I do hope we start seeing Blu-Ray getting special cases like DVDs get. Looks like Bonnie & Clyde's Blu-Ray is coming in a book, which is atleast different from the usual blu case. Blade Runner doesn't really count because inside the Briefcase is just a blu case.

Interesting but not terribly surprising rumor about Microsoft's blu-ray plans. Personally, I'd love to not have to sink 400 bucks on a PS3 just to use it as a movie player.
Just watched some Planet Earth and jesus christ it was gorgeous. I don't even have a 1080p (only 720p and 1080i) set yet and it was fantastic. Also watched Ratattooie (sp?) last night and I was in awe the entire time. So happy with my PS3.
Yeah, half the time I think Planet Earth looks fake because everything is so crisp. I watched the Jungle episode last night and some of the time-lapse stuff was amazing.

Yeah I wish I could see everything in High Def... ...wait a sec.

Planet Earth and Ratatouille (I know how to spell it because I've typed it so many times) are excellent reference discs. Don't be afraid to touch the Pirates discs too (hmm saying that outloud, someone could hear it wrong).

Can't wait for Bourne, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and Godfather to come to blu. I held out on them (well I did get the first 2 Bourne films as gifts) just to get them in blu.

Heat is coming soon too! I can't fucking wait to be back in the states to watch it.

All of WBs plans, including Batman Begins and TDK on blu ray.
The Matrix trilogy, good and bad, will be mine. I was tempted to grab a cheap hd-dvd player to get those discs.

Now if Paramount would get off it's ass a re-release Transformers on Blu, then things will be looking good.

Considering Sony owns Columbia, I still baffled Lawrence was not one of their first priorities to release.

Believe it or not, a new Lawrence might be closer than you think, as the great Robert A. Harris recently was involved in a new restoration of the film not too long ago , and even unveiled it at Grauman's. Sit tight.

I wasted a very large portion of my student loan check on Blu-ray Discs this week. Over the last six days, I've bought:

Casino Royale
The Devil's Rejects
Halloween
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End
The Rock
Saw
Saw II
Saw III
Saw IV
Sky High
The Terminator
Terminator 2: Judgment Day
Vacancy

Holy shit, guys. I'm broke.
Fuck education! Who needs that shit anyway?

Nice stash there.
You could just steal from those idiots who use their student loan money for stuff they need for school. Fucking chumps!

QFT.

Seriously? All four of them?

And VACANCY?
Hahaha. Awesome.
On www.blu-ray.com they have a review for NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN that had me practically salivating. It pretty much said that this may be the best looking picture released in the medium bar none.

It also looks like THERE WILL BE BLOOD may get day and date Blu release with the DVD.

I will own both.
I cannot wait for No Country. Even more so after reading that review. Fuck it's nice to finally be on the blu-ray wagon.

It better, or one night, I'm gonna come inside Paramount's house, wherever it's sleeping, and I'm gonna cut it's throat.

That's a GREAT idea.

(in all actuality, this check basically gives me back everything I didn't spend on school stuff. So everything's paid for, this is just gravy money)

If I can just find a kid walking around with his loan check...

I'm a completist. I assure you, I'm very aware of the shame Saw gives my name on CHUD.

VACANCY is legitimately good for the first 35 minutes or so. Then it's boring by-the-numbers garbage.

I liked it quite a bit until the horrifically out of place happy ending.

I read that review too. Already pre-ordered No Country and if you're correct about There Will Be Blood getting a release date on BD, my PS3 will be getting a good workout. Thank god the format war is over.
So whats with this Bluray Version 2 shit I've been hearing about? Apparently the PS3 has the ability to upgrade to it but all the current Bluray players don't? Inform!

Blu-ray Spec 2.0 is the internet stuff.

1.0 Regular film watching + BDJ
1.1 Picture in Picture capable
2.0 Internet content download capable

Thanks for that, Nachos. I was really torn about waiting for a standalone 2.0 player to come out since I don't see myself using the PS3 for games much with a perfectly good 360 Elite lying around. Then again, I can only imagine those 2.0 players will be sitting at $400 for some time after they finally come out (next February?), so why not just spring for the PS3 now.
Blu-ray players with at least 1GB of storage and an internet connection (which is pretty much the PS3 only right now) will have access to "web-enabled features". It's entirely optional, and nobody really knows how much studios are going to utilize it when only a portion of the audience can make use of these features. They could feasibly download new extras or trailers. And by "features" and "extras", they probably mean "advertising". Chances are, it's entirely non-essential.
True, but as soon as I buy a 1.1 player I just know the studios are going to do something cool as hell with internet capability to make me regret that purchase.
I just got No Country BR for review and will back up claims of radness. The extras are pretty weak, but we've come to expect that from the Coens.

