Loving the current Criterion sale.  So far:

HAROLD AND MAUDE

HIGH AND LOW

THE SAMURAI TRILOGY

THREE OUTLAW SAMURAI

Really debating on the Chaplin films and a few others.

The Star Trek collection with the original crew is $39.99 this week at Amazon. $6.67 per film.

Lawrence of Arabia now official - 11/13!

[Editor's Note: Not five minutes after making this post, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment sent me their official press release for the Lawrence of Arabia: 50th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray release. As expected, the 3-disc collectible box set will street on 11/13. We've posted details of the extras previously, but the studio didn't confirm them in this press release. The film will also return to theatres around the country for a limited time as a digital-only theatrical event starting on 10/4. It will also be screened for one night only on Turner Classic Movies on 11/16. From the press release:

"We wanted to return this film to as pristine a condition as possible to honor its anniversary release," says Grover Crisp, EVP of Asset Management, Film Restoration and Digital Mastering for SPE. The original camera negative was scanned at 8K and the film went through a painstaking process of repairing problems inherent to the 50-year old film elements. Using the latest digital imaging technology, the color grading and re-mastering was completed in 4K at Colorworks, Sony Pictures Entertainments' digital intermediate facility. "The original negative was seriously damaged in a number of ways, some problems dating from the original release and some accumulated over the years." says Crisp. "But, until now, we did not have the tools available to address these issues. We think fans of the film will be as amazed as we are at the detail and resolution in the imagery captured by cinematographer Freddie Young to compliment David Lean's immaculate direction."

So there you have it! We'll post cover art as soon as it's available.]

The box for the set is absolutely stunning.

UK Peoples: Grave of the Fireflies and My Neighbor Totoro = November 12th.

In other news, I hate you all.

Man, what the fuck?

First, only about 15 copies of the Akira bluray were produced and now we don't even get Grave of the Fireflies?

Blu-ray.com gave the new Total Recall remastered blu a perfect score in video, audio and extras... so it sounds worth picking up.  Thank goodness since the previous versions looked like shit.

From that review:

Simply put, the presentation is outstanding, on par with what we typically see from Criterion

From Exhibit A of how not to make a bluray to Criterion quality disc means I'm finally going to be able to own Total Recall in HD!  Unless, of course, the American release sucks.

This year is the 50th anniversary of Carnival of Souls and if I do not get my Blu-ray special edition from Criterion I will burn down their fucking offices.

Jeepers Creepers is up for pre-order at Amazon.

Hmm, will I buy a fourth version of Total Recall? Probably, I watch it like once a year at least.

It does render all previous versions pretty much useless anyway.

Amazon has the Die Hard Collection for $22. Naturally, this occurs when I have no money.

$140 Blu-Ray package for E.T. (October release date)...wow.

10 year old me would have so much fun making the Ninja Turtles and Shredder fight over that thing.

30 year old me would have no such fun arguing with my girlfriend over that thing.

Interesting interview with William Friedkin over on the AV Club. Mostly about Killer Joe, but the second half goes into the legal state of Sorcerer (please let this get a good blu before I die) and mentions that crappy initial French Connection release.

God, that ET thing. That's somewhere near 'cosplaying as Sora from Kingdom Hearts' on the coolness spectrum.

Beat me to it.  Was just gonna post this.  Love that cover.

Blah.  The original cover they've been using for years now is one of the few shining examples of promo art from the 80s that holds up. Exploitation elements aside, the movie's way smarter than that new cover advertises.

Also great.  I like both a great deal and wouldn't mind both framed on my wall side-by-side.

I'd like to go on record that the new Total Recall transfer is, indeed, the shit, and that motherfucker was 8 bucks at Best Buy still.

I for one can't wait for the Jaws release....CAN NOT WAIT.

Yes.

Thats the one.

I used to have that Mars tin-packaged DVD awhile back and got rid of it. I think I'll go buy this and re-watch it for the first time in awhile instead of spending that money on the generic-looking remake.

The Jaws transfer is also getting very high marks.  E.T. blu in October, The Master, Django, Looper, Lincoln...gonna be a good year to be a film fan.

So I don't know how everyone feels about a Hatchet movies. I hated the first one but actually really enjoyed the second one. That is a good thing because Hatchet 2 is 3.69 right now on Amazon. That is the cheapest I have seen any blu-ray ever. And if you looking to grab the first one, it's only 5.69 on Amazon. Since Grosse Point Blank and High Fidelity are coming out tomorrow I just added it to my order to get some free shipping.

Ha ha, we watched my Red Planet Tin DVD version a few weeks ago.  Introduced my 10 year old son to it.  He kept thinking it would be scary...and then afterwards he said the scariest and funniest part was when their eyes started bugging out when they went outside of Mars.  And he proceeded to walk around the next day or two saying "AH GAH GAH AH GAH!"

