, and one...... contains a Samsung P1500 Blu-Ray player.

I check my order history, order status, tracking status, and my online banking... nothing extra or out of the ordinary. Suffice to say; somebody done fucked up but good.

I have to wonder how this shit happens.

This must be true, but I can't imagine the Amazon warehouse isn't computerized out the balls.

True dat.

Okay, so I won't have my HDTV back till Thursday.

In the mean time, I've hooked up the player to a normal ole SD CRT-TV. Am I making it up, or is it making this TV look better too? Speed Racer looks fucking sharp on this TV. I assume its the power of suggestion, but cramming this TV with more resolution than it can handle can't hurt.

Yes, yes, a thousand times yes! This was the second Blu-Ray I watched on my new 40" 1080p Toshiba and Christ was it beautiful. I've never been more happy with a purchase in all of my life. The TV is beautiful and between TDK and now The Godfather, I am more than confident it can handle any black-levels like a champ.

What a beautiful way to watch a movie.

What should I watch next?

EDIT: Beautiful
Letters from Iwo Jima. It's gorgeous.

Make sure your TV's calibrated up to the nines though - this thing gets bleak and grainy, so make sure you're not crushing any blacks.

Sounds like yours can handle it though.
2001.

A 40 year old movie with that many special effects has no business looking that good.

If you want picture quality, go for I, Robot. It's one of the best looking blu ray discs out there.
I'll get on both of those. I'm not going to argue with watching either of them, since they're both great.

I calibrated with the THX screens on the T2 disc, and I think it worked pretty well. I adjusted a bit when Gordon started crushing the hell out of my blacks in GF, but I think I've got it just right now. I'm excited to bust out the Kubrick's.

I also rented Master & Commander, which I have never seen before. That one look any good?

EDIT: I'll hit I, Robot too, though I'm a bit wary of that one.
Master and Commander looks amazing. Long as you're not interested in the features (which are all on the standard def 3-Disc), it's more than worth the money.
I, Robot's transfer is stunning. I'm not sure it warrants a repeat viewing just to see the benefits of a top notch BD transfer though.

Is there a BR disc to calibrate your set? Can I just use the old Avia or whatever it is disc that I used for my regular DVD player?

Wall-E has a setup feature on is. I'm not an audio/video quality pro, so not sure how good it is, but it seems to cover a lot. If you google search for video setting of your set, there are a few sights that list recommended setting for different models. It helped me as a base-line, then you can make adjustments based on the lighting of your room, etc.

Terminator 2 has the THX calibration feature. Wal-Mart and other stores are also selling it for <$10 around now.
Thanks for the tips guys, I'm gonna grab one.

Amazon claims the upcoming Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas Blu-ray is a "Director's Cut". I checked the runtime, and it's one minute shorter than the theatrical version. 118min. vs. 119min.

I Wonder what that's about.
So anyone pick up the Criterion BRs? Are they sex on toast or what? Particularly interested to hear thoughts on the transfer for The Third Man.
Beaver has there's up, also the rest of the Criterion's get a pretty good shake.

The Last Emperor looks like the biggest winner

that being said the Imax bits look completely insane on the Dark Knight

Sigh....... I need to graduate so a Kuro, can join my B&Ws along with a PS3l

Now that I'm the owner of a new BDP-S350, I walked home with it, set it up with the HDMI cable and....get a static hissing noise whenever the main menu starts up.

I googled it and got some similar experiences, I'm updating my firmware as I type this, is there some setting I need to turn off to get it not to hiss at me?

Hmm try a different cable, firmware, different hdmi jack.
Gonna switch out the living room hdmi cable with this one and hope both work when switched around. Firmware update did nothing and both hdmi jacks produced similar results.

Edit: 2nd hdmi cable yielded the same result.
Edit 2: I'll have to take it back once boxing day madness subsides, it works during movies but if I'm paying $240 for a player I'd rather it not have a single hiccup movie

Question. Any Schwarzenegger films worth getting on Blu-Ray? I have T2, which doesn't look that great, and I heard that Predator is not a good transfer. I saw Commando and Total Recall the other day and was wondering how those movies are. Any suggestions?
Chungking Express is breathtaking. It almost feels like a whole new film. I just pray Criterion does In the Mood For Love soon.

Edit: Days of Heaven wouldn't hurt either. I just bought the new edition last year, but I would definitely double-dip for that film.
After a day, the hissing seems to have gone away at random, which is nice I suppose. Now I can get down to enjoying my holidays with Kubrick on Blu-Ray.

Dunno if this was thrown out there but amazon uk has the 5-disc blu-ray set of Planet Earth for £25. My order came to $45 cdn when all was said and done.

Total Recall and Eraser both look pretty good. There's nothing in terms of extras on either.

Unsurprisingly, T3's gotten the best treatment so far.

Nice. I actually like the movie but I'm looking for something a little more bloody and a little less Sinbad.

Saw a bunch of Blu-ray 2-packs for $30 at Walmart today:

The Italian Job/Shooter
Cloverfield/Sleepy Hollow
Tomb Raider/The Ruins
Payback: Straight Up/We Were Soldiers
Patriot Games/The Sum of all Fears
Face Off/Next
Norbit/Drillbit Taylor

Toobad you can't mix and match.

Depending on your location, you might finding a few of them ringing up for 20 bucks.

I just picked up Trading Places / Coming to America for that price.

I was fortunate enough to receive Sweeney Todd and Tropic Thunder for Christmas from a friend. Todd looked great, rented Natural Born Killers to throw on next (Having never seen it before).

I'm about to take the plunge on the Sony S350 Blu Ray player in the next few weeks, does anyone have any recommendations on HDMI cables?

I'm basically looking for an HDMI cable of high quality, but not one that's ridiculously overpriced. I'm currently daunted by the plethora of cable options, so recommendations are appreciated.
There is absolutely, positively ZERO difference in picture/product quality between a $120 Monster HDMI cable and a $6 no-name brand one from EBay. ZERO.
I wish everyone was on to the whole Monoprice vs. Monster Cable thing. I don't ever talk to strangers, but I have told people that I see buying Monster Cables to please go home and buy them off the internet.