FYI

Quote:
Sony has announced officially that its first profile 2.0 ready Blu-ray players will be released later this year. Each will include profile 1.1 "Bonus Play" support, an Ethernet connection and a USB port for external storage. The BDP-S350 ($400) will be available this summer and will be firmware updatable to profile 2.0/BD-Live later in the year. The BDP-S550 ($500) will follow in the fall, and will ship with profile 2.0/BD-Live support installed. FYI, sources at Panasonic have also told us that their first profile 2.0 player, the BD-50, is due to arrive in stores in May or June.

Paramount has just confirmed that Into the Wild and Things We Lost in the Fire (both due next week on 3/4) will be the last HD-DVD format releases from either studio. DreamWorks Animation's Bee Movie (originally due 3/11) has been cancelled on HD-DVD, along with the HD-DVD versions of Sweeney Todd (originally set for 4/1), There Will Be Blood (originally 4/8), The Kite Runner and The Jack Ryan Collection (both previously announced for 4/25). All new release titles are now officially due on DVD only for the time being, hough industry sources are telling us that Blu-ray versions are soon to be announced.

Seriously though, I was going to start a thread asking what SONY did correct this time around that they didn't do with BetaMax. Any suggestions?

And is BluRay a superior format or was there no difference in superiority versus good old fashioned capitalism in this go-round?

Isn't PS3 supposed to be profitable within the next 4 or 5 months? As opposed to 360 which probably never will be. I am no hardcore gamer so don't bust me on that, but I'm sure I've read both of those from legitimate sources.

From my seat, Blu-Ray has always looked better if the set-up was right. At the end of the day really, Blue can simply hold more.

Oh, that's crap. I have both formats and the upper tier titles look exactly the same. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix -- optimized for a 30GB disc -- looks and sounds just as good as the 50GB Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest.

Certainly didn't mean to offend.

I don't own one. My impression comes from the set ups at various stores and Blu-ray (especially) Sony set-ups have consistently looked better and sharper - fucking pristine. They've always looked like what I thought HiDef was supposed too as opposed to the grainy bullshit on most HD displays. Perhaps these stores just need to be taught how to set up their HD DVD displays (moot now) but they never looked as good. I used to support HD from my little armchair but I eventually hoped more and more for Blu to win as, like I said, they always looked nicer in stores and in the few home set-ups I've been able to experience.

I am more than willing to admit that it could have been the seemingly constant looping of Happy Feet on Blu set-ups that gave the impression. I would assume upper-end computer animation is more inclined to look perfect in HiDef.

It's a matter of opinion. I happen to agree with Renn, while I think your assessment of shitting on Dead Man's Chest is dead wrong.

If you were going to pick a Blu-Ray to shit on in terms of visuals, you would've had a stronger argument going after "Ocean's Thirteen".

Sadly blu-rays have been held back, but I've yet to see a movie that is optimized for each one for a good comparison. Just because one has more space doesn't mean a better picture is for certain.

What? I wasn't shitting on Dead Man's Chest. I said "upper tier" titles. Order of the Phoenix and Dead Man's Chest both look and sound incredible.
I just watched Blade Runner Final Cut last night. 80 gb PS3 into my 1080p 55" KDS-55A3000.

Incredible image. Every bit as beautiful and detailed as you've been reading about.

Now I just need a receiver with HDMI inputs to process the newer audio standards.

He shits on a Dead Man's Chest all the time while watching Ocean's Thirteen.

Seriously, Renn. It's a beautiful format with the standard amount of misses for a product finding its feet.

If you're looking for something wonderful to watch, there's the following for sheer visual thrill:

Lost - The Complete Third Season
No Country for Old Men (out 3/11)
Blade Runner - The Final Cut
The Host
Ghost Rider
Casino Royale
Black Book
The Rock
Across the Universe
Pan's Labyrinth

Planet Earth needs to be on that list. As does Ratatouille.

Planet Earth and Ratatouille have playback problems in certain profile players. I'm going for discs that a neophyte could put into the player with no problems.
I would add Casablanca and 2001 as well, and speaking of Kubrick the fact WHV skipped Barry Lydon pisses me off although I fully understand why.
I couldn't get any of the At World's End features to work when I rented it, but Ratatouille works fine, Anderson, it just takes 3 minutes to fucking load.

Which player do you have?

In my experience, PlayStation 3 is the only player able to access everything at a reasonable pace.

Ratatouille loads great in my player, so does Planet Earth. I'm going by the general viewer's experience. The random person who picks it up and sticks it in their player.

Hell, try explaining the need for updated firmware to your average person. The BDA needs to start a campaign to dumb it down enough, otherwise it's going to become a sticking point.
You are absolutely correct. DontEatNachos put it better then the Sony people did. When I originally bought my player the paperwork implied that I could download a firmware upgrade, but now I find out I'll have to buy a new player.