Not a new blu-ray but I just discovered it so it's new to me. Apparently Brick has been out on Blu-ray in Canada for about a year or so now. The quality isn't bad at all actually. Unlike alot of Alliance discs the movie is framed correctly in 1:85:1 and has full DTS-HD-MA 5.1 sound. Only thing that kind of sucks is that all the special features from the movie are on the DVD that comes with it. They are all of the same features from the US DVD so I just popped the Alliance DVD out and put mine in. Cheapest I could find it was at deepdiscount.com. I try to hold off doing this kind of thing but Riann Johnson has asked Universal several times about releasing this and the official answer is "Noir doesn't do well on blu-ray". So I wouldn't count on a blu-ray anytime soon, which is odd because I would think they would when Looper hits.

They just announced the cover's reversible. PROBLEM SOLVED!

Both Amazon and Best Buy are selling the new The Royal Tennenbaums Criterion bluray for $19.99.

Jaws came to my house yesterday. I came shortly after because MY GOD what a beautiful disc. The transfer is gorgeous, right up there with Alien and Apocalypse Now.

Tenenbaums arrived as well. Hope to check that out tonight.

I agree, I'm short on time so I'm popping n the disc to check it out..It's beautiful, I don't want to leave it.

The Outland blu ray (the Sean Connery one) looks terrific, which is a relief, as the previous DVD contained an ugly, muddy transfer. Even though Hyams shot a film that relies mostly on low-light set-ups, the picture quality for the most part retains an impressive amount of detail, resulting in the best possible picture quality for this film. The film itself, a space-age riff on High Noon (designed deliberately to echo Alien's grimy, workman milieu - and featuring a score from Goldsmith), is pretty terrific, featuring a great, weary performance by Connery, and a deliciously slimy turn from Peter Boyle. Recommended.

Good to hear. Nabbed that a couple weeks ago but have yet to check it out. How's the Hyams commentary?

Anybody been in a Target today? Wondering what they're selling THE RAID for. So far the cheapest store price I've seen is $20 at BB.

Just watched the Tenenbaums Blu, and while I recall the film having vibrant color, I don't recall how orange the characters looked in certain scenes, with George Hamilton-level tans. Certain scenes look perfect, but at times the saturation is turned way, WAY up, to Speed Racer levels. (Tweed Racer?)

I don't recall the color saturation being that blinding...Anyone else that buys this, let me know what you think. Unless my TV settings are screwy, this Blu looks closer to Instagram at times than it does the movie I remember.

Do you set your TV's color settings manually?  Or do you set them on one of the established settings (cinema, sports, vibrant, etc)?  I tend to notice that most people just have their TVs set to vibrant because it made something look really nice once.  And then they don't ever change it again.

Take a look at the screenshots on this site:

http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/The-Royal-Tenenbaums-Blu-ray/39497/#Screenshots

and see how they compare to what you saw on your TV.

Last year, I calibrated my TV based on an old article from Lifehacker, and shut those settings off completely, although there were moments where I wanted to set the TV to a colder setting during Tenenbaums to desaturate it a bit. It wasn't the entire film; I thought the "Needle In The Hay" sequence had the same stark blue tone as the original (If slightly more saturated), but there are many scenes where the flesh tones are almost neon orange. Criterion usually has a color bar calibration with each film, so I'll try and calibrate based on that and see if there's a difference.

Well, this is interesting:

Heaven's Gate Criterion on November 20th.

And I'll second the stunning transfer of the Jaws bluray.  It's one of the most beautiful discs I have ever seen.

I just came here to post this. I find the movie itself interminable, but damned if it's not one of the most gorgeous films I've ever seen.

When I realized I love listening to commentary and watching all the stupid extras I was a blu ray bitch from day one.  I've even purchased blu ray copies of DVDs I already owned because I wanted the best picture and sound along with a few extra features.  I don't mind though because this is the one extra I allow myself, so bring on the blu ray!

It looks like most of my disposable income is going to Criterion this fall. November's releases also include Rashomon and Godard's Weekend:

http://arthousecowboy.com/journal/2012/8/15/criterion-collected-november-2012-release-slate.html

I love that Rashomon cover.

That RASHOMAN cover is amazing.

I would simply like to state the following:

OH MY CHRIST THE JAWS TRANSFER.

That is all.

It's as impressive as the Alien blu-ray, and that's saying something.

Holy shit.  Mine cannot come fast enough. Huuuurry amazon!  Alien is the best looking blu I have seen.

That said, I am starting to read that Jaws should be purchased at BB since it comes with a great book too.  Is this true?!  Is that a BB exclusive?  Is it really that fantastic?
