Awesome, thanks! Hausu Blu-Ray, here I come!

LOL --- the Criterion website apparently couldn't handle the traffic generated from their own sale.

I managed to round out my Rambo collection through that Best Buy deal and scored the last one for $5.99. Also grabbed Cold Mountain for the same price, as an extra V-Day gift for the wife.

Just so people know, the movies in the Blu-Ray triple packs are NOT bare-bones. In many cases, they share the same extras as the DVDs (if not some new ones). Was very surprised today when I picked up the Friday 13th remake / Nightmare on Elm Street remake / Freddy vs. Jason today.

The Criterion website is still down? Anyone else having issues? Do you think they'll extend the sale if this continues?

It worked perfectly for me this morning. I received an email from them which read in part:

Quote:
Many of you were on Criterion.com at the same time trying to get your orders in on certain titles before we ran out of them, which caused a major site slowdown. To alleviate this pressure, after the sale ends we will announce a separate code to honor sale pricing on any titles that go out of stock.

The Looney Tunes Platinum Collection Limited Edition--as in the one with the animation cel and the shot glass and whatnot--is $34.99 on Amazon. Go. Now.

From Criterion:

Quote:
If there was something you wanted but you were unable to get your order through before our stock ran out, now’s your chance. We’ve set up a promo code that will allow you to backorder any title that went out of stock before the sale ended, and we'll honor the sale price. No need to rush to the site; the code will be active until 5 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, Thursday, February 16. Quantities are limited to one copy of each title/edition per customer. Please note that we cannot combine these backorders with previously placed orders.

Just enter the promotional code REDO on your shopping cart page at Criterion.com to apply the discount. Please bear in mind that the discount is only for backordered items (you will see a “Temporarily out of stock” message when adding them to your shopping cart). Please note it will take a few weeks for these items to be back in stock.

So story aside, Transformers 3D is the disc to get. It has a great P/Q, great 3D (not jaw dropping), amazing sound, and a decent amount of special features. Also it has a digital copy that you can get for UV (ugh) and iTunes (huzzah).

Story side, the movie really needed 30 min chopped out. Did like the fact they acknowledge that part 2 wasn't up to snuff.

Evil dead 2. 5.99. Yeeah!

Godfather Trilogy is on sale for $25 on Amazon right now!

Thanks! Thought for sure it would be $24.99 and I'd have to find something else to get for the free shipping. But nope, $25 on the dot.

I was just going to say that. Those assholes always pull that 1 cent crap forcing you to pay shipping or buying something for 5 or 6 bucks because what the hell is 3 dollars? Anyway yeah that is one hell of a deal, thanks Nooj!

Malkovich. Criterion. May 15th.

With a new commentary track from Gondry, evidently. Huh.

Nice!  MUST HAVE!

At first, I thought your brain slipped when you typed "Gondry."

Welp, time to unload that HD DVD finally.

"Conversation between John Malkovich and humorist John Hodgman"

Buh?

Good as purchased.

Complete Indiana Jones Collection announced for later this year. If I can own Alien Resurrection and Robocop 3 in collections, I guess I can ignore my Crystal Skull disc as well.

Yeah, but can you ignore TWO? Because that's the boat I'm in. Oy vey.

I adore Temple of Doom any time Short Round isn't speaking. It gets a pass from me.

Anyone who prefers Crusade to Temple is an objectively terrible human being.

Sean Connery > Short Round

Agreed, but Temple is just so much goddamn fun. Crusade is the stiffest of the three.

Oh, whatever, they're all fun. And if I think of Crystal Skull as an extra, it's a spectacular set!

Well guess who is a terrible human being?  This isn't to say I don't enjoy the hell out of Temple.  It just a little too mean and the supernatural element is too prominent for me.  Crusade is definitely lighter, but it's warmer, more cinematic and massive in scope for me.  Now, Crystal Skull?  Only seen it once.  I so badly wanted to like but too many of the little things bugged me.  I actually like a majority of the story.

Interestingly, I feel the exact same way about Die Hard as I do Indy.  The first is amazing.  The second, eh, I like just fine but it isn't the first.  The third works better than it should and manages to trump the second.  The fourth?  Well fuck the fourth.

They really shouldn't put The Indiana Jones Holiday Special in the set. It's available on it's own, that's good enough.

Harry Potter Wizards Collection 31 disc set announced. All Ultimate Editions, plus 5 hours of brand new extras, and a bunch of "collector" novelty junk.

Only $500!

It'll probably drop.

This is the collection I probably waited for. If they have something else under their sleeves, then I'll wait.

Hopefully. Anything over $200 seems egregious. I hate all the cheap collectable junk they put into these limited edition sets to jack up the price.

How the hell do they get 31 discs for eight movies? Does each book get four discs? That's outrageous!

Digital copies.  2D and 3D for the latter ones.  DVD versions.

There are 18 movie discs, and 13 special feature discs.

Who needs DVD, Blu-Ray and digital/3D copies? Jesus Christ, the movies aren't even that good. The set seems like it was made for someone who needs to be watching Harry Potter all the time.

I wouldn't mind two or three discs per.  It is supposed to be an ultimate set.  So a disc for each movie and then 1 or 2 bonus is fair.  For a massive collector's set, I don't need DVD or digital copy.  All I would like is for DH part 1 and 2 to be edited together.  It bugs me that a snippet of the first is tagged onto the beginning of the second.

It seems like a set made for the children of the wealthy. These insanity sets frighten me. Who has the disposable income to justify that purchase?

Right now sure, but I bet it drops significantly in the coming months.  As it stands, 16 bucks a disc is definitely pretty steep - especially since a large chunk of them are bonus only.

Enough about Harry Potter!  What about the fact that MI: Ghost Protocol's blu-ray transfer won't open up to 16x9 for the IMAX sequences!  Brad Bird's insistence, I guess...  It'll be 2.35:1 the whole way through.  Bird spouts some reasons, but it seems like it's just another way to double dip later on.

COME ON PEOPLE.  THIS IS A BIG DEAL!!!  HWOOAAAARG!

I saw it on a non-imax screen so I won't be missing anything from my first experience. Sorry for those of you that will :/

Just read this on The Digital Bits:

In other news today, it's apparently been confirmed by director Brad Bird that Paramount's 4/17 Blu-ray release of Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol will feature a shift to the intended IMAX aspect ratio for those scenes shot in IMAX format. Thanks to Bits reader Juan P. for the heads-up.

That's weird.  On his twitter feed, it looks like he's still defending the decision to not shift to IMAX on the video release.  What's going on?????

Ah, here's what happened:

From The Digital Bits:

Also, following my post yesterday there's been some confusion about the Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol Blu-ray aspect ratio, specifically regarding the scenes shot in IMAX. There were reports that director Brad Bird had said the Blu-ray would switch to full frame for the IMAX scenes. It turns out he was merely debating whether or not to do this via his Twitter feed. However, I've now checked directly with Paramount and have confirmed that the Blu-ray will feature widescreen only for all scenes in the film. Just FYI. Sorry for the confusion. This is what happens when I update "from the road", so to speak.

French Connection re-released.

http://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=8328

motherfuck.  I just bought one and two in the past six months.  If those images are truly legit, guess I am gonna have to rebuy it again.

Yeah, I heard they (meaning Friedkin specifically, I think) fucked up the last transfer hardcore.

The new transfer looks a bit unnaturally colorful.  Even moreso in comparison to the previous transfer.

It (the new transfer) does look slightly closer to the Five-Star DVD image than the current, wax-mannequin BD version.

As good as bought.

(Also love that Roizman is featured quite prominently in the blurb-copy.)
